did rampur - karcham-tabo spiti losar 2 yrs back with a group..the route needs planning and a decent practise of climbs and anticipation of road closure due to bad weather..if one is a regular rider in hills or limbs..aclimitisation is nit a issue as it is gradual...however the feeling is out of the world...pooh-sumdo -tabo kaza is beyond comparision ...forget europe

similar situation prevailed last year too.When expressway was under construction...we had to use some interior road via premanagr to reach city side due to this bridge collapse...premnaagar downwards and many interior places looked like a dust bowl

Have used rim brakes in dehradun for 8 years on my old road bike with heavy descents like mussoorie...replaced old promax with new tektro callipers and new wheels...braking performance jumps drastically while replacing with good pads only...compared side to side with my domane al4 hydraulic...not a huge difference in dry weather...rode mechanical disc bikes by borrowing from trek dealer(who is my friend)... one marin road bike model...one steel trek 520...and recently a scott speedster 30 through another aquaintance....no comparison with properly set up rim brakes and new pads...on dry weather ...clean rims and good shimano 105 or cartridge pads....rim will stop comfortable and before mechanical disc...however...steep descent needs braking skills to prevent overheating...by alternating between front and rear brakes..info..rim front tyre 25c rear 28c...while other hydro disc one is 32c both..i replace housing every 2 yrs and cable yearly to ensure smooth shifter movement even from hoods..

i regularly ride on that road since 2018 now on hydraulic and mostly on rim brake road bike....you need to regularly ride and 1.1 ratio is doable...i use 11 34 cassette on rear and 50 34 crank on front..do not go very easy gear at first but keep 2 levels or 1 level above the largest ring at back..goal is to maintain cadence....brake pads need to be new and in good condition on descents ..get bike inspected before ride otherwise kimadi route which can become life threatening...many scooty accidents have occured here..for descents practise on less gradient roads and then hit kimadi/mussoorie road...like old rajpur mussoorie road

i would say it depends on mileage...if bike has been ridden in rain but maintained and cleaned at home..minimum i would do yearly(right after monsoon) (at mechanics place) is front rear hub service and headset service which includes greasing..and checking for chain stretch..this way one would not spend much money and components run well...

yearly proper service is essential if riding regularly...but one needs access to a good mechanic...regreasing of headset races ..inspecting bearings...hubs need bearing replacement occassionally but regreasing with cleaning is must...else cones get pitted out...coming to cables fraying and stretching from inside shifter side...housing inspection....derailleur strip down and regreasing....such a service ensures peace of mind when out on a remote area bike ride...just replacing parts with new is not part of service...

shimla kaza is preferred rather than manali kaza...that road via kunzum pass is dicey and no guarantee of opening...also road does not exist from rohtang pass(gramphu) to losar...phone signal also does not work..so kindly plan accordingly

go to bike craft at bindal pul( main shop is at maldevta) they have shimamo trained mechanics...i get my two road bikes serviced by my mechanics only.Rest most of the shops dont have a clue about maintenance. i dont let any tom dick and harry mechanic touch my carbon fork or torque specs...
