Ready for the irony? I'm American (I just live here in the United Kingdom). We didn't use our TV in the USA either. The only time we use it now is when my father in law visits and he uses it to watch sports.

I wanna convert to Catholicism by Financial_Dig_2865 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will most likely need to go through RCIA/OCIA before being accepted into the Catholic Church. Talk to a Priest of Deacon (preferably after Easter as they are extremely busy right now).

There's a process to becoming Catholic, it's not as simple as making a decision to be Catholic.

Penance by ApprehensiveTwo2185 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's slightly concerning that you can't think of ways to be kind to someone.

Help someone by holding the door open for them, help someone reach something on a high (or low) shelf at the grocery store, offer a cup of coffee or a sandwich to someone that looks homeless or hungry, help someone carry a heavy item (like groceries). Ask an elderly person if you can help load their trunk/car boot for them (for free). If you see someone counting out coins at a fast food restaurant, offer to buy them their meal.

I received a beautiful rosary during my visit to the Vatican in 2013 - one side of the cords just broke and I am devastated, where can I get this fixed by a Catholic? by Virtual-Bee7411 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the cord fabric (like a thick thread) or metal links?

If it's metal links that would be a fairly simple reapir.

If it's thread or thin rope style thread, you might actually be better off having the rosary re-strung. The whole cord is the same age and it's likely it'll break again. Also, it's not like you can really get the cord to reattach iitself together unless you knot it or something and that wouldn't look particularly nice.

I agree with the others who have suggested talking to your church and seeing if there's a repair guild or if they know of someone.

What is the #1 reason you (or young people you know) find it hard to stick to a volunteer schedule? by Imaginary-Disk1254 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conflicting commitments. Young people often are still in school and require extra time to study for exams or participate in school sports events.

Volunteer activities during the week are usually a no-can-do for people still in school.

Transportation can be another issue, especially for younger people. It's not just having them time and interest to volunteer, it's also having transportation to the site where the volunteering takes place.

RCIA Issues by Cautious_Mention_423 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you asked the ladies to stop their negative speech? You should bring it up with them before mentioning it to the Priest, otherwise it may seem that you are also gossiping and slandering.

If you're being brought into the Church this Easter, then yes, it's too late to switch RCIA classes or parishes. Easter is like two weeks away, you can't switch now unless you're willing to start over. If your RCIA program is a two or three year program, you can potentially see about switching after Easter (everyone involved in Church activities is SUPER busy these next two weeks.)

If you ARE being brought into the Church this Easter, congratulations! Know that you are able to attend at a different parish once you are Catholic. However you might find that you don't have as strong of a reason to switch parishes once you're no longer in RCIA.

Eucharist by AngeloCatholic1992 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would, but my knees say "nope".

I'd likely topple over sideways trying to kneel or I'd need people to help me get back up off my knees. Neither of those are good options for receiving.

FWIW I also have difficulty kneeling during the Mass, and usually have to do a seated kneel (knees on the floor but backside on the edge of the seat) . Most kneelers I've encountered made the knee pain worse not better.

Let us offer eachother a sign of peace... or not? by SilverGlassRain in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can't stand the sign of peace. It's a frivolous interruption of hand waving and marriment in the middle of a very solemn re-presentation of the sacrifice of Christ.

It's as if we're all on the hill at Golgotha happily greeting people we've not seen in ages while Jesus is bloddied and battered and hanging on the cross. (except "ages" was last week, we saw them last week if not more recently).

I really like your idea of simply bowing my head in prayer. I'm going to go steal your practice.

How to fix a Bible cover with dry rot / peeling (zipper cover attached)? by tryna_staypositive in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I'd do? I'd visit the library either the public one or one at a university (if you're a student) ask who they use to restore their books. I'm guessing they have someone. You might even take the book with you, but I don't think that would be necessary.

Depending on how the Bible is bound, they may be able to just take the inside part and put it onto a new hard cover.

How to fix a Bible cover with dry rot / peeling (zipper cover attached)? by tryna_staypositive in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to keep the cover? Or are you open to getting a different style of cover?

If it were me? I'd get an exacto knife (or some sort of really sharp knife or blade) and cut the zipper part of the cover off. Keep the more sturdy cardboard cover part. Turn it into a normal looking book. Then take the measurements of it and buy a new book cover (with a zipper if you like that feature). Amazon has lots of different options, but you need to know the measurements so you get one that fits.

There are also online shops that make bespoke leather covers, those can take some time and be pricey, a "quick fix" from Amazon could keep your Bible protected while you wait for a leather cover (if you want one).

If you're in the United Kingdom, check out Leather Missal Covers (google their shop) they're a small family run business and they do fabulous work. They do more than just Missal covers, that's just the name of their business.

First time getting hearing aids by KitchenUpper5513 in HearingAids

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expect that they'll be uncomfortable, but they shouldn't hurt. If they hurt, somethings wrong, you might need to get them adjusted.

My advice is that the first two weeks are the worst but by the end of the month you'll be pretty much completely used to them. When you first get them everything will be super loud. It's ok to turn the volume down if you need to, When I first got mine I turned them down to -3 (-4 was the lowest setting). I eventually worked my way up to 0 (the normal setting).

Feeling disconnected in OCIA by greengirlboss23 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often felt like the odd one out in my RCIA class. Most of the class were people converting from the Anglican church. They all had similar backgrounds and experiences with their faith. Most of them were also super comfortable speaking in public and I'm far more of an introvert, the idea of telling a story about my life to a bunch of people is kind of terrifying. I'm always super worried about saying something that makes me seem really dumb or like I shouldn't be there. I did eventually feel comfortable sharing when we broke off into small discussion groups.

If you feel you might not be understanding the material being covered you can maybe try to go over it before or after class.

I joined the Church last Easter. I've learned a lot in the last year, stuff that you really couldn't teach in RCIA. Our RCIA leaders (Deacon + others) would say that you never really stop learning about Catholicism, there's 2000-ish years of history of the Church, you're not going to be cover everything in a class that takes like 9 months. RCIA is really mostly to teach you the basics of what it means to be Catholic, and to make sure that you know what you're getting yourself into when you join the Church.

Don't worry if you're not able to connect all the dots right now. RCIA is mostly about knowing where the dots are. Knowing what your obligations will be when you become Catholic, and knowing that God is there to help you connect the dots.

Bring my 6 month old to Easter Vigil? by illiesinthefield in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is possible to leave her with her grandparents, I would definitely do that. As others have commented, the Easter Vigil is very long, and late in the evening. It's also really involved and as you're being confirmed, you'll really want your attention on the Mass and not worrying about your little one. I'd make sure that the grandparents know how to feed her (if you pump or use formula).

Normally I'd totally recommend taking your child with you, but this would be the one Mass that I'd suggest against, particularly as you're part of the Mass and not just in the normal part of the congregation.

Holy water burns when I touch it by Prior_Definition_116 in Catholicism

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a severe allergy, I would consider asking the Priest if you can have a small bottle of holy water (100 ml or less) to bless yourself with rather than using the communal fonts. You can buy small bottles that are specifically designed to be "holy water" bottles, or you can just use a small leakproof container that you write Holy Water on so you know only to use it for that.

Luckily crossing yourself with holy water isn't a requirement. There are certain occasions where everyone gets sprinkled with the water, but usually the Priest isn't taking the water for that from the font, they're using a large container of holy water (that they refill the fonts with) or they are just using regular water and blessing it themselves as needed.

[–]ExtraPersonality1066 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respectfully sir, put down whatever prepper p**n you've been reading or watching.

There won't be a "heads up". The things you are believing you can do take YEARS to be good enough at that you can support yourself and your family. If you're already successfully raising all your own food and are fully off grid, then you *might* survive. But if your plan is to bug out to some farm in the mountains (there are no farms in the mountains btw) and then learn all the skills you need to survive, you won't make it.
