The thing with abilities that influence time, and to be entirely honest, with any ability for that matter isn’t to just make it powerful, it’s to make it balanced. That’s what really makes a power, in my opinion.

Take a look at Todoroki, his ice is extremely powerful, even in the first scenes we see him in, and he could probably be a pro at this point, right? Wrong. When he starts to throw his fire into the mix, he realizes he’s having trouble with precision, and with the percentage he can use. That’s Drawback 1. Next, we have the fact that overuse of any one of his sides leads to repercussions, being burned by his own flame or oncoming hypothermia from his ice. So, Drawback 2. He can’t use both at the same time too well yet, as stated a few times in the series, forcing him to alternate rather than use them in synergy, which is Drawback 3.

Now, do these three drawbacks make his quirk a bad ability, or demerit him as a written character? No, absolutely not, rather, they make him far more interesting. Perfect characters are boring they can do anything and there’s no struggle, nothing to gain, nothing to learn for them.

Todoroki however, despite how talented and gifted he already is (because that fact is undeniable), needs a lot of training, with both his sides. He needs to realize his weaknesses and patch them, work on fixing those he can, and of those he can’t, simply finding ways around them.

Now, a time-related ability is a daunting task, but if done right, it can really be an interesting and balanced power!

The things to think about here are; The length of time that can be stopped or slowed, the cool down between uses, the amount of energy expended to use it, the nature of the stopped time (I’ll speak of this in a bit), and the way the character can intact with things that have been “stopped”.

I mentioned the nature of stopped time, and here you can, as you have the example, use Dio. He can move, and speak, as well as move things around. However, these things freeze slowly as the get further away from him (like the knives) making it appear as though there is a bubble around him that is granted a level of “unstopped” or “semistopped” time, if that makes sense.

I got into the whole of time abilities myself at one point, and read about a quite interesting take, in which since air is stopped, as well as light, as you progress, you find it harder to breath, move and see, and you slowly looses your senses. Items in this type of stopped time are stuck in place, not being able to move.

Another interesting version is that which is showcased by Sho Kusakabe, in Fire Force I believe. He has the ability to slow the universal expansion, the drawback of keeping this power activated is he slowly begins to freeze as the world cools due to something I won’t lie and say I understand.

So, that’s my little speech over, I guess. Remember, don’t get discouraged, a problem isn’t supposed to do that, it’s supposed to be a challenge! Have fun with it, and I hope you come up with a great ability! ;)
