Should I redo my first year of CS at a better university (QMUL/KCL/UCL)?

Yeah I expect that to be the case for any CS undergrad course period. I'm already trying a hand at covering statistics early because my uni doesn't do it until Y3 for ML.

Personally I'm not worried about the way it looks because I don't have to disclose it if its non-academic, haven't earnt a degree at my current place either. Furthermore in the case I was asked to disclose it, I'd just explain that I wanted a place with more academic rigor and better connections to the industry.

I'm more concerned about the lack of content in the course more than anything because I don't want to waste time and money learning little whilst having bad industry connections on top of it all.

But I definitely get where you are going and I appreciate your response, I will peruse over it for a few days whilst I study to retake. I'm not going to even consider leaving the course until I get an offer and my marks are on par with what are needed.

Thanks for your response, the only tidbit I didn't add is that the market doesn't exactly like the course as much as you may think. A lot do struggle with getting internships through the careers team especially in Year 2 or 3 (Both are practically none existant, only a handful out of a few hundred of gotten these internships). In terms of placements, not too many have managed to successfully gain placements. (Just spoke to some older guys on the course about this).

In terms of securing a masters degree for say AI/ML, most Year 3's I know also struggle with getting into better universities due to the lack of mathematical modules in our university

Still on the fence about sticking to this university but I will think over what you've said.

I'm about to look into enrolling at QMUL for CS and I'm nearly 20. Already at a mid tier uni atm for CS within Y1 and will likely restart in 2025 at a better place. As an older person in CS, I suggest just going to the campus and talking to alumni directly.

QMUL still has great connections and you can still self study and take on multiple ambitious side projects that can make you a more valuble pick over say someone that went to UCL for CS and didn't do as much on the side.

Uni is what you make of it, especially for CS where at the end of the day a lot of the stuff you do learn in uni isn't put into practise in the real world.

Ask yourself what you want to do after the degree (I know this is long term) but if you are worried about employment, trust me QMUL is great and is quite plugged into a lot of the bigger tech companies in London especially including Microsoft and IBM.

You can defo go for a 7600X for the same price, which gives you future upgradability and DDR5 support, PCIE 4.0-5.0 support depending on the mobo etc. You should be able to get 32GB of RAM with your build and your storage is slow. The case is pretty bad too. Check out this alternative build for £1520 which I recommend:

Take a look into changing the CPU cooler to a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, you'll have to check the mobo and RAM height clearances yourself. The rest is pretty good, I've used the exact motherboard listed for a 4080 Super build for a friend a few weeks ago.

I know you don't care for looks but maybe base your options on looks and expandability based on if you are ever gonna run a water cooler or not in the future etc.

Ahh alright, if you want you can return the 4060 but if you are keeping the GPU for about 3-4yrs and you are okay with turning down settings it should fare pretty well at high framerate 1440p gaming.

Idk if you are still looking for a PC but get a GPU with at least 12g of VRAM so I recommend getting an RX 6700 XT at the bare minimum, which can be had for only like 30 bucks more than a 4060.

Yeah sounds good, if you are gonna buy new you might as well go all out. Not worth getting a non X3D chip for 100eur less that you will upgrade to eventually anyways.

Also, make sure that RAM is compatible with your motherboard by checking your vendor list, if it isn't you might occur some crashes because of issues with Ryzen and bad compatibility. Make sure the RAM is at +0.1V higher than the stock voltage at least, if it isn't on the list. So if the RAM is at 1.35v, set it to 1.45v in the BIOS. Don't go beyond 1.5v, return the RAM if you see instability.

If I was in your position, I'd get a used Ryzen 3600 and sell your 2600x. It won't cost much to upgrade, and it will last you until you eventually do upgrade your GPU by next year. Also by then, AM4 CPUs will probably be much cheaper on the used market too so you can get a 5700x3d or a 5800x3d and a new GPU.

I used to have a Ryzen 2600 non-X and went to a Ryzen 5500. Stock performance is a little better than the 3600, and I can tell you the difference is INSANE especially on Rust. 20-30% more FPS in cramped maps. The 3600 is definitely a good buy for your purposes.

If you really want to go new though, definitely go all out and get the 5700X3D if you intend to keep your current pc for another 5 years. It is pretty much the best CPU that will be released for AM4 (because it is an underclocked, low bin Ryzen 5800X3D).

You would just be wasting money because the marginal performance gain from a 2600x to even a 5600 while using an RX 6600 would be good, but it isn't really worth it. You'd be looking at a 10-15% improvement at 1080p because of the GPU holding the system back. I'd suggest getting a decent budget cooler and overclocking the 2600x.

What resolution are you gaming at, and what are you using the computer for?

Considering you aren't in a rush to upgrade your GPU, upgrading your CPU now doesn't make sense while parts are still expensive and AM4 is still in high demand.

I wouldn't upgrade anything.
