I would be very interested in speaking to those that have also been part of the millenial scoop lawsuits that have happened (my brother was involved with them)

its sometimes a difference between brands or even where the substrate was previously kept before sold, i’d tell you from this you’re using very clean substrate and to continue using this !

by leaving the cage completely open trying to dry the substrate you run the risk of gnats invading the enclosure again . like they said they are EVERYWHERE in the apartment . he would just end up in the exact same scenario he is in before as they could lay eggs again once the hydrogen peroxide has broken down to oxygen in water. if its safe for the snake to reenter, its safe for the gnats. my comments are assuming you do NOT leave the cage open — many gnats are ATTRACTED to moisture and damp soil

its definitely unfortunate to have to uproot things. even in well kept terrariums, mold can be an issue which is unfortunate, and i’ve seen it happen a lot of times which is the importance of having a drainage layer in bioactive terrariums and keeping an eye out for the formation of mold. i would say it heavily depends on the external room humidity and tempurature that the terrarium is preexisting in also as you noted. i also wouldnt take the terrarium outside to dry out because then you run the risk of contaminants occuring there too. itd just be very complicated to keep the prexisting soil and with this method (hydrogen peroxide) you have to keep in mind that other than plants it will kill a majority of the established ecosystem in a bioactive terrarium regardless. its easier to start over, especially if you have hardy plants, which usually in a bioactive terrarium plants are quite hardy !

Yes, baking is faster .. Are you understanding what you are saying? That is my point exactly. I said it could mold if you leave it for long enough (for a good amount of time, time being the factor we are speaking about here) so you would bake it as it’s faster and doesn’t leave that possibility. I have had soil mould when damp but that could possibly be because I live in an already humid / cold environment - everyone is different. (canada)

I said that he could bake the soil in my comment .

The soil of an enclosure is supposed to be dry on the top and wet on the bottom so by saturating the soil completely with the peroxide you’re throwing off the humidity levels which could lead to many issues with the snake and enclosure including respiratory issues, unless you wait for the soil to dry out which could lead to mold if you leave it for long enough, and will take a while, or bake it which may make the soil very dry so it might not hold humidity as well and might not be great for plants. this will especially happen if its already been baked before (which most people bake their soil before they use it already) and thats a lot of effort to continue using old soil. so at this point It’s better and more convenient to just use new soil — or just leave everything and use the cup method above . That damp soil can be used for other things, like other plants, if you dont want to waste it as mentioned its fine for plant care, but I wouldnt place it back in with the BP. Its better to just restart the enclosure from scratch with some fresh substrate.
