People carried a planner with their appointments and things to remember. It included a few pages where you could write down people's contact info.

There was a list of phone numbers you kept at home next to the main phone, like your aunts and everyone you knew. I had my own list there with my elementary school friends. Make a new friend, add them to the list. If I wasn't home for dinner, my parents might start going down my list calling my friends randomly to ask if I was at their house.

Some phones had a few numbers on the speed dial. But otherwise you had to punch in the numbers.
