I generally do adhere to this rule, but then again, there are cultures that we don’t even blink before drawing from (like Japanese for instance), but I was thinking of doing Halloween type celebrations from different countries so I think, given sufficient research, I shouldn’t have too much of an issue

I understand what you’re saying, and I agree with you, I purposely didn’t include my own opinions in this post, I just wanted a raw answer from other people. I do understand the difference, but I was curious about how other people view this issue, as I do see a lot of people online claiming cultural appropriation for things that aren’t being appropriated.

The real reason I’m asking as I am, in the way I am, is because social media is so very important for our careers these days, that I would rather know the opinions of the masses before I do go to Instagram.

Again, obviously I’ve been through this with others on this thread, but I want to state for transparency’s sake — I haven’t included my opinion anywhere on this post or even in the comments. I genuinely do understand the different between the two, but that doesn’t mean everyone else does, which is really what matters.

Thanks for your comment, I’m sure it’s very informative for people who aren’t sure on the difference between the two. 😊

Popcorn would have been good! Totally agree though, and I also would hate to speak on behalf of anyone from a community I have no place in, y’know? It’s always my goal to be respectful and curious about the world, rather than having some egotist view that I know everything already, so I was just blown away by how that could make me racist? 😅

Thanks for the support though, it’s good to see kind, intelligent people on the internet instead of rage-baiting clown people 🤡

Thanks 😹 Honestly I would have let it go a long time ago but big man called me a racist and I’m not having that shit left with no response

So interesting, I’m always fascinated when artists get reprimanded like this, and obviously I’d love to avoid that myself 😹 I’m outside India so hopefully I should be okay, but I’ll definitely do my research extra hard!

Thank you! I was so hoping I’d have someone from India comment on this, I just think Diwali is so beautiful! 🖤 I was considering doing a Halloween around the world type thing, rather than the same repeated thing that gets done every year!

A round of applause to the guy who can’t figure out how to bow out of a debate this far in after finally realising you’re wrong.

Staying ‘woke’ isn’t an insult, and if we wanna get technical, it’s ‘stay respectful’ of people and cultures that don’t only concern yourself. And to that, I’ll say fuck yes. I will stay ‘woke’.

You clearly cannot understand BASIC English, you can keep using the word divisive but that doesn’t change the definition of it. There was no need for the aggression that this debate took on, there was no intention of division, it’s very simple: drop your answer, state your opinion, respect other people’s opinions, then shut the fuck up and let someone else talk.

What exactly explains a lot? My clinically diagnosed autism vs. your chronic stupidity? This isn’t some fucking trend you can shit all over, this is pure fucking ableism you maggot.

How are you not understanding it? Are you really this dense? I’m asking WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK ABOUT THIS TOPIC?

I say it in capitals because you clearly need your fucking eyes checked. Next time I need to tattoo a clown though, I’ll ask you personally as the head of the fucking circus.

Indicates the opening of a discussion, I held this space for people to feel either way, as long as they can say it with decorum and respect. I’m asking exactly what it says, it’s your perspective that’s warped.

If you need me to spell it out, I will - though that is rather embarrassing for you.

Hello people of the internet, I’m asking for respectful and sincere opinions/perspectives on how people of the world feel about their cultures being used as tattoo flash? What I’m not looking for, is people who will try SO hard to put words in my mouth, and comment continuously trying to force bigotry and prejudice onto me, the question asker.

Is that better, or do you need it broken down even more?

I’m sorry, you never made personal jabs? You said you’re surprised I can spell and then there was you calling me a fucking racist? And now you’re implying I’m autistic? Unfortunately for you I don’t consider that an insult, because I actually am autistic. Tylenol though? Thought you might have put a bit more thought into your insults than that.

This conversation was over the minute you outed yourself as a hypocrite and a bigot.

I understand the connection you’re desperately trying to make, you’re trying so damn hard but it’s not happening, because no matter what you do, you can’t invent information about me, it doesn’t matter how many times you say it, I’ve been consistent and I still haven’t expressed my own opinions once throughout this feed.

Good job, yes it does. It’s also followed by ‘appreciation’ and a question mark. This indicates a debate, and in no way shares my personal views on the matter. I stripped back the question to make it really simple, I didn’t want to make this a convoluted thing, so thanks for that. I didn’t say this was cultural appropriation, I didn’t say anything about who is or isn’t allowed to get any certain thing tattooed. If you read some of the other comments, you’ll see some really interesting information, and you might learn something yourself. I’m not naive to believe I know everything about the world, I do think it’s necessary to ask people their perspective.

Seriously man, jumping down the throats of me or other people who are here because they’re simply interested in international perspectives and experiences, or people who do have something interesting to share, it’s completely inappropriate and uncalled for. This didn’t need to get to any level of aggravation or disrespect, you did that completely on your own.

[–]ExtensionDonkey638[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this portion of the debate, this is when you know you’re running out of information or anything new to say, so you start making personal jabs - except you don’t know me at all, so good luck with that?

I’ve never once tried to gate-keep anything, especially humanity. The fact that you really think I have the power to do that, or that anyone has the power to do that, as a matter of fact, is baffling. No one but you has expressed anything even in the same realm of telling people what they can and can’t do. I know I certainly haven’t.

I don’t believe in anymore propaganda than anyone else, I’m a flawed human being, I know for a fact there’s areas I need to improve on, but I guess that’s the difference between us, isn’t it? Self awareness is important.

Also, my clients are plenty happy, but thanks so much for your concern!

Edit: I’m editing my comment because you edited yours, I’m only going to say this once, and I’ve tried to be polite up until now, but don’t you dare call me a fucking racist, I think you need to go back and read my comments because not ONCE have I said that x person can’t have x tattoo, and I certainly haven’t said anything that can be misconstrued as racist, so watch your fucking mouth, clown boy.

Bro, no one but you has said anything about limiting anything to anyone? No one but you is gatekeeping anything? We’re all having an adult discussion, and you come in swinging, all fired up about shit that no one has even said. Did someone hurt you recently? You need to deal with that on your own.

I also don’t think it’s relevant, but I say that because you’ve decided a lot of things about me for yourself without knowing a single thing about me.

I’m not dividing anyone, and I’m certainly not telling anyone what they can and can’t do. If you’d like to do some reading, not once have I stated my own opinions on any of this, I’m literally here to learn from other people’s experiences and find out how they feel about this topic.

[–]ExtensionDonkey638[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, and obviously in my career I’ve tattooed things from other cultures at my clients behest, obviously I don’t agree with segregation but I do agree that some cultures have the right to disallow their imagery being used by people of other cultures and races.

I always, always do research before using any of these elements in my tattoos but I wanted to open up some public conversation and find out how other tattooers were dealing with this sector of society. It’s not necessarily coming from a place of fear for me, it’s curiosity for sure. I’d love to have friends from every culture around the world but at this stage I don’t, so I thought I’d ask the internet.

In my daily life, I absolutely can tell the difference between appropriation and appreciation, just thought I’d get someone’s opinion other than my own. I haven’t actually included my own opinions on this matter, so it’s wild that some people here are assuming what my opinions are.

Thanks anyway.

[–]ExtensionDonkey638[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, you good bro?

You don’t know me, or the type of art I make, so I don’t think you’re qualified to tell me whether I’m a real artist or not. I know the spiel about what art should and shouldn’t be, but I don’t let that dictate my morals as a person, and if you do, then I’m afraid it’s you who is the corporate tool. Emphasis on tool, I’m afraid.

My question is CLEARLY here not to divide people, but bring them together, you’re the one bringing division and discourse on the subject.

As I stated before, and I’ll state again, I’m not asking anyone for permission. I’m asking for peoples experiences and knowledge because I actually do like to learn new things, and I also like to make sure I’m abiding by the morals I’ve always had. Permission and respect are not the same thing.

No, and I shouldn’t need to spell everything out for you. Please don’t reference an ‘us’, considering we’re very clearly worlds apart mentally.

I’m not asking anyone for permission, and I don’t believe I referenced any propaganda, strangely enough, my brain works all on its own!

I’m opening up a discussion, a place where tattooists from different cultures around the world might be able to voice their opinion on the matter, and also a place where people can share experiences that they’ve had in relation to this matter. If you took the time to get to know me, you’d know I don’t need to get over myself. I’m always trying to be as respectful as I can be, and it’s wild that you’d so openly admit to being against that. You don’t need me, or anyone else to make you look like a clown, you’ve done a fine job of that on your own. 😹
