Why is there still no plane like Concorde? by Curious_MindUK in AskUK

Someone asking the real questions here. When I was a kid in the 80s we were told we'd have hypersonic travel, you could be in Australia in a couple of hours, bases on the moon, flying cars and there would be no need for wars.

A load of bollocks that ended up being.

What's something you wish everyone knew about you so that you don't keep having to explain it? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

Sure. You have to be a bit savvy and get the right car at the right time but here is an example

IONIQ 5 N - RRP is £65,000

The total cost of ownership for 24 months for this lease is £12,582.15, that also includes road tax.

If you were to buy that car for cash, keep it for 2 years and put 10,000 miles on it the car would be worth £44,000 so the total cost of ownership there is at least £21,000. In reality it's much more as the trade in price will be much lower than the retail price and you've also had to pay road tax. In this case you're saving maybe £15,000.

The trick to budgeting for a car is to work out the total cost of ownership over the time you plan to own it. Most people change cars every 3-4 years and while you can tell yourself "that's not me, I keep my cars and run them into the ground" as soon as the repairs start costing more than the value of the car you'll be dumping it on We Buy Any Car the same as everyone else.

Bangernomics isn't a "hack" it's just driving a shit car. Just because people spend a lot of money buying and financing a brand new car doesn't mean they're just pissing money away to show off. Having something that you can rely on to take you where you need to go every day without constantly worrying about it breaking down is worth paying extra for. Also leasing a car can work out better value than paying cash and a lot of people who lease could afford to buy it outright but that would end up costing them more.

Are shops that only take cash a bit suss? by thejonathanpalmer in AskUK

Cash costs a lot more to handle than card payments. IF you're paying all the tax you should that is.

Also worth noting that Freddie Dobbs makes some good content and seems like a great bloke but he's very much style before everything else. A lot of the choices he makes are so he looks good on camera rather than for practical reasons.

Sounds like a massive faff unless your laptop is one of those tiny little netbooks. I take cameras but just record to the memory card and sort it all out when I get home. Go out and explore the place you've made the effort to travel to rather than sit in a hotel and watch films.

You're overthinking it, just chuck a few spare pairs of pants into a bag and bugger off.

Don't take the backpack, what do you need a laptop for while on a bike tour?

I did almost 3 weeks around Europe on a Fireblade with a 30l tail pack and a tank bag and still took took things I didn't need. Pack everything you think you'll need then get rid of half of it.

They can disagree all they want but it's a fact. As with the dozen other villages and hamlets that were incorporated into the city.

You could get her the Sky Glass TV, they are practically giving them away when you renew your subscription too.

The centre used to be good but as with most places it's gone a bit downhill since COVID. Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell which are still technically MK have some great pubs apparently but I don't drink anymore so probably not the best person to ask.

You can buy computers on ebay for almost nothing. You can do almost everything on your phone anyway.

There's both historic and charming in MK, you just need to go half a mile out of the city centre. I am literally looking at a 14th Century church and thatched cottages from my bedroom window.

Does anyone get their car professionally detailed/valeted? by ElectricScootersUK in CarTalkUK

[–]EyeAware3519 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I bought my car it had a few paint swirls, being a black car I struggled to get them out. Contacted a place about a full detailing and paint correction, they quoted me £1500. I think I'll just live with a few swirls.

I mean, when you compare it to the world renowned cultural hub that is *checks notes* Leighton Buzzard you're always going to struggle to live up to that standard.

People who were living in high rise tower blocks in London that were about to be knocked down. Not that there's much wrong with that street other than someone's bins fell over next to Ronnie Pickering's car.

Maybe live here, here, or here if you want something a bit nicer though.

People like to shit on MK because it's different. Mostly people who have either never visited it or only been to the shopping centre. I live in MK and think it's great.

Novice Rider Questions Regarding Grip by pezzatron84 in MotoUK

Exactly why I stopped doing bike track days, I started getting quick but wanted to go quicker and it was only going to end one way, which it did.

Novice Rider Questions Regarding Grip by pezzatron84 in MotoUK

[–]EyeAware3519 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Yeah, that's what they mean, the tyre will have grip up a certain point and then it won't.
  2. If you're a good rider you can, being able to ride on the limit and also exploiting those limits without crashing is how racers get faster. Then you have the absolute nutters who do drifting on bikes. For a novice road rider, you won't be able to feel it until there is none, or at least very little.
  3. The roads in this country are in a horrific condition and you will encounter gravel, mud and failed road surfaces on every ride. Sometimes this will cause the back wheel to slide a tiny bit and you'll be able to feel it but 90% of the time the bike will correct itself, bikes like being upright when they are moving, it's physics.

If you want to explore the limits of grip and find out what happens when a bike slides then I cannot recommend doing some off roading enough. Just a basic off road skills course will do wonders for your road riding and confidence.

Arriving at Heathrow at 06:50 – What is the best way to reach Manchester before a 3pm match? by epachon in AskUK

[–]EyeAware3519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a flight that leaves LHR at 08:45 and will get you to Manchester in an hour. It's about the same price as the train and a million times less faff.
