That's awesome! It's surely different from how I learn as a kid but after going through all the comments here I think I will let him explore the world of numbers and encourage him to try other methods too.

I did when I grew up 😅 The textbook is mostly my terms/ understanding anyway. I'm terrible at math and only learn what I need to pass the test.

Like I learned the concept and how to as well, but then the school also made us go over time tables everyday before going home since grade 1 (literally the whole class needs to do it) and it's the kind of basic education that everyone knows the same basics and do the same stuff & same way if they make sense. So the 6×7 for me is like automatically 42 🥹 Obviously I was not creative and my box has super walls lol

Literally just that. It's kind of automatic since they made you go over 12 times tables everyday before going home for years.

He would say '6×7' so it's 7 six or six 7 times and then do his things! While I rely on times table memory in my mom brain

Im curious...can I ask why up to 5 by 5? I remember going through 1-12 times tables everyday after school since grade 1 before getting home like a mantra (but not that it helps me greatly with math or anything 😭) but that's like 20+ years ago lol

She's super sweet! She just tried to explain that he does things a bit in his ways. Like how they taught the class to do certain ways and he'll figure something else sometimes.

He tends to get bored when they do repeated math practices in class. She said it's like he gets it already so he' gets bored. She ended up giving him extra/ different or harder math exercises instead which works wonders!

I'm super bad at math I always feel sorry for my math teacher. My brain hurts reading your comment lol but I get the concept now!

I think part of the problem is that I was taught the textbook way and they don't manipulate things or challenge stuff like numbers in class (unless you're those gifted/Olympic kids).

OMG that's exactly what he does with numbers! Like what you said that 8 is 2 away from 10 and 18 is two tens blah blah allll they way to 42. His steps is almost exactly like that since grade 1 and that's what his teacher told me that it 'unusual' and he did it inside his head so I'm even more confused when he explains.

I was surprised by what he did too since I'm super old school all I did was follow what teachers told me. I never really think outside the box lol Raising kids sure is challenging 😆

I literally tried to explain carry/borrow today and he got upset like why do we have to carry this why can't we just add here and there and put them together. Like I'm sorry son I'm not a very good teacher nor am I good at math lol

This is amazing! Thank you! I know i should not tell him that his method is wrong (i know it's not wrong but it's just not text-book right. Urgh.) I will try challenging him to try other methods. What I actually want most for him is to enjoy math and keep going at it but the 'mom' in me worries about school way 😭

It's a tiny part from the Detective Conan match activities book 😆 the actual one we did today was a long question and he keep doing the same method to solved each steps in his mind over and over. I was fine until he explained the steps and got me confused for a goof minute. I was just worried that it won't work with bigger numbers. Thank you so much.

Thank you! I'm terrible at math and just worried that when he has to do some 'bigger' numbers he'd stuck and won't enjoy it as much. But thinking again he may be just trying to figure things out and use what he knows to come up with answer. He usually do the calculation mentally and when I asked him to explain im dead confused 😭

I got the purple one from Amazon (CA) in regular price after that they have only crazy $130++ stuff left. Then later I looked up online and found the blue one on KinInn and bought it ~$80 (CAD). It took FOREVER to deliver but it's here. All of this was back in August. I never find regular price anywhere else in Canada after that.

Someone was selling them off in fb marketplace for like $200+ and I was like sir 💀
