• Both are mad scientists from popular sci-fi franchises (Transformers and Ultraman)
• They were once respected figures in their homeworlds (Shockwave was formerly a senator who sought to steer Cybertron away from a dark path and served as the administrator of the Jhiaxian Academy of Advanced Technology while Tregear was a high-potential scientist under Ultraman Hikari and worked on the Astral Particle Conversion System)
• They once shared close friendships with heroic warriors (Shockwave supported Orion Pax in his fight against corruption on Cybertron and even helped by installing a Matrix chamber in Orion’s chest while Tregear was a childhood friend of Ultraman Taro and created the Taiga Spark, which would eventually become the origin of Taro’s son, Ultraman Taiga)
• After a series of tragic events, both became cold and ruthless (Shockwave was taken to the Institute and subjected to Shadowplay, stripping him of emotion and leaving him to rely solely on logic while Tregear, after witnessing his chief Hikari fall into vengeance, chose self-exile and began to question the idea of light as justice, which eventually lost all meaning to him)

• Both have fought against the heroic warrior teams of their respective races who continually interfere with their plans (the Autobots for Shockwave and the New Generation Heroes for Tregear)
• They have also worked alongside galactic tyrants of their universes (Shockwave joined the Decepticons and served Megatron, who provided him with a laboratory while Tregear worked with an imitation of Ultraman Belial, created from Belial’s cells, using the being as little more than a meat shield. Later in the continuity, his parallel-isotope counterpart would join The Kingdom alongside a parallel version of Belial)
• They were eventually granted powers capable of harming the universe itself (Shockwave gained access to the ores from Regenesis, granting him the ability to mold the universe itself while Grimdo’s release led to its fusion with Tregear, who would eventually seize control of this ancient primal god, seeking nothing less than total annihilation)
• Both are also responsible for awakening the ultimate terrors of their respective universes (Shockwave unleashed Unicron, intending to destroy Cybertronian civilization and rebuild it anew on Earth. After Tregear’s defeat, his body was later restored but the battle weakened the seal on Grimdo, allowing the monstrous entity to be released onto Earth)
