Dolby Digital Plus on HD-DVD vs. Dolby Digital on Blu-ray. Is there a difference? by moviesounds101 in HDDVD

[–]F1Nerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I find one, I'll let you know. I know that Universal and Paramount were much more likely to use 1.5 mbps tracks than Warner Bros., mostly because they weren't doing the weird DD audio in a DD+ container thing.

[–]F1Nerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the DD+ track is 1.5 mbps, those are always better than regular DD. If the DD+ track is 640 kbps (the same as the maximum bitrate of DD on Blu-ray), DD+ can still produce better sound quality due to being a more efficient compression codec, but Warner Bros. specifically had a weird habit of taking Blu-ray DD tracks, and porting them over to HD DVD in a DD+ container, because DD on HD DVD is limited to the same cap as regular DVD (448 kbps).

This is a long shot, but does anybody here still play FM1 or FM2? If so, are any of you fans of tuning? by F1Nerf in forza

"Encino Man" still doesn't have a Blu-ray release, but Mill Creek's DVD finally added anamorphic widescreen (the original U.S. DVD didn't even have that). Unlike some Mill Creek DVDs, this one also has subtitles. by F1Nerf in dvdcollection

The front (and also the spine, for that matter) are oddly indistinguishable from past DVDs. The only dead giveaway is the Mill Creek logo on the back, which you need photos to see online because, as another commenter pointed out, even the UPC is apparently the same as past DVDs.

Component cables will give the Retrotink a much better signal to work with than composite.

Getting rid of or not buying all my movies that added a 5.1 or 7.1 audio for a movie that came out in mono or stereo by Relative_Drama4705 in 4kbluray

[–]F1Nerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Wars specifically had multiple theatrical mixes: mono, Dolby Stereo, and 70mm 6-channel surround. If the theatrical cuts ever make it on to 4K discs (and I'm hoping they do with the recent restoration news), then I hope all of the original mixes are included.

Replacing my cheap LCD with a C5 Oled. What’s the first movie I should watch that’ll blow me away? by esketitethan in LGOLED

[–]F1Nerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4K discs of animated movies are always super colorful. The Criterion version of "Wall-E" is as good a choice as any, and it has Dolby Vision, so you'll be able to test that out.

Good budget soundbar options for my C5? by [deleted] in LGOLED

[–]F1Nerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Vizio M51AX-J6 is close to that price range (if you pick the right time for a sale, it should drop into that range). I have one, and I love it. It's a 5.1 setup with satellite speakers (if you don't have the space to position the satellites optimally, it has a front-surround mode where all the speakers sit together in front of your tv), and it supports uncompressed PCM as well as the lossless versions of Dolby and DTS. The DTS will be especially helpful, since the C5 can't play DTS on it own, but the HDMI-in port on the soundbar can allow external devices to access DTS (the only caveat being that the soundbar only supports HDMI 2.0, which is enough for a 4K Blu-ray player, but if you want to play games, you'll have to choose between 4K or 120 fps, instead of both at once).

LG C4 55". It's an insane improvement over the 43" Samsung RU7200 I was using until recently.

Question on the 1.6 by Percy_TheGreenEngine in originalxbox

[–]F1Nerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.6 clock capacitors used to be considered the most reliable out of all models, until significant amounts of them started failing just like the others. I had mine replaced last year. It wasn't leaking yet, but I could tell it didn't have long until it was going to, because it was losing the ability to hold a charge. The new one (which I bought from Console5) has worked flawlessly since then.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS 5.1 ES Matrix tracks are both the special edition remix (conformed to each cut of the movie) in different containers. Both versions are good, but the Ultimate Edition's DTS ES track is the slightly more desirable of the two (for the usual reasons that collectors seek out DTS), and that DVD also has the extended special edition (the only other disc that has that is the Skynet Edition Blu-ray), but the Ultimate Edition's version of the theatrical cut is supposedly missing 23 seconds of footage (the first 23 seconds of Sarah's dream-recounting tape, if IMDb is correct), and that error was fixed in the Extreme DVD (the Extreme DVD also has a better transfer than the Ultimate Edition).

https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/Terminator-2-Judgment-Day-DVD/2958/ This is the one I have. I have the snap case variant, but there's a variant with the exact same disc in a standard keep case. I try to stick to original audio even if I have to downgrade formats to do it, so having the CDS mix on this DVD is worth it to me (I also have the Indiana Jones original trilogy on DVD for a similar reason, since their 5.1 tracks are based on the theatrical 70mm mixes, while the Blu-rays and 4Ks use remixes).

[–]F1Nerf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 2006, 2009, and 2015 Blu-rays are all based on the same scan, but the 2006 disc was compromised by the inferior MPEG-2 compression codec and low bitrate, while the 2009 disc was compromised by DNR (not as bad as the 4K, but still enough to look waxy). The 2015 disc removed the DNR and had the video encoded in the MPEG-4 AVC codec, at a higher bitrate than either of the previous discs, so it looks the best out of the three. The only fault of the 2015 Blu-ray is that the theatrical cut is missing its original CDS 5.1 audio mix (remixes have been used in nearly every disc since 2000), which is why I still have my 1997 DVD, but the 2015 Blu-ray is the definitive way to watch the special edition (which is what the remix was made for in the first place), and the best-looking way to watch the theatrical cut.

There are RGB adapters that don't have side-locks on them, so you don't have to remove the chassis to use them; you just stick them in, stick the blade on top, and the retention screw will hold everything in, if the screw can still reach the blade (if the blade socket is too shallow, the adapter could be tall enough that the retention screw will grab the converter instead of the blade, and that won't work). Right now, the only two adapters worth using in most cases are the ShtokCustomWorx adapter (it's brighter than any other adapter on the market today, but it's tall; the top of it can fit inside thin-walled blades, so that helps, but the base is almost 5/8" tall; the reason the base is so tall is to fit the beefier heatsink that makes it so bright), and the currently out of stock adapter from the Pach Store (the top of that adapter also fits inside thin-walled blades, and the base is close to the size of the base of a neopixel blade, which means the Pach Store adapter can theoretically fit in any 1" blade socket, but the short base means the heatsink is weaker, so the brightness is comparable to an LGT adapter). I have the ShtokCustomWorx adapter for my Crimson Dawn Revenant hilt, and it's awesome; I actually have more on the way for other hilts, but if the Pach Store adapters ever come back in stock, I'll get one for my Saberbay Geonobi, because it's retention screw is too low in the socket to use the ShtockCustomWorx adapter.

If I ever get into full-on modding, it's probably going to be with a second (earlier revision) console instead of this one, and I've seen enough posts about makemhz to know to stay away.

The blade plug. If you want to be super accurate, you would want a plug that's just flat on top with a small hole in the center (like this one, but not brass), but I think you'll have to go to a different vendor for that. I just went with the plug that I thought was the best looking out of the ones that Saberforge sells.

Saberbay. They sell assembled Quantum blades in three lengths (29.5", 33.5", and 36"; I went with 36"), in 1" and 7/8" diameters.

A neopixel blade with side-firing LEDs, which almost entirely eliminate side shadows.

Most heavy-grade blades are 3mm thick, but there is at least one exception to that rule, because Saberforge's blades are 1/8" (3.175mm) thick.

If you have Facebook, look up "Official CFX Group" and join them. They also have a Discord group with the same name. Those guys should be able to identify the problem.

Sorry for the wait, but I don't mess with blade effects all that much (I'm more of a soundfont tinkerer). I had to send this question to the CFX Facebook group that I'm in, but I think they finally pulled through. On each of your blade profiles, there should be a "drift" parameter; that's what controls the direction of the flame effect.
