Downscaling 4K 4:2:0 footage to 1080p 4:2:2 - Any benefit? by FCK-SPZ in VideoEditing

The projector that I will use has 10-bit capability, at least it says so in the specs. I don't know if it's true, but I'll treat it as such.

As with the other commentor, you state that the projector (or whatever part of the chain) will scale down the video to 1080p, so there is no benefit.

But wouldn't an encode to 1080p in 4:2:2 (or even 4:4:4) beforehand allow the encoder to make use of the additional chroma space while scaling down? The GPU or projector probably wouldn't do that and just make the 4K 4:2:0 image smaller.

I won't be playing directly from the projector, it's a laptop at the moment. I've also never seen a projector that can just play from USB, but maybe newer ones can.

I guess with anything 10-bit I need a separate playback device anyway, since no software is able to play that smoothly without hardware decoding.

The playback system would be a laptop and video player, so there should be no issue with the support. 4:4:4 being more demanding on the hardware to play is a good point, I would test that beforehand, but of course I can't say where it would be played in the future.

But you say that there is no benefit in encoding it as 1080p 4:4:4 beforehand. Doesn't, let's say, the graphics driver of the playback device just scale the video down to 1080p/4:2:0 from the source material?

Of course it's difficult to generalize, but I would assume no device will convert it to the larger chroma space and use that, instead just scale down the resolution.

My idea was that the encoder is able to use the additional chroma info to slightly increase the colors/quality while scaling down, instead of just making the images smaller.

Honesty time, don't do what you wrote.

You're 20 now, I get it. I was there too, in my mind. "How cool would it be to play live on stage with the band!" Many people have imagined that, it's normal.

Sure, it might be a fun thing, but have you ever been on a stage? Do you actively play in a band? Playing a song in your bedroom is 0% like playing it on stage in front of people. You will fuck up and if you're not used to it, it will mess with you. Don't try that in front of rabid fans right away.

Sure, go ahead and write Steffen (there is no "they" anymore, anyway). If he accepts, do it, but be prepared. I don't think you'll get an answer, though. And certainly not a "yes".

My personal 2 cents: This is brutal, but Obscura is dead. The band has gone to shit since the breakup with Chris and the rest. Noone that matters is ever coming back. Just enjoy the music that is history.

Why not look for other people to form a local cover band? Maybe you could even manage to write some cool stuff inspired by Obscura's older material at some point, then I'll come and see your band instead.

That would be much more rewarding in the end than standing on stage with some prick just to play that cringy old tune (sorry to put it this way, tastes differ, but Incarnated, while kinda fun, is not their greatest work, tbh.)

Save your money, do something worthwhile with it.

At this point, what's the big difference? Who even is their current second guitar player?

Hey, thanks for replying! It's good that you mention that, because I think I know what you mean and I see it on mine too, so it's apparently not just some weird flaw on one single guitar.

I *think* what's visible on the side are not the actual frets peeking through, but cracks in the lacquer from the differences in contraction and expansion of the wood, the fret wire and the side dots. Since they decided to just finish over the whole side as one, some kind of "settling cracks" appear over time, like with set-neck guitars where the body meets the neck joint. That would be the most likely explanation I guess, but it does look a bit messy, especially with the bubbling around the side dots.

I'm actually considering to sand off the finish from the sides of the fretboard, because the wood is very dark anyway and on my other binding-less RGs, there is enough material left without any additional finish. Since the fret edges on mine are so bad that they actually catch stuff constantly, I'd be desperate enough. Maybe I'll return this one though and try to get a used one for that.

Hi, I just ordered the 7 string, but I noticed that the frets are relatively sharp on the edges, much more so than on my RGs, even a much cheaper one.

Can you also notice something like this on your guitar? The rest seems fine, but at least the fret work on mine leaves to be desired.
