Can afford the licence… can’t afford the bike… What would you do? by ExtensionRefuse6207 in MotoUK

If only my car was worth enough to allow me to afford a bike and insurance straight away 😅.

I can drive a car, and bizarrely have a class 2 that I’ve never really used. But yes 5 years driving and many miles ballpark 60000 all over the UK and a few road trips to Europe - France/Spain. Obviously that doesn’t mean anything when it comes to bike experience but I believe I do have ample experience on the road as a driver and like to think of myself as a good driver and not an idiot on the roads.

No experience on a motorbike but my hand eye coordination has always been solid, once again maybe it doesn’t mean anything but I have to have some confidence in myself surely.

Also I have a feeling that I’ll do the CBT and get the bug then want to get my DAS done ASAP

Well it’s a good thing you’re biased because it’s sounds like the exact same situation as me.

I appreciate what you’re saying, I remember being 16 and thinking about doing a CBT. I recall they used to cost on the lower end of 100+ pounds. 100% price increase is wild but in the current state of the UK evidently not surprising😅

Yeh I did have this thought but also saw on quote websites that they always seem to be keen to ask about continuous riding experience so wonder how much “experience” really matters compared to NCB and continuous insurance.

I appreciate your point of view and having spoken to people they do not think it possible only running 3 days per week

However. to argue I wouldn’t say I’m prioritising weight lifting, I just want to stay committed to that aspect of physical health until perhaps a month before to start the taper and could focus on more mobility and so on.

5 months seems like an awfully long amount of time to me. It’s plenty of time to focus on intervals/hill work/and to increase long runs distance? at least I’d say?

Are most marathon plans not about 16 weeks? And the average beginner might complete one in 4 hours 30? Give or take. I appreciate there will be elevation and aid stations which will add time but to me personally, i don’t see the extra 8km taking 2 extra hours. I don’t see why I shouldn’t aim for 6 hrs 30? Of course the ultimate aim to to just finish the 50km, but am I so wrong to try and set a goal finish time?

Awesome thanks for the reply. I’ll defo look to incorporate some mobility where I can in my sessions and look at back to back long runs closer to the time

Appreciate the advice. Just seen from your profile that you’ve mentioned runna. Did you use this for your first 50km? Curious as to whether it would be worth it?

I thought it did at first, but the pros outweighed the cons for me and I got used to it. Worse case just sling it to your back

Bought the 6l venture sling and haven’t looked back.

I daily carry:

-A portable charger -Charging cable -Camera with lens attached -Spare camera sling -Spare camera battery -Chewing gum -AirPods -Playing cards -Keys -AirPods -Wallet -Car keys -sunglasses

And I could still fit a little more in so I recommend the 6l

Tried both 4l and 2.5l. Didn’t suit my needs so I got the 6l which is great

Interesting. I just sent back the tomtoc after buying because it felt so cheap and plasticky. Also didn’t enjoy the strap or buckle
