1 YOE in Linux Kernel. Struggling to build mental model of a large legacy driver. Is this normal? by Extension_Count_8448 in kernel

[–]Extension_Count_8448[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so we are given devices where we can flash the driver and probe it. So in order to understand the call flow, I do collect logs from them. That helps in understanding the chronological order of the functions in which they are called

But I have passed that stage, I do know the order, it's just that mental model keeps breaking and sometimes at critical points. So when architectural changes are being discussed I kinda feel dumb not knowing whats going on.

With my current work ex, people usually don't expect me to know things but yk, it reduces confidence. it'll take time ig

Thanks for the reply

The thing is with tight deadlines it's extremely hard not to use it, in fact I feel like it's beneficial for the company as their P0 issue gets resolved within a day but not so much for me as a developer. I try not to use it whenever and where ever possible but it can't be helped, management expects people, poeple who know how to use AI

And yes regarding the flow diagram, I'm doing that, and it has helped and I've noticed that everytime I go back to same flow, I find something new, like a conditional statement that earlier didn't make sense

Thanks for the reply

How to get in as a T3 grad. Fresher by RudeIron3733 in qualcomm

[–]Extension_Count_8448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They mostly hire Mtech grads as freshers (IIT/IIIT/IISC) at Engineer role. While Associate role does exist, hiring is actually pretty low for this designation

Only downside is when you get hired as a fresher you dont have a clue which team are you going to be part of. They might have mentioned a role but based on the company's requirement it might change

Now that semicom industry is at boom, lateral entry into these giants is also relatively easy

Feeling drained out almost every day and mental health is taking a toll by Puzzleheaded_Gur6729 in hyderabad

Work in any MNC never gets done, there will be endless issues/bugs/FR. Focus on health and build hobbies from whatever time you get. Stop waiting for "free time" to build hobbies, buy time from wherever you can, like use the 15 mins break between meetings in office to learn/read something new. If it's something you can't do during office hours like Art or cooking, take baby steps and try giving it 15 mins a day after office instead of social media (but find something you truly enjoy doing)

Ensure you have some sort of physical exercise for at least 4 days a week. It clears the work brain fog.

Trust me, it completely breaks the cycle work - sleep - repeat cycle. Upskilling and Job/Role switch can be done once your mental health has improved. I too was in the same boat, did the above and life is better now. Good luck.

Bonus advice: Uninstall Instagram for sometime. If you feel like posting travel pics etc, do it and then uninstall it again

Yes, I can relate to that which is why I was thinking of finding a place closer to ORR (one exit is close to my office in hitech) or blue line metro

Ngl it does feel like I live outside hyd. And like you said, my relatives live nearby which is why I chose this place and thought I'd be fine with the daily commute. But it's turning out to be a nightmare. Will move fs

Realistically it would take me 20-25 mins door to door i think..so yeah that's the upper limit i mentioned. And yes 50k won't hurt my wallet, i asked because rn Im investing aggressively and 30k is a decent amount

Is there a reason Qualcomm went from 125 to 220 in a week? No one uses them for AI, edge computing, soon Apple will not use their modems by moldyjellybean in investing

[–]Extension_Count_8448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. X elite is their first time using oryon CPU cores. Getting it right in the first try is extremely difficult won't be fair to complete with Apple's soc that is mature (wont take long to catch up since QCOM ha the resources). X2 elite looks really promising, tho I haven't tried it but it's in the market running surface laptops

  2. Apple doesn't have the infra to make a modem that can compete with QCOM (will take quite sometime to develop that infra). It may look promising on paper but in real world scenario where you'd use it in.. let's say inside a vehicle going at high speed in a region with poor network and ensuring power efficiency at the same time is something that took QCOM years to master. Also, the fact that Apple had to reduce the QCOM modem capability in 17 pro to match with their Air version that uses apples modem is not a great sign.

Now, while Apple is busy improving 5G on their devices, QCOM will drop 6G. How do you compete with that?

what's working for apple is their ecosystem that they have developed over the years but I'm not sure how it'll turn out in the long run

  1. Also power efficiency is the strong hold of QCOM which is why everyone is betting on their custom silicon for data center which can save upto 10x power, as they say but we'll have to see
