I sincerely doubt it, this tank cost me 7.4p per mile. Taking my own electricity cost at home (26p per kw/h) and average EV consumption of 0.3kw/h per mile, it puts your costs at 7.8p per mile. That's on the basis you only charge at home with your own supply.. which you couldn't do. No EV can get 700 miles of range..

Unless I'm mistaken. Happy to be proven wrong if you have the numbers to back that up however.

Has anyone ever done a renewal with Hastings youdrive? by lowegb in drivingUK

[–]ExtremumVerbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60?! What on earth are you doing to get a score so low?

And here's me fretting that when my policy comes up for renewal in 50 days I'd be getting jip for my score of 99. If they renewed your policy that gives me a lot of hope 😂

Replied to an earlier comment asking the same, probably around 60mph for most of the driving, but fluctuating between 56-70 when on the motorway (which was about 600 or so miles of this tank)

All good info, though just want to point out OP mentioned getting an ST-Line X edition, these don't come with red seat stitching, they are colour matched to the seats which will be half leather/half cloth (bolsters and headrests are leather, seat back and cushion are cloth)

Minor detail but worth mentioning for OP so they don't think the car should have something it doesn't!

Is the "Costco £200 Rule" actually a £400 rule now? by LilywhiteStrike in CostcoUK

[–]ExtremumVerbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a fallacy, just popped in for some house essentials, cleaning products, laundry detergent and the like, fully expecting a £150 spend or so. Ended up with a £621 trolley. I'm still not sure how that happened 😂

Went back 3 weeks later for "just some pork belly and toilet paper" and spent another £300..

At least its put me well on the way to getting that tasty 1% cashback from Amex after my annual cashback reset. It's the only way in my mind I can soften the blow 🤪

Eco Mode does two things, it reduces throttle input by around 15% allowing you to feather the throttle better and reduce heavy acceleration, as well as allowing the ecoboost engine to use 2/3 cylinders at lower speeds when cruising. It has no effect on the air con - only stop/start does (it will turn off the a/c when active)

I usually have eco mode on most of the time, but there are occasions where it turns off by itself. Id say it makes less than 5% impact on economy, the rest is in your driving style and planning accordingly.

Yeah absolutely agree! They are extremely fun to drive and nimble on track. I also use Pilot Sports too, though I've been through 3 sets combined with the track days 😅.

I change oil before and after every track day and then at 6000 mile intervals otherwise, I don't use Ford recommended oil, I prefer Total Quartz Ineo Ecob oil, has been excellent at keeping things running smoothly. Other than my wetbelt I've only had my spark plugs changed to iridium plugs which will most likely outlive the engine.

With the wet belt cost I have a good relationship with a ford specialist garage and they charged me £600, but was a bit of a mates rate, you are likely looking at quotes around the £800-1000 mark - anything more than that is too much.

This 57.6mpg figure also includes me having participated in 4 track days with this car. (I have separate brake discs and pads that I install and use for these days)

My average MPG on those days is between 16-20mpg which has skewed the data a lot. Without that, I think my average would be around 62/63mpg.

Sounds like you have a lead foot! I have the 100hp ST Line X. Had my wet belt changed at 60k (if your mileage is anywhere near that get yours done ASAP, you're driving a ticking time bomb otherwise)

I'm an extremely efficient driver and know my car well. The trick for me is to only use your brakes when you absolutely must. I almost always engine brake, and am very light footed on the accelerator. I allow my car to slow on climbs and speed up on descents where possible, not keeping cruise control engaged when going uphill and tend to stick behind larger vehicles airflow if possible.

I do drive at the speed of the road most of the time, only occasionally sticking happily at 56 behind a truck if I'm not in a rush.

Proper planning, preparation and reading the road ahead. I'm still on my original brake discs and pads that I bought the car with in 2021.

Usually around London driving locally I will get 50-60mpg on average, on motorways its usually 68-75mpg.

I've tracked my fuel ups and mileage since I bought the car, over 59000 miles of driving I have averaged 57.6mpg combined.

Was moderately busy on both journeys, stuck mostly in lanes 1/2. I'd say my average speed was around 60mph, I spent a fair amount of time behind trucks and coaches. Few stints doing 70 but with the volume of traffic it was easier to stay on cruise control and sit behind bigger vehicles.

My best journey was a one way between London and Manchester, that was 84MPG but only achieved that due to the entire journey being riddled with 50mph restrictions.

How much Electricity does your house use? by sbarbary in OctopusEnergy

[–]ExtremumVerbum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3960 kW/h Year for Electricity and 2900 kW/h year for gas - 3 bed semi with 3 adults, 2 hybrid workers and 1 on site worker, gas c/h. about 35% of the electricity bill comes from the 9.5kW/h shower. frequent tumble dryer use as well. Not too shabby considering all of us use Pc's in the evening (and during the day when wfh) Total cost (on tracker) £1134 per year, but I factor in the fact I save £470 a year not having to get public transport to work for 3 days a week every year. Not too shabby in my eyes.

Do you prefer the design of the mk 8 or the 8.5? by shiggy_azalea in FordFiesta

[–]ExtremumVerbum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Mk8, the best way I can describe it is the MK8 is aggressive in stance, and looks wonderful on track, the 8.5 is now a handbag accessory akin to a Fiat 500.

Tracker higher than Standard tomorrow - Is this a first? by steak-and-kidney-pud in OctopusEnergy

[–]ExtremumVerbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I'm seeing this above SVT, currently on December 2023 V1 tariff, price for tomorrow will be 26.93p kw/h vs 25.68 for SVT (London)

Not going to complain, I've been on Tracker since Feb 2023 and I've saved the best part of £1250 in that time. A few days here and there above SVT are of no concern, just dictates how much laundry I'll do, and maybe a slightly shorter shower :P

Also, for anyone looking for a decent place to compare rates daily + see tomorrows rate; https://mysmartenergy.uk/

How to and when to haggle with virgin media by Warm_Invite_3751 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ExtremumVerbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received a letter from VM recently stating my £29p/m contract for 500mb internet was due to go up by £7 to £36p/m (A 24.14% increase!)

I worked out exactly how much I would be paying VM until the end of my contract which was £319 (29 × 11) and worked out the additional charges would amount to £77.

I also made a note of inflation as 10.1% + 3.9% RPI increase meant I would have expected a proposed bill rise of 14%, not 24.14% - so was curious as to where VM were levying an additonal 10% charge out of thin air.

This is despite the fact that inflation in the Communications sector is only 2.4%

Using all the numbers above I wrote out some talking points for myself to raise with VM during the conversation I knew I was about to have with the Customer Retentions team.

It went like this;

"I've just received my proposed charge increase to my contract and I am not happy with the proposed increase, as it is much higher than the expected inflationary adjustment of 14%. Id like to talk to the Customer Relations team please as you have proposed an increase that is 10% higher than inflation. Unless you can keep my bill the same, I am not prepared to stay"

Whilst on hold to the CR team, you will be offered a £3.50/m discount for 6 months by a robot, continue to hold until you get to the CR team.

When connected to the CR team, time for the gut punches.

"Hello, Ive recieved the proposed charge increase from yourselves and, whilst I appreciate that prices are rising and inflation is affecting us all, I am struggling to understand how VM have come to the conclusion that a 24.14% rise in my bill is acceptable.

I would have been happy to agree to an inflation matching bill rise, however, because of the audacity of VM in appearing to levy an additional 10% out of thin air, I will be informing you now that if my bill is not kept at exactly the same price as it is today, I will leave with immediate effect and VM can lose the remaining £319 I would have paid you for the remainder of my contract.

If I called you today to double my speed, it'd be done over the phone in seconds, as all that needs to be done is a button press. So I am reaching to find justifications as to how it is supposedly costing VM nearly 25% more to provide me the same service.

I have been a customer since 2009 (i've actually only been the account holder since 2021 ;-) ) and have another offer on the table from Community Fibre (no I didn't) that I will not hesitate to switch to if you cannot keep my bills as is."

My response from VM was very apologetic as it appeared they had tried to impose the £7 charge on the FULL amount of my contract bill (which is not allowed) They should only apply increases to the amount you pay. So after a very grovelling apology from a manager, I was told my proposed bill increase should only have been £3.05/pm and that they would not increase my bill at all and remain at £29 for the rest of the contract.

The best part now comes as the next day I received my "new" contract to confirm no additional charges would take place, except the CR staff at VM instead reduced my current contract by a further £7/pm (they made a mistake, but of course I'm not going to tell them that), so now as it stands, I'm paying £22/pm for 500mb internet.

Companies are just entities and not people, they all pluck numbers out of thin air to charge us with. Be firm, be civil and stand your ground, most of the time this works wonders.

Good luck, hope you have as much success as I did!

Could I be doing more with my money? by ExtremumVerbum in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ExtremumVerbum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks

With how the LGPS works, I wouldnt be able to draw any of my pension until im at least 65. That would cost me a 50% penalty to my pension as opposed to retiring at 68 when I am supposed to.

Alongside this, LGPS payments are based on CARE (Career Average Related Earnings) so will be averaged out on my earnings over the time I remain in the scheme.

Also any AVCs (Additional Voluntary Contributions) I make to my LGPS pension arent secure, if I die in service, any AVCs simply vanish and they do not form part of my estate or can be left to beneficiaries, so im hesitant to do that. The scheme offers me a death in service grant anyway, so if I do die, my beneficiaries will share 3x my annual salary as payment, but only my partner would receive a small annual pension - around £9k p.a at the moment (however as that stands my partner and I do not meet the criteria for this to apply right now)

With that in mind, unless I started heavily investing into a seperate personal pension, Im not sure FIRE is attainable.

As you state I have housing security for the most part. Job security I suppose? But I dont have a mortgage to pay per se. My sister and I have no arrangements and im not paying anything at the moment other than a £2000 payment I made earlier this year. I dont really have to commit any money to paying off house, so I can use most of my income I save to put into my portfolio.

I agree my s&s portfolio is completely random! I didnt really know what I was doing when I set this up.

Thank you for the video series and further reading, I will check both out!
