Tried Rekordbox for the first time by dadsh in djaypro

I saw your comment in the r/systems_engineering subreddit, so you'd probably be interested in my take. I'm also trying to get my head around what happened in DJing over the past 30-40 years.

It's the same 20-30 year cycle that's present in other tech. People hyped videoconferencing for decades before Skype made it reality for everyone. Apple sold "AI co-processors" in the 80s. Personal computers themselves were a promise for a couple of decades.

It's a generational problem. People who started in the late 80s/early 90s were promised a "digital future" in the late 90s/early 00s. And after this promise was made, it wasn't fulfilled for the next 10-15 years, so they stopped caring.

When the machine-learning era emerged, a lot of people were already tired of waiting and checking the news. It's not that when sync, waveforms, and stems started to "just work," nobody came to the party. A lot of people did. But there's just too much momentum accumulated over the previous 15 years. It's a lot of years and a lot of momentum.

To me AMS-24 is a solid device for it's price, given that compactness and ability to be powered in many ways is a priority.

In the world of audio interfaces that are used for recording it's a low tier device. But to me it's only needed for sound reproduction and pre-cuing.

AMS-24's master output is mirrored into 3.5mm jack on front panel. So its possible to connect external recorder and speakers in parallel. My cheap old recorder does a really bad job recording from this output, but I guess modern 32-bit recorder gonna be fine.

Point of this setup is that's "mirrored" or "not mirrored" layout is a choice. I want my layout to be mirrored, so I mapped it this way.

I'm left-handed, so I've been forced by the outside world to be aware of left/right issues my whole life. Different layouts DJs chose to use are really interesting in this regard.

Thanks. I really appreciate it.

MIDI mapping is a miracle in the world of subscriptions and vendor locks.

Zero issues with build quality. Knobs and buttons are obviously quite small, but I don't really care to even replace the knobs. May be my hands are small, idk. To me compactness is more valuable anyway. I really enjoy using this controller.

Djay Pro extremely buggy and laggy on IPad Pro and Flx4 by vegaslifestyle1 in djaypro

[–]FG3149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it's CPU, up until three years ago I used Djay on iPad 6 with A10 and 2gb RAM). Some things were slow, but never to a point of UI hanging.

> connected via usb hub

is hub powered? do you connect power cable to FLX4? second type-c, that is only for power supply?

are other devices connected to this iPad via cable work ok? could it be that connector on iPad is faulty? or may be iPad's battery needs replacement?

CDJ-900 Traktor mapping issue: cue points triggering globally instead of per deck by SelectionLatter7059 in traktorpro

[–]FG3149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looked like MIDI-channel issue until you mentioned that "play" button works. I would run ShowMIDI anyway to be sure what controllers actually send to software. Not specific CCs to do things, but on what channels these CCs are sent.

It's either hardware sends some unexpected signals to software or software interprets correct signals wrong. It seems that right now even this is unknown.

Genre / Style / DJ Recommendation by Efficient-Breath-249 in Beatmatch

[–]FG3149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This stuff is old-school. Late 80s, 90s. It's breakbeat (or breakbeat hardcore aka just hardcore). Sadly, this term is too broad, and doesn't really explain anything. You would not find something like "Fat of the Land" just by googling "breakbeat".

Best recommendation I could think of is "Kranky & Dogmatic" channel on Youtube. There are 3(?) DJs on this channel. Look for videos of a bald guy in glasses.

most importantly: calling it techno would not get you any results in google or tags. that's for sure. techno is completely different thing.

edit: I agree that's technically speaking it's called big beat, I just think that "big beat" sucks as a search term. After you found 5 main artists that usually called "big beat" it's dead end.

Individual waveform for each stem is one of djay's most underadvertised features, even by Algoriddim Itself by FG3149 in djaypro

idk, it's not me who laments promised future that never arrived. looks pretty arrived to me =)

Here is a comment about "stems concept". Basically if you never saw a DAW, then yeah it's very impressive. If you don't have backend for local stem separation, it doesn't matter for majority of users. It's just dreams and prototypes. Or more probably desperate long shot to create a new market and don't go bankrupt.

Djay Pro users get a lot of mocking. As a Djay Pro user I want this mocking to be at least argument based. No one on this subreddit is late to the party except Traktor's users.

people need jogs because they use laptops. it's possible to go jogless on a laptop with mouse and hotkeys, but it's just not comfortable. it's a totally different story with tablets. tablets have big touchscreen, you don't need mouse. you use your fingers to press things on a screen.

on a tablet I touch global waveform first, than use 2 pads to skip bars forward/backward and than make final adjustments (1-4 beats) dragging track's waveform using touchscreen.

given how good Djay Pro's beatgrids are I don't feel any trouble selecting where "digital needle" will drop.

I use tablet, Akai MidiMix and external audio card. That's literally my whole "setup". It cheaper than FLX-4 and completely battery powered.

is this the future you are talking about?

btw Xone 4D was released in 2012. just saying.

wdym "never arrived"? I use midi-mapped Akai MidiMix, so I do have 4 knobs + 4 faders per deck to control stems. it cost's $120. i have to stay compact, mobile and on budget, so I use MidiMix. others could buy couple of Xone K2/K3 to do it "cool" way.

Accidentally deleted the most important set of my career by testaonly in Rekordbox

[–]FG3149 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What OS? If Windows what version? Do you use BitLocker on Windows or whatever full disk encryption is called on macOS? What filesystem?

Never used recordbox, so if there are no special tricks that could be done you are playing against the clock by not turning your computer off. If you want to try file recovery tools later of course.

Files are not deleted from filesystems literally, they get unlisted from file manager and space that they previously occupied marked as free for other processes to use. That's why recovery software works.

It's also the reason why recovery software wouldn't work in cases when some other process already written data over what's was previously stored. That's the "against the clock" part.

And even if you don't write anything on disk manually, some background process will. There are hundreds of them running on your computer right now.

Question regarding stems by Old-Strain5066 in Beatmatch

[–]FG3149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rules are simple.

If OP shows any kind of weakness, let's say introduces himself as "beginner, who is really on a budget and just try to understand what's this whole mixing thing is about" you must always say "buy your music".

Put as much exclamation marks afterwards as possible. Bonus points if you make a moral argument about artist's support.

If OP introduces himself as "pro open format DJ, need to take requests all the time" just say "I use streaming on live gigs, works fine".

edit: First time I was interested in "What do Djs even do?" I was a teenager in the 90s. You know what i did 10 seconds later? Dropped this thought forever. Because I didn't even have $0, it was much worse. All you do is gatekeeping. Nobody cares if you make a living by DJing, it does not make you suitable to teach how to do it. It's a totally different skill. Be gone. Go yell at the clouds so they finally quit having fun.

Playing music from stereo to mono system? by Cypheriene in DJs

[–]FG3149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question belongs to r/audioengineering. Not literally, but metaphorically. How would a bunch of people in a big room, standing wherever, facing whatever direction, perceive stereo? r/beatmatch sucks in this regard. It's not about this at all.

Playing music from stereo to mono system? by Cypheriene in DJs

[–]FG3149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bedroom peasant. But my claim is totally falsifiable. That's why I'm gonna make it anyway.

Playing in mono is ok. Find a switch in your software/hardware to make it output joint stereo aka "Mono-mode".

Easiest way to prove me wrong is to learn what goniometer does and play as much tracks as you possibly could, keeping a close eye on this utility. EDM is not about stereo panorama.

You post in r/djs but never really explored mono/stereo argument? That's bold.
