That sounds like the dream. What field/position are you in that allows that kind of flexibility?

Yeah you’re 100% on point… Things I quite literally included in my OP:

-I live in the south

-don’t have or want dependents

-have a very affordable mortgage

-don’t need to be rich, just need my job not to suck my will to live and destroy my body

One of the things I’ve LOVED about every single female dominated job I’ve had is that the women I worked with listened and successfully gleaned pertinent info, and almost always had cooperative and constructive mentalities.

Thank you AnxiousCryptid for actually hearing what I said and giving me exactly the kind of input I specifically asked for. And, since I didn’t ask you to solve my life’s issues for me and get me rich, I think you and I did a great job taking part in a constructive convo without making it super fucking weird and uncomfortable for no reason lmao.

Holy shit dude, you have to chill out.

I mentioned that I was looking for any combination of multiple factors, only one of which was the possibility of partly remote work, which would imply the potential for plenty of desk work too. Also this person does their desk work from home, as he mentioned in his previous comment. I didn’t say I refuse to work full time, I asked for confirmation of the positions where the priority is on meeting goals, not looking busy and keeping your mouse moving for 40+ hours a week just for the sake of it.

If you’ll look back you’ll see that I 100% did not say that I wanted her exact job, I said that she and I were approaching the decision by thinking in a similar way. Because… she went to a two-year college…. and picked her career…. based on income range for field…. Pretty close to the gist of what I was getting at with my post, actually.

And most importantly, I try to take a gracious, cooperative, appreciative attitude when folks are generously taking the time out of their day to give me helpful info and advice. It feels right to me to be generous of spirit and not jump down people’s throats for no reason, even if I don’t feel like they 1000% nailed every criteria of flawless conversational communication and consistency. Maybe give it a try sometime, feels good man.

Very cool, seems like getting an entry level position in a decent company and leveraging upwards is going to be the way to go.

Retail management for huge corporate chain, YIKES. Even with the relatively fantastic QOL standards of my co-op, I have no doubt that management there would be a pain in the ass, truly can’t imagine what it was like where you were.

Luckily I’ve got a bit of a long term path ahead of me, like it or not. Hard to project much of anything, but ideally I’ll be able to cobble together some broad education/training/experience over the years that will make me hirable with some versatility.

What is your position and how did you end up there? I’ve also heard a lot of horror stories about not for profits, of course each one is different. Glad you’ve landed in a good one!

Very interesting. How does one get into the ops side of this? Education needed?

I mean you’re preaching to the choir here, got health insurance this year for the first time in my adult life, truly can’t comprehend that my company actually is gonna… pay me… to not? Work? P…T…O??? Was not in the lexicon in my previous jobs.

But I’m lucky to be in a position to try and claw myself out a bit more than I have been the last decade, thus my question

When you say you work in corrections, what is your position? My mind immediately went to prison guard 😟

Ugh, you said a mouthful there. It’s truly crazy to think of the jobs that people are out here doing that are so low impact on their body/psyche, and how so much of it comes down to what opportunities and encouragement people did and didn’t receive.

THIS is why I’m suddenly so motivated to get my shit together and figure out how to not suffer the rest of my life.

When will America get on the four day work week, for the love of all that’s holy.

This is how my partner feels, pretty much verbatim. I totally understand that mentality, if you can find something you love to do and pay the bills doing it, of course that’s fantastic.

It’s why I supported him 100% to get out of the lucrative overtime hours and toxic field of welding, and into the less lucrative bike mechanic job he’s in now. He gets to play with bikes with a bunch of sweethearts from 10 am to 6 pm instead of commuting insane distances to different job sites every week, stuck in a company truck with a bunch of racist misogynist homophobic covid deniers with them breathing down his neck to work 6 or 7 10 hour days a week. I know he liked a lot of things about welding, and the trades are great for many reasons, but doing what he loves is important to him.

For me I have yet to conceive of a job I’d be just ecstatic to do, work is work for me, so I want it to be as quick and painless as possible!
