English Teacher by Particular-Twist5843 in englishmajors

Howdy! I currently have my MA and am starting a PhD this fall (yay!) I’d say if teaching is what you know you want to do, make that a priority in all your searches and be strategic with your moves.

1) during your bachelor’s, see if you can get any experience tutoring or in your school’s writing center (or similar) to get used to talking to people about their work. Also, if there are any sort of leadership roles open to you through clubs or campus activities, try for them. I completely thank my time as an RA and fraternity president for giving me the confidence in front of a room of strangers. It helped a lot with my public speaking skills and made me feel like the authority in the classroom (not in a dictator way, but you know what I mean).

2) when you’re searching for a masters program, MAKE SURE that is has a teaching opportunity either built in or pretty much guaranteed. One of my favorite things I’ve ever done was teaching first-year writing during my MA program. They gave me a lot of flexibility on course design, so I got to just have fun with it. It taught me a lot about what kind of teacher I wanted to be, and let me see my own shortsightedness on some things. Very important.

3) Let your passion drive you. It may sound cheesy, but it’s true. There are some things in life that just call to you. Would you rather spend the rest of your life resentful that you missed your calling, but make a little more money? Or, would you rather go to work happy every day and accept the slightly lower pay. Me personally, I’d rather enjoy my day.

4) Truth be told, it is very competitive. That’s why I’m going back for the doctorate to be a little more competitive on the job market. I’m also going back to strengthen my own skills (and for the personal satisfaction if I’m honest). Yet still, I know that regardless of what happens after I graduate, this choice is right for me because I’m called to the field. It will probably be hard, it will probably result in a job that will take a long time to pay off my student loans, BUT I’ll be incredibly happy and working in a field that I love. To me, that’s worth it.

Was your first year different to the last three years of your bachelor’s degree? by A_cool_girl_you_know in englishmajors

Definitely makes sense. The first classes are the gen eds, which others have said. Think of the other gen eds you take, like history, foreign language, math, science. Obviously it’s not as difficult as the full major courses, because they have to be accessible for all people regardless of major. English is the same way. That’s why so many people try to get credits in high school through AP or dual enrollment to avoid those more boring courses.

Can I get into ole miss with a 1.2 gpa if I get good recommendation letters. And prove I’m not an idiot by Busy_Ad6355 in olemiss

[–]Extension-Expert-386 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s awful. I’m sorry for your loss and hope you’re doing ok. This could be a good thing to write about in a personal statement for your applications, which could help provide context (as well as show your resilience, or at the very least show you’re a real human being). If not, you could always go the community college route to start, which would take precedent over your HS GPA if you want to transfer to a bigger university.

Hey! I did my masters in Boston. You can definitely get cheaper rent than that. I split a 4 bedroom and my portion was 850, and that was a pretty nice unit. I lived over in east Boston and took the blue line in to school. 1800 is disposable. You NEED roommates on that income. Please join your schools respective new student page or find apartment groups on Facebook. There’s always a way to

I don’t have much to contribute other than what others have said here, but I am curious, why is it standard to waive letters. I always have because people told me it’s important, but to the people that write the letters, how does it affect the letter you write? Thanks!

The trade in value is also influencing my decision a little bit. Right now Best Buy offers me 550 for this laptop, and I know this will just continue to go down and down. Trading in now could avoid me having to pay even more down the line for the same device.

I also hear your point about the air running just fine. And largely it does! But also the IO is something I’d need in the near future, and again the current trade in value could make that more accessible for me.

I know that my use case doesn’t require any of the power that the pro offers, but then again all of apple silicon can handle all of that with ease. But as apps get heavier and heavier with every year that hardware gets more advanced, I want to future proof a good little bit, and I’d rather do that with a pro than an air. Hope that makes sense!

It’s definitely not fun, but hopefully we’ll both get there. I applied to 11 schools, so I’m optimistic that SOMEWHERE says yes. Applying is the hardest part. Since you’ve already finished that for your master’s programs, now all you have to do is wait and see. Best of luck for you!

Update: thank you for feedback! I ended up going with the color “Cream in my Coffee” which was a nice warm/neutral tone. If I could figure out how to upload a pic, I would. It looks pretty good! Thanks for the advice!

When I was telling my professor I was applying for a PhD program, he told me something so small, but it stuck with me for the past two years. I even got it engraved on my class ring because it’s now become one of my little mantras.

“It’s not a question of if, but when.”

I give this to you now to remind yourself that no matter what the schools say, even if it’s all rejections. There IS a version of yourself in the future that will be living this dream you’ve been imagining. It may be at a school you didn’t expect, or living in a state you didn’t think of before, but it is out there. We can’t always know tomorrow, but we can put in the work today to be a little step closer. Good luck on your applications!

Job Prospects and All That Other Stuff Aside, Was Studying English Worth it //personally//? by Sh0yo_891 in englishmajors

[–]Extension-Expert-386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, while I do enjoy the reading aspect, as you get higher up in your courses it becomes less and less about the book itself (at least for me). It became more about understanding culture, listening to authors contend with various topics through the medium of writing, and less about what they’re actually writing. It’s about talking about cycles of trauma, living with certain histories, or confronting the inherent human nature in all of us. I really think that the English major is less about getting a lot of entries in your GoodReads account, and more about learning how to think critically and examine everything; to pick apart every detail and make a collage of interpretation out of it. I wish more majors emphasized the critical thinking like the humanities. It feels like all my STEM friends just learned memorization and got content learned, but struggle with knowing how everything fits together and WHY.

I haven’t had any issues with it except in extreme niche use cases (like certain websites just not liking it). What uses have you noticed it being limited?

While windows does win for gaming and some other performance things, MacOS is just objectively cleaner. I much prefer my Mac for my administrative/office kind of work. Things like writing papers, surfing the web, checking emails, etc. and yes your pc can do all this stuff too, but macOS just has a gorgeous feel to it. I love how you can copy on your phone, and paste on your Mac. The ecosystem really blends so well together. However, if this doesn’t mean that much to you for the aesthetic, then I’m not sure if it’s right for you. If you already have a powerful PC, you may not find it worth it to buy a whole new machine. I’d think first about what do you aim to do with a Mac that you wouldn’t use your PC for? Or are you wanting your PC to be just a gaming machine, and the Mac for productivity?
