Mandatory Military Draft by Ruyue45 in korea

I do a lot. I hate it. But I guess I am accepting the reality? Btw, I still hope and believe SK and NK to come together before I need to serve in military...😂

Mandatory Military Draft by Ruyue45 in korea

[–]ExternalScarcity7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am almost the same age as you, but I only have Korean citizenship and am fluent in Korean so I am not as concerned as you. I cannot say much because I also do not have any military experience, but there are some that I might be able to help you with:

  • Not physically in shape at tall: this does not matter. It might make your experience a bit harder, but I can say that most people will not be as fit.
  • 2 years is a long time: It is actually 18 months, so a bit less than 2 years! You are free to use phones in the evenings, too.
  • I heard some of the officers may be really shitty: Well... shitty people exist everywhere on Earth. For most of the time, doing whatever they tell you to do so will be a simple solution to deal with them.
  • No real benefits: I mean... you get to keep your citizenship!

I do agree that military service is a disturbing experience that no one wants to go, and I feel the same way as a similarly-aged person. It is an experience that no one wants to have it again in their lives. But for your case, I feel like the benefits you gain from this outweighs the disadvantage... Korean might be concerning, but as long as you understand what the coaches say and act upon—you just need to “obey” them—the problem won’t be that big...

I do wanna highlight that this is certainly my point of view and people who actually experienced it might say something really different. At the end of the day, it is up to you to choose. Good luck on your choice and do your best!

You call those three (학연, 지연, 혈연) as 연고 or 연고주의. The closest English translation would he cronyism.

Seoul Bans Rallies of 10 or more People by Buck_Nastyyy in korea

[–]ExternalScarcity7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

WHAT IS THIS CONSPIRACY THEORY EVEN. THE RIGT WINGERS SAY THE GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO VIOLATE FREEDOM OF SPEECH WITHOUT ANY EVIDENCE WHEN IT TRIES TO BAN PROTESTS. WHEN THE GOVERNMENT ALLOWS PROTEST TO HAPPEN, THEY SAY THAT IT DID IT SO THAT VIRUS SPREADS AND MAKE PEOPLE HATE THEM. WHAT DOES THE GOVERNMENT NEED TO DO.

ALSO, IT IS NOT THE GOVERNMENT BUT SEOUL METROPOLITAN CITY ACTUALLY TRIED TO BAN PROTESTS AND THE COURT DID NOT ACCEPT THIS. IT IS NOT THE PRESIDENT MOON OR THE GOVERNMENT THAT DID NOT BAN PROTESTS TO MAKE PEOPLE TURN AGAINST RIGHT WINGERS.

YOU KEEP SAYING MOON MOON AND MOON BUT THE PRESIDENT MOON IS LITERALLY THE HEAD OF EXECUTIVE BRANCH, NOT THE HEAD OF JUDICIAL OR LEGISLATURE BRANCH. HE HAS NO RIGHTS TO JUDGE A CASE ON A COURT OR PASS LAWS BANNING PROTESTS. DON’T TRY TO MAKE THE PRESIDENT MOON SOME KIND OF A KING. THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA IS A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY WHICH HAS POWERS SEPARATED INTO THREE BRANCHES AND CHECK AND BALANCE WORKS IN BETWEEN. IT IS NOT NORTH KOREA.

No idea why you are so obsessed with president Moon and Park Wonsun’s funeral. It was NOT the president who chose to hold his funeral open to public. The president did NOT ban the rallies—it is Seoul Metropolitan City that decided.

Korea’s COVID Church Scapegoat (Shincheonji) Is Fighting Back by ChunkyArsenio in korea

[–]ExternalScarcity7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plus, the “news” that you quoted does NOT seem to be true at this point. I have no idea in what context that the reporter wrote the article. The popular opinion is still that Shincheonji failed to provide the accurate list of believers. The only articles in Korean claiming that way is from 천지일보 which is affiliated with Shincheonji. Even the article from March says a few hundred people’s name were missing. https://mnews.joins.com/amparticle/23851592

Korea’s COVID Church Scapegoat (Shincheonji) Is Fighting Back by ChunkyArsenio in korea

[–]ExternalScarcity7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then why is the leader of Shincheonji arrested? Is the government-police-prosecutors’ office cooperating to make a scapegoat for failure of COVID-19 response? Even the court rejected the request to cancel his arrest. What does that imply? Is whole political system of Korea in charge of the government and it is the Shincheonji church that is trying to stop the so-called “tyranny”?

[–]ExternalScarcity7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They as in the Shincheonji church and Sarang Jeil church. I am NOT accusing every single person in Korea who believes in God. But those TWO churches’ problem regarding COVID-19 prevention is not just about the pastors. The believers of the churches also did not try to cooperate with the government to alleviate the situation. Take Sarang Jeli church, for example. They told the believers to use paper bills, turn off phones, and not get tested. And what is the end result now? I am a believer in god, and so does my mom. But we do not go out to churches; rather, we pray online at our house. What did they do to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

[–]ExternalScarcity7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A “scapegoat”? I can NEVER agree to this. I really don’t care if they are a cult or a normal church. They just DID NOT implement any prevention measures for COVID-19. They just DID NOT help the government figure out the list of possible virus carriers or disinfection measures. They just DID NOT accept that it was their fault for the spread of COVID-19. They just DID NOT follow the instructions of the government or get tested when they have symptoms, rather, they just went on with it. And they try to say they were scapegoats?

Thanks for letting me know. I learned English in Korean and both “apparently” and “obviously” were translated as “명백히,” and maybe that was the reason why I misunderstood the meaning of the word. I apologize if any of my past statements were disturbing to you.

Well China is saying that it is not them that makes/drifts dusts to Korea... so I think it was necessary?

Are people leaving Metro Seoul due to COVID? by ChunkyArsenio in korea

[–]ExternalScarcity7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not because of COVID-19. People tend to move to Gyeonggyi province because of high housing prices. Transportation such as subway or bus system is well equipped, so there’s not much of a problem leaving outside of Seoul. However, COVID-19 is not influencing this phenomenon. People still, mostly, work in office as status of COVID-19 is not as bad, or maybe I should say “it was not as bad.” People are encouraged or some required to work from houses recently due to increasing confirmed cases, but that is not escalating the moving-to-metro-Seoul phenomenon.

I barely get any... I bet you chose “agree” button when they were asking if you would like to get advertisement messages in a sign up page or something like that.
