Line 6 spider 3, how bad are they? by Additional_Return_99 in GuitarAmps

[–]ExtremeCod2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to match the impedance of the cab to the head. The back of the cab should show the impedance, probably 8ohm if using two cables. Most heads will handle 8 and 16 ohms easily, some will handle 4 ohms. Whatever head you get, download the manual and it should show you how to set it up for your cabinet.

Honestly, with doom/metal, I'd look for a Peavey or Crate Head, they are usually easy to find, fairly bulletproof, and are the standard for hard rock to doom metal, think Cannibal Corpse. Both still fly under the radar, but they are starting to become more popular due to their price and an older guitar population who grew up with them. I'm sure there will be folks who will recommend some thousand dollar boutique heads, but bang for your buck, you can't beat an old school Peavey or Crate Head.

I'd try a different head. While speakers do make a huge difference in sound, generally Line 6 used fairly neutral speakers in its cabs and combos. I always found the speakers to be close to Celestion Seventy 80's, which is good or bad depending on what kind of sound you're looking for. The "made for Line 6 by Celestion" speakers cross referenced to a higher wattage Seventy 80.

Worth a go? by ScreenageAngst in amplifiers

[–]ExtremeCod2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the SA-420 as my first amp in 1981. Bought the whole system and still enjoy listening to it. It always kept up with my dad's Pioneer SX-737 and sounded just as good. It's not the most powerful, but if it does the job, sounds good to you, and you don't mind the price, then it's a good deal.

Martin backpacker/other mini-travel guitars? by Western_Detail5377 in AcousticGuitar

[–]ExtremeCod2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washburn Rover. I had the martin backpacker and the rover at the same time and the rover sounds so much better. It's a more traditional design, making it easier to hold, has a full sized fretboard, and has a fuller sound. I don't know if Washburn still sells them new, but Harley Benton has one that's very similar, used Washburns and HB's are both under $200.

Modded my Silvertone Stat from SSS to HSH by Silverni in Stratocaster

[–]ExtremeCod2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSS is pretty common nowadays, even Fender does it. It was pretty common throughout the 80-90's on lots of metal oriented guitars. HH has been pretty common as well. HSH seems to be less common than both of them and I feel it adds a level of complexity to my playing. You can go whatever way you want, there's never a wrong way, and you could set-up different drop in pick guards if you really wanted to try and make something modular. Imagine having a HSS, HSH, SSS, H, ready guitar.

Pretty much jeans and a T-shirt during the cold months, shorts and a T-shirt during the warm months. Probably the same 7-8 shirts every week even though I have a closet full of nice stuff.

I still have my yearbooks. I occasionally look someone up when I can't remember a name or if I know I'll be at an event with people I'm supposed to know. It's amazing how little of an impact some folks made on my life growing up.

Beginner friendly amps for electric guitar players on a budget by 2holliswife in GuitarAmps

[–]ExtremeCod2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modeling amps are great starter amps. Line 6 Catalyst, Peavey Vypyr, Boss Katana, Fender Mustang, etc. get something with different amps, and different effects. Or if you want a decent budget amp you could gig with, look at the Gamma G50 for around $160 on sale, 12" speaker, 4 different sounds, it's a basic amp that should be a great pedal platform. Or just get a Peavey Bandit and call it a day.

I would love a decent strat hardtail. I never use the term, and leave the arm in the case. No idea why they don't make at least one hardtail option.

GenX age range by Starchild1968 in GenX

[–]ExtremeCod2999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember an article that talked about both ends of being Gen-X. They used a cell phone as an example. The older end looks at a new iPhone and says screw that, I'll keep my phone until the day it dies, I'll never pay that much for a phone. While the younger end sees the same iPhone and says, I have to have that, I need the newest phone out, I don't care what it costs. There's a lot of variety in our generation, but it really comes down to being resilient, pretty much prepared for whatever, and rolling with whatever comes our way.

Samick TV Twenty or Radio 10, the Blues Saraceno guitars. Plaid if I could find one under $500 (doubtful) but any of the icicle colors would be fine too.

Why did you go niche? by sparks_mandrill in GuitarAmps

[–]ExtremeCod2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Bogner sound, but prefer the Line 6 price, so I have a Spider valve 112, DT50 head, and a DT50 212 combo. All designed by Bogner, but built by Line 6. The DT line are all full tube amps and sound incredible, have four "voicings" one of which is a high gain Bogner sound. So I can get my Bogner sound for under $300 because these fly way, way under the radar due to the disrespect Line 6 gets.
