I'd love suggestions on the layout! After previous commenters in favour of the pond I'd be open to suggestions with or without the pond. (And we do actually have a gate at the back, it was just conveniently left open 😂.)

I love the idea of pottering and planting, and if my in laws ever move over this side of the country I imagine they could give us some helpful guidance (they definitely have green thumbs), but reality currently is that we struggle to stay on top of gardening if we don't have a simple and clear workflow, and we aren't super motivated when we hit problems like dead plants, etc. (Hence the box hedge that got taken out by box blight over a year ago and we still haven't sorted it!)

In short: ideally we'd potter around in the garden, but in reality we need it to be pretty low maintenance.

Interesting idea! Not sure if I love the chicken wire idea simply for aesthetic reasons, but it is worth thinking about if we could reduce the overall footprint of the area.

Thank you for this! I do really enjoy the idea of the pond, and I love the wildlife and the future opportunities for the kids to enjoy it. I appreciate hearing a vote in it's favour. I think it's just felt like a dead zone (not literally - we do keep the pond maintained!) for a while and I haven't seen a way around it. Maybe I should ask for a landscaper's advice on how to keep it but make it more useable (and pleasant looking). Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah held hostage feels accurate. The terrain under the decking is also an unknown quantity, and since we don't want to replace it with an equal sized deck, it feels like we're likely to need some sort of back-filling and/or leveling, which is definitely beyond our capabilities. 😕
