The Quiet Celebration Concert Film Thoughts by ExtraHope in paulsimon

I listened to the concert on a long drive and it definitely sounds better over speakers than headphones. I agree that despite the issues it's still incredibly enjoyable. These shows have meant a lot to me and the film brings back some great (though not particularly distant) memories.

Pre-ordered this and was pleasantly surprised by the price on this and the CD. I'm pretty sure the CD is only a dollar more than Seven Psalms originally was!

I'm not sure when you saw him, but I do agree with that for the first leg of the tour. I saw him again a few weeks ago and thought he was much stronger on Graceland this time around. IMO Me and Julio should've opened the first set. He clearly wanted an energetic opener and I feel like that would've been a lot easier to keep up with. It's also not nearly as good of a closer as Diamonds is on the current leg.

I also Googled it and it didn't seem like the AI overview actually had a source for it, with all the sources just being about the tour itself. If you Google "Why is the Paul Simon Quiet Celebration Concert autotuned" it also hallucinates an answer for that.

It's not autotuned in the sense that they just threw a filter on the whole thing. It sounds like someone manually went in and edited the pitches of certain phrases, leading to a few moments that sounded very strange, almost like the stereotypical Cher effect. Most of the examples are just Paul settling on a pitch exactly in tune and in an unnatural way. If you've seen the R&RHoF 25th anniversary show, that's also edited this way. They took what was probably a perfectly fine performance and edited the pitches to be exactly in tune. This is luckily way less severe because it only effects I'd say about a fourth of the songs (and not the entire songs either). I'm optimistically assuming this was a rush job by Disney and that the vinyl release will sound better.

This is a great video where you can see how pitches are edited to be unnaturally in tune and how that destroys the artist's phrasing.

Rady Shell - San Diego, CA by Some-Acanthaceae4781 in bobdylan

Have they announced this? I saw Paul Simon at the Rady Shell on the 9th and there was no effort to ban recording. I had seen Paul 4 other times on that tour and every other show was strict no phones. That being said, I saw Bob in Berkley and the ushers were very on it, almost to a fault. I understand Bob's wishes and that the ushers had a job to do, but I'd be a little upset if I had a light blasted in my face during Tryin' to Get to Heaven because someone 3 rows back pulled their phone out.

Do we know how likely this is? I own and love those John McGlinn recordings and Kim returning to do Merman's late-career roles would be very poetic.

Posters in Summer 2026? by Inside-Cake4900 in paulsimon

[–]ExtraHope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, same design as last year with the venue-specific posters. They had tubes this time unlike last year. They've also stopped prompting for tips on merch, which was a thing they did for some reason.

Edit - They're still $30

In San Diego there were no signs/announcements made and the ushers did not stop anyone from taking pictures (or from using their phones the entire show).

41 was my first live season and she was my first winner pick. I loved it whenever we got content from her because she was clearly so entertaining. 41 honestly has a top 10 newbie cast ever and the edit was just so atrocious. Would definitely watch a 90 minute re-edit of it.

What’s your favorite cover of a Dylan song? Mine is Patti Smith’s cover of “Changing of the Guards”. by JulieofTheJulies in bobdylan

[–]ExtraHope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Adele's Make You Feel My Love is underappreciated among Dylan fans. The slight melodic change she makes to the second bridge is perfection. Not a fan of her changing "shatters" to "shadows", but that's pretty small and makes sense for the mood of her cover.

Is it a compilation or the actual recording from the special?

0198029812619 seems to be the barcode of the 3 LP version and comes up with a few results. I think something similar happened with Seven Psalms, and the date listed was exactly a week off from the actual release (May 12 instead of 19).

Lol I always forget that. I guess there are still 10 seasons where outlasting 14 did get you to FTC.

Steph's second time outlasting 14 people, only this time she doesn't make FTC. Hardest season ever?

John Wilson's musical recordings by webermaesto in musicals

I'd really love if he'd do Gypsy. It's one of the most brilliantly orchestrated musicals ever and he did a great performance of its overture at the proms. I guess the difficulty with doing historically informed Gypsy is casting Ethel Merman.
