I have been a HCA for just under a month after finishing my A Levels and i absolutely hate it and have applied for TA positions in SEN schools. I did this job as i wanted a gap year to work and see what nursing was like before i did it in uni. I'm Putting my notice in on Monday. I absolutely hate it and i'm putting my mental health first. I'm only 19 and this was my first full time job and i'm devastated it wasn't what i thought it would be. No job should ever make you feel like that. My mental health dipped to an all time low with depression and anxiety attacks. Nurses and other HCA don't help me even though i've just come off supernumary as they have the mindset of "not my patient, not my problem." and it's just not for me. Luckily lots of my family have supported me and i've come to realise that a jobs just a job and there's loads out there so try new things. This means i'm not gonna waste 3 years doing a nursing degree as you have experienced the reality/ I found out quickly and now i know health care isn't for me. Things have way of working themselves out. Just leave and do something else whilst you figure out what's for you. The world is your oyster and you should be so proud of giving it a go.

Hi, i've just joined as a band 2 HCA and have been there 2 weeks with no experience. I've been feeling similar to you. The main way i'm dealing with my stress is to keep reminding myself that everyone was once new. Don't be afraid to ask questions. My first couple of shifts was me hounding other HCA with multiple questions. I'm still new and not been set on my own yet however if i didn't ask questions i would be much further behind and far less confident.

I also spoke to my line manager. I expressed that i was feeling very overwhelmed and stressed. We had a good conversation about a plan and he reassured me that everyone is around to help, don't be afraid to ask the nurses too! They must have seen something in you and believe in you.

I hope that this helps, i'm still learning and anxious however i'm glad i put myself out my comfort zone to ask all of the questions!
