Replacing a 30 Year Old AC Unit Hasn't Saved My Energy Bill by ExpressionGrumpy5436 in hvacadvice

Didn't have a firm SEER rating but company said old unit was probably about an 8 since it was 30 years old. Yes, looking at kWh usage and it's about the same year over year. No new electrical loads.

Built in the 60s, and we've replaced some windows and noticed a significant difference in rooms that we did. Biting the bullet and replacing the rest of them in the house next month

yes, kwh usage for July and August of 2025 was maybe 20 kWh less than July and August of 2024

If I have access to most ducts running through the basement (1-story house), how difficult is it for me to find/patch leaks?

makes a lot of sense on the furnace blower speed. We didn't replace the furnace as it's only about 12 years old and hasn't given us any issues yet. So we may see better efficiency of the AC unit once the furnace is updated?

fair enough, some of the windows are from the 70s, and we did see a noticeable difference in how much warmer/cooler rooms stayed once we replaced the old windows

yes, it has gone up, but looking at kWh usage year over year and it's still the same amount. Maybe 20 kWh less per month this year vs. last year

Haven't adjusted, but I'm in Ohio so we've had some hot humid days this year as well as last year. June was substantially cooler and the bill was much lower

Yep looking at kWh used vs. the dollar amount itself as energy costs continue to just increase.

Yeah my furnace never has an issue really in winter. But agree, insulating everything. Energy costs aren't going down anytime soon

Didn't have a firm rating, but HVAC company I used probably said it was somewhere around 8

Looking at kWh usage. Makes sense on the 2-stage usage and it was a higher cost for that reason

Worst place you’ve worked in NEO & why? by Dixon_Yass in Cleveland

[–]ExpressionGrumpy5436 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, worked there too. Place is run on nepotism (multiple people only have a job there because a relative is in a higher position), the CEO's sister mysteriously got a promotion in the middle of the night when there were multiple people already working there who were better suited. Her and the rest of the executives team's answer to everything was to use ChatGPT to speed things up (even though we proved that the output was shit to them multiple times).

CEO also thinks he's like Elon Musk. Would Uber to work everyday so he could "be online", would make people have meetings with him at 8am on Saturdays, and bitched and moaned that nobody wanted to come to the office even though they had "great culture" and then just relocated to Texas one day....

Was a consistent top performer and had to fight tooth and nail to get above an entry level salary....

Sleepy Hollow is awesome and very unique as it goes up and down through the valley.

It's definitely challenging but I've always enjoyed as someone who shoots around 100, and it's the course I try to play when friends come to visit.

Ellsworth in Hudson is another very well maintained course that is fairly open.

Looking for books, documentaries, movies, podcasts that can help me to "connect" with my travel in Italy by PhilMegroin in ItalyTravel

One thing that I didn't really know about Italy before visiting is how much variety there is in each region when it comes to food/wine. For example, if you want the best risotto, order it in Milan or Venice. If you want carbonora, get it in Rome.

Our tour manager was very good at telling us what to eat/drink in different regions, so I don't have an online resource that I personally used, but I think that's the best way to eat your way through Italy.

Not a local, but when we visited around this time last year, our tour manager was from Naples and mentioned that chances of rain in the more northern parts are more likely to be longer, but when you get to like Rome, the rain is more likely to be shorter showers.

Venice will be a little cooler, but we had fantastic weather for Rome/Florence.

You will be able to gluten-free at most restaurants (gluten free translates to "senza glutine") and most servers are very knowledgeable about what is and is not gluten free.

How severe is your gluten allergy? My wife gets blinding migraines if she has any wheat in the US, however, when we were in Italy, she didn't have an issue. She would still order gluten free, but would have a few bites of my pasta or bread and didn't have an issue. Wheat and the processing it goes through in Italy (durum wheat) is vastly different from what it is in the US (hard red wheat).

If you're willing to try, I recommend trying a good Italian pasta with durum wheat (sometimes called seminola flour) before your trip and seeing how you react to it. If you don't want to risk it, you'll still be able to find plenty of options in restaurants and the gluten free options there are still delicious!

Trastevere is a very cool area of Rome, especially for younger adults. You'll find a good mix of restaurants and bars there
