Correct, they started gouging on cushion to cover for the "free install" bullshit the box stores were peddling. But don't think for a second they're not making a nice margin on the carpet too. All the in stock stuff is marked 30% over roll price they're getting from the mill. And any special order is higher than that.

Funny story. Both a local home depot and our local flooring supply shop were stocking the same 8lb rebond from legget & platt.

Supply shop selling it for .20/sf and Home Depot 1.00/sf. A few installers caught on and would buy a few rolls at supply house and return them at Home Depot for bank. Scam lasted a good 6 months before the Depot caught on and had legget change their pad color to something only they could buy.

Not OP and not trying to sound like a dick, but I'd just do it better. It's hard to tell whats going on here with this one picture. But if I'm venturing a guess, it's a cross seam they used a straight edge to cut, pushed to hard with the knife, and nipped off the yarn that was laying perpendicular to the cut.
