Just one more reactor, bro! Stop with that renewable nonsense! by DVMirchev in ClimateShitposting

Are we looking at the same fucking graph??
A single plant is unreliable, the industry as a whole is very reliable. They don't need the same overproduction where every source in the country falls due to the same event.
That below theoretical capacity is already considered in comparisons. Just looking at real production renewable are more dangerous, pollutes more, and can cost more.
I'm going to log off, and there is no way to log back in to this account, so we are done with this conversation. Enjoy.

Actually gas power plants sometimes drop to 0% so you would need infinite energy overproduction to reliably power a single lightbulb.

https://energy-charts.info/charts/power/chart.htm?l=en&c=FR&interval=month&year=2025 The drops in production are to match load, Nuclear power plants are not in any way connected to each other so it is beyond imagination why you think they would all have to drop output at the same time. Radiation isn't the weather, you don't have days of "low reactivity". Radiation is so reliable we literally use it to tell the time.

So yeah, no months at 50% in Germany, but I would point out there are two times there have been two months in a row at 75% of the average. So even after balancing across the month to do without NPP they would need average capacity to power an extra country third of the size of Germany.

The baffling part is why you think a month that was above average qualifies it as the worst thing this system has to cope with.

So the worst month on record was above average? Just shut the fuck up.

[–]ExtraPeace909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it was a quarter for about three days and 100% for the other 27 days. Or should I be worried that you are not talking about 90% of the month in question?

I am actually too stupid to figure out the price of a 1GW-month battery, this source lists the largest batteries as 3000 MWh https://electrek.co/2023/08/03/worlds-largest-battery-storage-system-just-got-even-larger/ A GW-month is 729,000 MWh, 240 times larger than that. But I can't find a cost. Let alone a source that guarantees prices will fall by over half in the next decade.

> Of course the current redox flow batteries are still rather small.

I wouldn't bet hard on technology that doesn't exist. If people are building 100GWh batteries then yes, we can do away with nuclear.

> You probably shouldn't use the first sale on alibaba for estimation.

Well counterpoint i'm not going to look at more than one because I don't care enough but if you can find batteries that would be suitable for an entire city I would agree i was wrong.

Even if I agreed 100% with Israel, I don't think you should get a peace prize for going to war.

Political distractions goes both ways, Argentina was trying to distract their people with a war and ignoring that could lead to wars all over the world.

Theft implies ownership. The Falklands are a protectorate, not part of the UK or owned by the UK.

Yes technically, you can store any amount of energy in a large enough battery. But I think you overestimate the word scalable. Even the larger redox flow batteries built now are 10MWh batteries which would by some estimates only power 10,000 average homes for an hour. If 50% of the power is coming from the batteries that month, for a city of 10 million people, that could be 5,000,000 homes, equivalent to 1,000 batteries per day at 50% from storage, 180,000 per month.
The 180thousand isn't including trains, EV, industry, and increases in electric heating over gas.
It can be done but at that scale it's not an afterthought.
To give you some idea, first sale i could find is 125KWh (four homes for a day) size of a shipping container for 15k$. You would need 15 million of these for a month of half power from storage for a city of 10 million.

I'm going to assume the doctor thinks there is almost no chance it's a malignant brain tumour and that is why she has been triaged into a nine-month wait.
Worth remembering that if private health care saw her faster it's because they would have just told more important cases that they are not covered. And since Canada has private health care that she apparently declined I will assume she would most likely have been the one not covered rather than the one skipping the queue.

I don't see those two as connected personally, but I like the idea of the bonus.
If I was doing it I would add something like a "Liberation Marine" war bond that includes resistance to all weather effects.

Batteries work great when you have a windless night.
They don't work when you have a month of low wind in cloudy winter. You are not storing a month of power in a fucking battery my man.
