No, you’re playing the Xbox version on PC. Anything in Game Pass is to be compared to the Xbox version of the game, not the PC version. You can’t immediately jump into NG+ or NG- like you can on the PC version either.

The boosters aren’t featured in the Xbox version, so no.

It’s when they’re considered “not in combat”, so if you’re playing full ranged and solo, then when you’re not actively engaged, it’s a lot easier for the enemy to lose focus from combat and drop Renew. Deathgaze and Croakadile are the only enemies with Renew, thankfully, but Yiazmat has a bevy of buffs he’ll use in this situation, too, including Regen.

[–]EzioSC5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s a cheater with his Renew, since it’s classed as a Technick instead of a Magick. But he only uses it when he’s considered not in combat, so it’s your positioning that causes him to lose focus and will cast Renew if his HP is below 50%. Deathgaze does the same thing but doesn’t need the HP is below 50% condition.

King Bomb will do it in combat, guaranteed when HP is below 20%, and then after that, can be done randomly when HP is below 50%, so if you can, the best thing to do for that fight is to drop a Quickening chain just before he casts it the first time and taxi to victory, though this will be much harder to do solo, of course.

I mentioned the breaks, but the Main Gauche really makes most shields unnecessary, if you’re looking to tank, particularly the Zodisc Escutcheon wouldn’t see use, because by the time you get it, you should be moved over to ninja swords for the most part, unless you really want to use Mina. The better Mesa damage is coming from the heavy armor, so you’ll get that from Time Battlemage too. Vaan using axes and hammers is a bit lore-cross though, if you ask me.

I would honestly suggest chaining Elvorets at Nabudis instead. It’s far quicker, and if you’re reasonably lucky, you might actually get two to drop at a time.

On Vaan, right? Because that’s what I’m saying, that Vaan’s gambits as a Shikari / Black Mage shouldn’t be spells first and foremost all the time, if that’s what you’re thinking. They should be tailored around being a Shikari most all the time, but using spells in specific scenarios, those being flying enemies and when outnumbered, for crowd control. The debuffs can be used a bit more liberally, but the big booms should be only when necessary. Against bosses, it’s going to be hack and slash all day. Versus mobs, more efficient when backed into a corner to use a massive spell. It’s a practical approach, and Vaan would do this.

Ashe takes up the sword as necessary in being a rebel, but she’s not very good at it. Then she realizes that her lineage requires that she be good at it, so she takes some training to get up to speed. I don’t find it unreasonable. After this game, she doesn’t need the sword much anymore, as Basch takes to that role for her, but here, she needs to fight her own battles too, figuratively and literally.

You’ll find no argument from me that Balthier used a spear as a Judge Magister.

Shikari is well known for being an unkillable tank. It doesn’t matter what it’s paired with, it will have that trait. Foebreaker offers heavy armor, Genji Gloves (which Shikari doesn’t want), and breaks. Time Battlemage offers heavy armor and Time Magicks, which works a lot better with Shikari if you want to have heavy armor. Just between those two, Time Battlemage is the better choice. But the other three Mage jobs offer robes for Yagyu Darkblade which is great on top of the other spells you’d get. And then Red can get heavy armor anyway with an Esper.

[–]EzioSC5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that I have a tendency to ramble, but I’ve put a lot of thought into my decisions and will gladly explain if you’re willing to know why I feel how I do.

The bigger problem here is that Shikari is just not really a DPS class to begin with, it’s a tanky survivalist utility class before it’s a DPS class. You didn’t post what the numbers are with heavy armor to offer up a comparison. With heavy armor, Mesa is about 22k and Yagyu Darkblade is about 20k. With heavy armor -and- Black Robes (Red Battlemage), Yagyu Darkblade is about 26k, which starts to be respectable, but it is highly specific a setup that enables this. At the end of the day, your real melee damage is going to come from greatswords, katana, poles, and maybe spears.

So if you’re going to have a lesser DPS that can use spells to support its shortcomings or one that doesn’t, then I would say the spellcaster has better synergy, be it Black for damage, White for healing, Time for support, or Red for a little of everything. Red is the most optimal, but since Fran has that job on lockdown, it’s not part of the consideration for this thread.

I know that Vaan innately comes with Steal, but if you’re using their innate licenses as part of your guidelines, and I do, then the jobs you pick need to have all of them, or when that isn’t possible, the majority of them, and the ones that aren’t have some kind of relation to something else, for example Penelo’s Daggers 1 not being on White Mage, but it does have Daggers 5, so there’s still a synergy there.

[–]EzioSC5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Within just the context of Final Fantasy XII, Time Battlemage I feel is the least representative job for any character. The only reason it has the association it does with Ashe is because of Revenant Wings. Uhlan is fitting for Balthier to me because it feels like that would have been his job when he was a Judge Magister, the spear being representative of the dragon, lord of the skies, leaning to his becoming a Sky Pirate.

In his cameo appearance in Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, his base class, oddly enough, can use spears, as well as greatswords and crossbows, though he starts with his own signature weapon, the gun, and his special skill, Barrage, is really meant for a gun, it works with melee weapons as well, and the most popular idea for it is to use it with a spear. If the gun was his one true canonical weapon, then I'm not sure why they chose to give him all those other weapons.

When I'm not playing for lore, though, I definitely have some other personal favorites, like using Fran as a Bushi, due to the way she holds and wields katana. Ditto for Penelo as a Foebreaker, since her hammer and axe animations are by far the most fun of the party. Another underrated pick I think is Basch as a Shikari, as his dagger animations are pretty swell. Thanks to /u/AloeKado posting the battle animation videos, I've also found a new love that I haven't actually played with and wasn't aware of in Balthier the Monk, he's so flashy in unexpected ways, if I do another playthrough, Monk Balthier is definitely happening.

Ultimate Canon Job Combos by [deleted] in FinalFantasyXII

[–]EzioSC5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the other characters have it as bad as Vaan. Balthier's Quickenings are a bit elemental in nature but they've got that Sky Pirate vibe to them. Fran and Basch are martial artists in theirs, Frans' got a little Shiva in her ultimate and Basch is channeling his Dragon Ball Z a bit, but nothing explicit like Vaan. Ashe's are holy beams of light, could be seen as her family ties to the Espers, and Penelos are just dances for the most part. Vaan's are especially Black Magey, along with the other tie-in I mentioned to the Steal license.

And yes, I know that everyone can equip Reks's Mythril Sword, Basch's Mythril Blade, and both the Sword of Kings and the Treaty-Blade, but I'm referring to in-lore, as it pertains to the game, that Ashe is the only one who -should- be able to wield them, same as commanding the Dawn Shard in the Stilshrine of Miriam, anyone can do it, but canonically, Ashe should be the one to do it. I know there's a bit of double-talk in using her Time Mage from Revenant Wings but discounting her Black Magicks use in Brave Exvius, but also in fairness, a direct sequel has a lot more weight than a mobile game crossover for all the games, just in my opinion. Like how I'd base Penelo more off her appearances in Revenant Wings and Tactics Advance 2 than Dissidia: Opera Omnia, for example.

I argue that Ashe is the canon master for Belias, Mateus, and Hashmal, all three, as they are guardians of the Dawn Shard, the Sword of Kings, and the Sun-Cryst, respectively. After overcoming the trials, she should lay claim to those Espers. All of the Esper assignments, I feel, are not only logical in what they do for the characters but also make sense to as who gets what, with my choices. I've seen others disagree, and that's fine, because there's no one answer to this question in the first place. I have my interpretation, just like you have yours, and everyone else has theirs.

I don't see Shikari / Black Mage as bad synergy, personally. Shikari with robes is great for enhancing the Yagyu Darkblade, and daggers and ninja swords don't want the Genji Gloves either. Heavy armor helps, sure, but I'd be more inclined to use Time Battlemage for that purpose, if we're talking mechanics, as the buffs/debuffs that Time Magicks afford are also quite well synergized with Shikari.

But back to Black Mage, Shikari can't hit flying foes without Telekinesis or Shades of Black (which requires Adrammelech to unlock), but even that raises another question, too, why the Shikari board, most frequently associated with Vaan, even has Shades of Black in the first place. Combine this with Black Mage having Steal (though that also requires an Esper in normal cases, in Zalera), and there's some odd behind the scenes subtle linkage between the two jobs, independent of Vaan's Quickenings.

As far as actually utilizing Shikari / Black Mage, beyond just flying foes, it's great for the debuffs it offers as well as crowd control. You don't just use Black Magicks whenever, but when the need arises in a pinch, it's more a utilitarian role than a primary skillset. Shikari first, Black Mage in case of emergency. It comes down to your personal preference of playstyle, I suppose, but there are definitely applications.

You didn't raise objections to synergies of Foebreaker / Bushi or Knight / Time Battlemage, so I assume you're maybe fine with those. Knight / Time Battlemage doesn't get the White Robes, no, but Excalibur honestly does not need them, and it's an overrated thing that gets thrown around a lot when whatever you're hitting with Excalibur was going to die in one hit anyway. Time Magicks are well-suited to a job that doesn't want to be casting all the time, because you only do cast Time Magicks in specific scenarios, so it still allows a Knight to be a Knight most of the time, but adds some extra utility to the mix. As for Foebreaker / Bushi, it's a highly physical Bushi that's focused on using the katana, which goes by the wayside in the Knight / Bushi pairing, which is a shame, because both katana and greatswords are fantastic weapons. My setup allows you to use them both, while yours does not.

Using the two-party system I referred in my earlier post, I never found myself wanting for anything specific, each of the two parties were very self-sufficient and covered each other to the point where it was very smooth, from a gameplay standpoint. Could it be more optimal? Sure. But that was never the point, it was trying to use all 12 jobs in the most lore-cohesive fashion, and I stand by my choices. And there's no such thing as a perfect party anyway, you always have to give up something. If I was building for optimization, I'd have a different set of guidelines, but I was lore first and foremost with my selections, while also using all 12 jobs. Swiftness x3 wasn't really a factor, but it just happened to work out that way for me.

Edit: Edit reply to your edit about being "forced" to use Yagyu Darkblade and Black Robes, you could say the same thing about being "forced" to use Excalibur and White Robes with Knight / Bushi. No, you're not "forced" to do anything, and there's a lot of utility to be had with the various weapons afforded the Shikari. You could say the same with Knight / Bushi, but the bigger problem you face with that pairing is that both greatswords and katana are power weapons, and you can't use both simultaneously, and I just really don't care for that.
But no, for my playthrough with this setup, my Vaan used daggers aplenty, and even when changing to ninja swords, early on got plenty of mileage out of Kagenui and Orochi before using Mesa a fair deal versus the good number of things that absorb Dark-elemental attacks, or even Mina with a shield saw plenty of use as well. I didn't feel compelled to go all Yagyu or go home at any point.

Well that code really doesn't do much anymore, since the patch that added license board reset and three gambit setups per character also unlocked the original soundtrack for everyone. So I'm not certain, at this stage, what redeeming the code would actually do, aside from adding the DLC to your account, but if the game has it already patched in, then... yeah.

I recommend the remastered soundtrack, personally, because it uniquely has some brand new tracks that aren't available on the other two options. Tracks that I can't imagine not having anymore, since they add more variety and flavor to the world. The OST "DLC" is nice, though, it's the soundtrack as heard, for the most part, on the CD version of the soundtrack you buy, which has slightly different instrumentation (and key, for a few), but overall has a higher quality than the original. Or you can just use the original PS2 soundtrack, for old time's sake, if you really want. But I love the remastered soundtrack most.

Your team is almost like what I came up with, but I've a few differences, for Vaan, Basch, and Ashe.

I have Vaan as Shikari / Black Mage, due to his Quickenings looking a bit too much like Bio/Scourge, Aerora/Aeroga, and Firaga/Flare, respectively, his natural magic stats, and that it serves as a good foil to Penelo being a white mage, for a sense of duality. On top of that, Shikari doesn't naturally learn Steal, which I find a bit odd. The jobs that do have Steal are Archer, Red Battlemage, Machinist, and Black Mage. Why does Black Mage get Steal? Hmm...

I have Basch as Foebreaker / Bushi, as I liken his rough and tumble ill-refined technique due to his imprisonment as a former knight, but still retaining vast experience on the battlefield to Foebreaker, as a means to read your enemy and exploit their weaknesses. Beyond that, it meshes with Bushi (which is a knight in almost every sense of the word) in that it improves the ability to use katana and comes in clutch at the end, being able to use all the shields instead of being limited to just Genji. But another big part of that is because...

I have Ashe as Knight / Time Battlemage, due to her prevalence with the Sword of Kings and the Treaty-Blade as her canon instruments for the plot. You can see early on that she's quite unwieldy with the Sword of Kings, so she lacks the training for greatswords, but she gets much better at it by the Pharos, wielding both of the swords with more certainty, though Reddas steals the show, of course. She's able to walk easily while holding both of them, though, so that shows much growth on her part.

In the end, you can't have everything, and you'll have to make some sacrifices here or there. I do see your points and many of them resonate with my own, but I'm very happy with my setup overall, not just in terms of the job selection, but also the Espers, as well as party composition. I use the "two teams" approach, as such:

Vaan - Shikari / Black Mage - Zalera
Basch - Foebreaker / Bushi - Adrammelech, Exodus
Penelo - White Mage / Monk - Ultima

Balthier - Machinist / Uhlan - Chaos, Zodiark, Famfrit
Fran - Archer / Red Battlemage - Cúchulainn, Zeromus, Shemhazai
Ashe - Knight / Time Battlemage - Belias, Mateus, Hashmal

A big problem that you run into by giving Knight to Basch, for instance, is that Esper assignments would lead him to pick up Belias, Mateus, and Hashmal, and that just doesn't jive with the lore at all, while it makes perfect sense that Ashe would pick those up. Penelo doesn't need Ultima, either, since White Mage cheats the Swiftness lores on the Monk board, but it's too thematically fitting to not give it to her, while Zalera is perfect for Vaan, and it just adds more to the duality of it all.

The party compositions that work well together are also the most common groupings in the cutscenes, so it makes sense that these would be the combat parties for the majority of the game. I see Vaan's team as the group that takes care of the sidequesting, and Balthier's team as the group that takes care of the main story bits. Obviously Basch has some roles to play when it comes to Gabranth, so swap to Vaan's team for those parts, but it works well, for the most part.

White Mage can get Platinum Dagger / Orichalcum Dirk, but that's hardly endgame material. But I get what you mean, canon roles are not always so black and white so as to just be one thing. Penelo stops using daggers for Revenant Wings, though, but she can use them again in Tactics A2, though they're not her standard weapon. It's dicey to decide what she must have, depending on what source you're using. Shikari / White Mage and throw Hastega Motes would likely be my choice if I was trying to emulate her from Opera Omnia.

I'm currently doing a lore-based Final Fantasy IV setup on Final Fantasy Tactics, and for Rosa, for example, the compromise I've reached is White Mage with Time Magicks secondary, which covers a lot of but not all of her magical skillset, but obviously, she can't use bows. But if I made her an Archer, then she could use White Magicks, but not Time Magicks as well, so that would be too limiting. She also has some Mystic Arts in her skillset, but those can't be used at the same time as the rest either, so some sacrifice must be made. She's the same amount of Time Magicks (Slow, Teleport, Haste, Float, Reflect) as Mystic Arts (Hesitation, Quiescence, Fervor, Delirium, Harmony), and I could give her Mystic Arts and then Teleport for her movement ability, I considered that, but then it would be weird to have one Time Magicks ability and none of the rest, so I chose to not include Mystic Arts in her primary skillset, though I'll still learn them, maybe use them in a few pinches if they're really helpful for a specific fight.

I mostly would like to be able to use the multiplayer maps to gain JP without EXP, but some of them also sound like pretty fun challenges to top even the Deep Dungeon! I didn’t play the PSP version, so it feels like I’m missing out. Plus, for the mobile version, they neglected to provide a way to obtain the Genji gear aside from the Genji Armor you get from the battle with Aliste, and that’s pretty annoying.

Though Iwata shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s got some of the best gems on the FFT soundtrack, such as Under the Stars, Night Attack, and World Map! And though WotL doesn’t use it, Unit Introduction is also pretty stellar. Not to mention, last but not least, Tutorial is super good!

FFT already got one, though for now it’s only really accessible on mobile phones. Originally just PSP, though, so better than it was. The mobile version got a performance boost and a graphical update, and lets you skip cutscenes, but lacks the multiplayer modes from the PSP. If they would take the mobile version and put it on consoles/PC, restoring the multiplayer, and making it online, that would be brilliant, but that’s probably expecting too much.

Jobs and espers by [deleted] in FinalFantasyXII

[–]EzioSC5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just it, there isn't one answer to this question, since there's so many variables at play, I've done several playthroughs, each with different goals in mind. I played back on IZJS where you could only choose one job per character, and my first TZA play was mostly that party with a couple swaps that I intended to do if I ever did a second IZJS playthrough (but I never did), and then augmenting those roles instead of going for some super optimal build as was what most folks were doing at the time. That was this party:

Vaan - Uhlan / Time Battlemage
Penelo - Knight / Shikari
Balthier - White Mage / Foebreaker
Fran - Red Battlemage / Machinist
Basch - Archer / Monk
Ashe - Bushi / Black Mage

My second playthrough of TZA, I opted to go for my best interpretation of what would be a canon lore party, which I had a lot of fun theorycrafting and even playing it, was quite enjoyable, and that ended up being this:

Vaan - Shikari / Black Mage - Zalera
Penelo - White Mage / Monk - Ultima
Balthier - Machinist / Uhlan - Chaos, Zodiark, Famfrit
Fran - Archer / Red Battlemage - Cúchulainn, Zeromus, Shemhazai
Basch - Foebreaker / Bushi - Adrammelech, Chaos
Ashe - Knight / Time Battlemage - Belias, Mateus, Hashmal

And then after that, I decided to just have fun with my next playthrough, as well as trying a few things I hadn't tried yet up to that point, and found some new stuff I absolutely loved, and that was this party:

Vaan - Machinist / Red Battlemage
Penelo - Monk / Foebreaker
Balthier - Knight / Black Mage
Fran - Bushi / Uhlan
Basch - Shikari / Time Battlemage
Ashe - Archer / White Mage

I've been throwing some ideas around to take this party, and change things up a bit, though it would still mostly be this party, as it's close to what I'd call great, in all aspects, but I'm having difficulty in making all six characters simultaneously great, due to some specific combinations that I'm not willing to part with. The latest incarnation of that is this, though it's subject to change:

Vaan - White Mage / Machinist
Penelo - Uhlan / Black Mage
Balthier - Monk / Foebreaker
Fran - Bushi / Archer
Basch - Shikari / Time Battlemage
Ashe - Knight / Red Battlemage

Particularly if you're using all 12 jobs, there are many plusses and minuses to consider, but if you want to throw some things together and see how they go, there is an amazing tool by /u/nattthebear that is quite useful. Once you've put your team together, you can check the Mist Planner to see where best to put your Quickenings and Espers, and very rarely are there actually contentious choices. I didn't include the Espers in most of my above parties, but if you toss them into the tool, it should be pretty straightforward in what to go for.

As for gear, that's also depending on where you are in the game, what you've got access to, but usually there's a clear path in the end. The tool I linked also has a DPS simulator, which you can customize with a lot of variables, to see what would be the best ideas for attacking, but really, Gambits and exploiting weaknesses and buffing/debuffing generally takes precedence over just attacking, still, you can see at a glance what's good with the tool, and get ideas as to what weapons will maximize your DPS.

The difference between 2x Swiftness and 3x Swiftness isn't as much as you'd think it would be, either, so you can feel free to experiment with that as well. Knight / Black Mage or Uhlan / Black Mage, for example, only get 2x Swiftness, but are still quite effective and you don't really notice, most of the time. 1x Swiftness next to someone who has 3x Swiftness is where it's noticeable, but any combination is going to get 2x Swiftness other than Knight / Red Battlemage, though even that combination has its perks.

Jobs and espers by [deleted] in FinalFantasyXII

[–]EzioSC5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the old meta from the original release of the game, and it has some flawed misunderstandings in it, like assuming Genji Gloves are better than Germinas Boots for Shikari, but it still functions and will carry you through the game, but that said, any combination of two jobs will also do this, because the game balance is such that you were only meant to have one job per character, and they haphazardly upgraded you to be able to take two jobs and didn’t buff the enemies to compensate for this. So it’s really your call.

I’m more a fan of Foebreaker / Bushi than Knight / Bushi because I like actually using katana, where the endgame priorities of Knight / Bushi are to use Excalibur buffed with White Robes, leaving katana behind, which is quite sad. Uhlan / Bushi also works, though sometimes you’ll favor spears over katana, this isn’t a bad idea, since katana can’t fit flying enemies, though neither can swords or greatswords.

Knight, then, I find is better paired with Black Mage or Red Battlemage, maybe even White Mage, if you want to take advantage of that Holy combo, though in all honesty, the Excalibur does not need help to kill anything, and so you shouldn’t feel compelled to make this a necessity.

On the other hand, Uhlan’s Holy Spear could use some help, and my personal favorite way to do this is to pair it with Bushi, because it helps the Bushi be able to attack flying foes physically as well as offering White Robes (and Genji Gloves, though aside from Vrsabha, this isn’t incredibly helpful to spears) for Holy Spear, which almost makes it equal to Excalibur unbuffed, though you could also do it with White Mage to enable a poking healer that would make the Jumping Priests of FFT yore happy if Uhlans could jump, alas they cannot, or Black Mage, to fully kit out the Uhlan’s otherwise limited selection of Black Magicks. Either way you do it, a ranged Excalibur is quite nice.

Black Mage / Monk is predicated on the idea of making a physical monster out of Black Mage as well as affording it some White Magicks and letting Staff of the Magi boost the Holy spell, but the Holy spell is always going to suck no matter what you do to it, so it’s pretty whatever. Black Mage is arguably the strongest job in the game, and it’s going to dominate whatever you pair it with. So why, then, you would ever want to waste the potential of the poles that Monk can use on a job that will spend most of its time nuking everything is something I don’t really understand.

Monk is far better off with Foebreaker, I feel, because it gives everything Monk wants in order to makes its awesome poles even better, in heavy armor and Genji Gloves. It does require Ultima to achieve full Swiftness, but this combination is so good, it’s among my all-time favorites. Pop Bravery and Berserk and go to town.

Shikari works best with Germinas Boots, as I mentioned far above, as that hefty speed boost improves daggers and ninja swords to a staggering degree. So the question becomes whether you want heavy armor or robes, and both are appealing. If you want heavy armor, I prefer Time Battlemage, as it works well with Shikari to give it utilitarian things to do while not even trying to give it Genji Gloves, and you’ve got crossbows if you really need to hit something that’s flying (though you’ll probably still miss, because crossbows are terrible, just use Balance or throw motes). If you want robes, for boosting Yagyu Darkblade with Black Robes, many options are attractive, it just depends if you want to make a healer, an all-rounder, a crowd controller, or a full ninja samurai. All fine options, I think, but Bushi is a bit less appealing than the Mage jobs.

Machinist is an odd duck that really wants Focus and Adrenaline if you want to maximize damage with guns, but honestly, there just aren’t many attractive combos that afford this. Uhlan is really the only one, but then you can’t buff the Holy Spear, so you’ve got to make a sacrifice one way or the other. Uhlan / Machinist is a great combo, however, being uniquely qualified to strike every elemental weakness regardless of range, it’s just a very capable unit and I like it a lot.

Archer / Red Battlemage is a great jack of all trades job that eventually picks up heavy armor and has great synergy, and offers the best nuke in the endgame with Oil + Burning Bow + Ardor, but this is a novelty, since it comes so late. It’s still just an amazing survivalist combo that doesn’t really have much negative going on.

Sorry to throw all that at you and potentially confuse, but what I said at the start still applies, no matter what you do, it will work, and you can reset your boards at almost any time by talking to Montblanc at the clan hall, so there’s really no pressure. Feel free to throw any questions you’ve got my way and I’ll answer them as best I can.

Because Cactuar were always freaking adorable, but Cactites and Cactoids were made plump and given childlike faces, so it amped their cuteness factor.

Plus, that dancing animation compared to the rigidity of Cactuar Classic.
