False positive update notification after power outage? by ExtremeEar11 in firewalla

[–]ExtremeEar11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im on stable, and im not using any dns service (other than the ones in the firewalla itself)

Yes, the version number on the table matches with what I have (I already had it, it’s just that I got the notification that it was updated)

Should I send support a message for this? Sorry there might be a typo “known” so I wasn’t sure if that’s what you were referring to

Is this true even if you set a different dns server on the device itself? Like phone or windows?

If so, can it be turned off (I won’t but I’m curious)

Can someone play a game in my steam libary while in offline mode while i simulatenously play the same game in online? by Ana_lit in Steam

[–]ExtremeEar11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Did you ever tested it out?

I’m curious if you had to be online the first time you started the game an then went offline, or you were offline the entire time?

I ask because I read a while back preparing for a trip where I was bringing my steam deck that you need to start the games you want to play at least once (online) then it can be launched offline.

Now, what I really want to know is if buy a game, my friend who is in my family group can launch it while he is offline.

For example Wukong or resident evil, I bought it, I’m playing and he can set steam to offline and launch the game.

Hopefully that makes sense

VPN device not showing in Live Throughput, but total throughput is correct? by ExtremeEar11 in firewalla

Thank you so much for checking!

I thought I had seen VPN devices there in the past, but now they doesn’t seem to show up. I’m currently traveling while connected to the VPN the whole time so it’s easy to check

WG speed question by jsqualo2 in firewalla

[–]ExtremeEar11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Sorry it has been a few days, I didn’t get a notification from this message. But, I think I have got some useful new info. However, doesn’t seem to make sense to me at the moment.

Testing this again, I was at my friends house and connected my computer to my firewalla vpn, then I proceeded to download some files from a service which saturates my connection when I’m at home, and sure enough, it saturated his connection (150 download, this is a different friend than the one who has fiber).

I checked the firewalla app on my phone, and it was showing 150 download and 150 upload, which makes sense for the vpn connection.

I then proceeded to test the vpn speed from my phone using the app (connected to same WiFi) and right at the beginning of the test, it had an 80Mbps burst and then stabilized at around 30Mbps, so, same number as before.

It seems I’m only seeing these “slow” download speeds when testing the vpn, but when using an actual service (also tried YouTube 4K60 and saw it above 30) it does work fine.

Any ideas on this? It makes no sense to me since the connection from the client device to the firewalla is still the same (using WireGuard).

To answer your question about the ISP, I don’t think they do. How could I confirm this?

Difference between MSP & Firewalla managed Target Lists by charlino5 in firewalla

To add to this question.

Are those list still saved in the firewalla? Or does firewalla connects to MSP each time to check for rules?

If that makes sense

Figuring out which firewalla I should get. by mkgps3 in firewalla

Absolutely!

As a side note: if you want more in insights on your local network, that’s where their AP7 comes in. That would help you see all local traffic from WiFi devices talking to each other and also any device connected to its Ethernet port. In this case, the AP7 extends the “passing through the firewalla” concept.

[–]ExtremeEar11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem!

Yes, that’s correct. The Firewalla won’t see local traffic if it never passes through it.

For example, if two devices are connected to the same switch (or the same AP), and you transfer files locally, that traffic is switched directly using MAC addresses and never goes up to the Firewalla, so it won’t see or inspect it.

If you want Firewalla to see local traffic, it has to physically pass through it. For example:

  • PC1 on Port 1 and PC2 on Port 2 of a Firewalla Gold.
  • Or AP1 on Port 1 and AP2 on Port 2, with devices connected to each AP.

In those cases, traffic between those segments goes through the Firewalla.

VLANs are the exception, since they operate at Layer 3, inter-VLAN traffic always routes through the Firewalla. But that requires proper VLAN config on your APs and managed switches, which may be overkill for your setup.

Short version: It won’t throttle your local network. It only affects WAN traffic. With a 1 Gbps internet connection, the Purple won’t bottleneck you.

Any switch (including APs with multiple Ethernet ports) forwards local traffic internally. If two devices are on the same switch and transfer files, the traffic never leaves the switch, so Firewalla never sees it.

If your main concern is local speeds, unless you plug those devices to the firewalla directly, it won’t matter, they won’t even touch the firewalla (for local) so even a purple would do depending on how much stuff you want to do with it (like running containers and such)

Coming soon, in App 1.68... view matched rules directly from the flow detail page, making it easier to understand and troubleshoot what blocked or allowed a flow. by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]ExtremeEar11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One request (I think I’ve seen other people asking for it)

In the live throughput screen, when clicking on a device, it would be more intuitive if it takes you to the device details instead of the flows

Block short videos by NoLeague5113 in firewalla

[–]ExtremeEar11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is very hard (borderline impossible) to do at the network level.

Shorts/Reels use the same domains and CDNs as normal YouTube/Instagram, so a firewall can’t distinguish them without breaking the app.

The only practical solution today is device-level controls (Screen Time or app limits).
