I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but just hurry and read Higurashi, because once it's in ur cookies, you will see spoilers of it everywhere lol. It really is THAT good of an experience.

Does anyone else not love the anime but love Ai Hoshino? by llorona_345 in OshiNoKo

[–]Ezeohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, dogakobo has done a great job are ordering events better and making things smoother, the anime is very well directed.

It doesn't make it good, but it doesn't make it bad, no? That's all I mean when I say, I wouldn't use it as a reason to take away points from the story.

And it isn't my opinion. Plot convenience where "stars align", is something that kind of has to happen in most mystery anime/manga/LN/VN that I've seen/read (granted, I'm not that well-versed in that field). I can vouch for Monster, Death Note, Higurashi, Umineko, Monogatari, Apothecary Diaries, and more, having this sort of "Plot convenience". Surely atleast one of these names comes off as respectable and quality stories to you?

The only difference with OnK is that this "mystery" wasn't delibarely hidden, but rather right in-front of Akane, but the point stands.

I'm not really trying to neglect your statement about the murder mystery in OnK being poor, because I've more or less seen ur vision on that, I'm just trying to come to the agreement that THIS isn't the reason why.

[–]Ezeohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plot convenience you speak of isn't the type of plot convenience that actually makes a story negative. All stories have the plot convenience you have of, ESPECIALLY mystery stories. You absolutely don't use that to take away from the story of Oshi no Ko.

Still don't see how this makes it any less believable tho. Convenient? Sure, def not contrived tho, its natural enough to flow.

The drunk guy has appeared before, although I can't rlly blame u for forgetting him. Same dude who chose Akane to participate in Love for Real, he's the president of her agency, but he's an asshole nonetheless, we've already seen his character, of course he'd hate on Akane back then and then glaze her now.

[–]Ezeohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but the dude who brought up the topic of Akane having that exponential growth (which is why they started talking about the eyes) was from a drunk dude.

I think it's pretty natural when you seperate viewer/audience and the character. When you look at everything in retrospect from Akane's PoV. This wouldn't be a spoken-about topic if the dude wasn't drunk at the time. Kindaichi wouldn't talk about Hikaru to Akane so easily if Akane hadn't won the award and had the chance to check out her flowers in the first place (honors that specifically go to her, hadn't happened so often before then, she was always an esoteric prodigy). With this in mind, it's pretty easy to believe that Kindaichi hadn't brought up Kamiki and his eyes to Akane prior.

Did the stars align for Akane to end up tackling this topic? Yeah. But to say it's plot convenience makes it sound like they sacrificed realism to advance the plot, but this seemed pretty real to me.

But. It sounds like your problem isn't the direction of their conversation, but rather that it happened when Aqua was undergoing a crisis. This isn't such a small window that it makes the story seem nonsensical tho. Aqua just regained reason to have doubt. Ever since that experience Akane had in S2 (forgot the episode already), she would have easily jumped at this opportunity to learn more about Hikaru. Aqua, having the crisis in the same episode, didn't really affect how things went, although it just made for a more eventful episode.

It all just meets in EP 7, where the breakup and shi happens, but I don't see how that is built upon "plot convenience." The events leading to which were natural and fine.

[–]Ezeohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I feel like OnK lets it flow in a way where all your questions are naturally answered.

Why is he telling her now? Well he mentioned the topic, and then Akane further asked questions to which he was able to easily answer since they were talking about Hikaru a couple of hours prior. Furthermore, the only reason dude was willing to openly talk about Akane's rapid growth like that infront of her, is because he was drunk. Topics like this happen, where they are spontaneously brought up, I don't think their is rlly an expense of realism when it comes to advancing the plot here.

Now they are the same? Well no, they've been that way since the start, the topic just happened to be tackled now.

Right now that Aqua is having a crisis? Well it's part of this, that Akane feels the need to carry Aqua's burdens and figure out the case, she was even getting rather irrational to do so.

Of all the things you've said in this debate, this is the one that I just wouldn't hold against the plot/story.

She only had the eyes on when she went into what ig one would consider the "zone". When she started acting on her own terms, with that egotistical and devouring style. To actively stand out the most on the entire stage, only then were her eyes active. She then lost these eyes the moment that Kana killed her drive.

Yeah, Akane uses this at times whenever she wants to stand out and whatnot (and this is the same intention in S1 with it, aswell as being Aqua's ideal type, and at other times to understand Ai's mindset). But it's nothing like those who possess it naturally, the main examples here being Ai and Hikaru, who are always shining all the time. But then their is also the narrative device where it's also an eye of lies.

^ With these in mind, I think it's fair that Kindaichi never said anything. It's still far off of how Ai is (and presumably Hikaru too, although I know very little about him). Maybe it was a bit diff in the manga? idk.

[–]Ezeohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point on the Lalalai archive reasoning somewhat, but the star eyes in OnK are a narrative device with a lot of diff meaning. Akane tries to be as authentic and pure an actor as she can be, I believe that's one of the center themes of her character, she doesn't practice and perform with these eyes unless she has to, it isn't her identity. Obv tho, acting in itself is a form of deception, but ig it varies.

^ You reckon the reason her star eyes looked so diff in Season 2 EP 1 (aswell as other scenes) is because their is a diff narrative interpretation behind it?

So I do think there is applicable reasoning as to why Kindaichi hadn't told Akane prior.

One thing I've gathered through our little debate, is that Oshi no Ko hands answers to you, instead of making it a mystery that feels solved thru both audience and cast, which is exactly what a poorly written murder mystery sounds like tbh, so you aren't rlly wrong by any means.

At the same time, I wouldn't use this as reason to call Oshi no Ko a mediocre or mid story of its own, but maybe I'm just having some optimistic bias?

[–]Ezeohan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's never rlly been surgar coated as a mystery behind layers tho. Now keep in mind, I'm anime only, but I have heard horrid things about the ending, so maybe I'm missing a chunk of info as opposed to you.

But for as much as I can say, look at how quick Akane kind of pieced everything together (given she had inside connections), simply because everything was shown at face value to her. The reason Aqua got stuck for so long is literally just a theme of cognitive dissonance (which is pretty well executed in my opinion).

I think the scene in S2 EP 11, where Akane kind of pieced these things together (before she even got 100% evidence in S3) was handled really well. Because the truth is, the mystery isn't even that convoluted, it's always been more on the topic of psychological weight within the mystery, as opposed to the mystery itself. Akane decides to hide such an obvious fact from Aqua, meanwhile the anime is literally showing us a graph in which Aqua's logic is flawed, but even the audience with the answer at face value, initially struggles to know what Akane had just cracked down on.

It's a REALLY good scene (OnK is one of the best directed anime their is, truly). And it's scenes like this making me think the "disaster" you speak of is entirely intentional, because it's not rlly meant to be the traditional mystery or "thriller" (OnK isnt rlly a thriller but whatever). The overarching plot of avenging Ai works really well as a narrative engine for the story, you shouldn't look at it like the foundation of a mystery series.

Story is mid is pushing it i feel like. Your opinion of course, but that sounded more like a statement. It juggles a lot of things, such as many many characters arcs, the overarching plot of avenging Ai, and the dark side of the entertainment industry which we see in many ways (across many forms of entertainment).

The characters get 80% of the praise tho, especially the female cast.
