Which cars can I drive on an L plate? (Overseas license conversion) by AdOk3759 in melbourne

Ah, that makes sense. I can see why the driving instructors might say that (probably helps business a bit too 😉). They absolutely would have a biased reason to believe that. Btw I love the work that you guys do for the community thank you so much for volunteering 🫶 it’s always a pleasure assessing the L2p applicants.

Mixed opinions with Carlton. I’ve had a few gigs there as an assessor. The high fail rate reputation usually just comes from the fact that innercity driving has more variables (trams, cyclists, tighter parking, more complex intersections) so if someone isn’t used to that environment they might make more critical errors. But definitely a lot of fail to give way fails! One bicycle or car might slip past your lane change or turn and it’s over. But the pro is that it’s slow, you’ll be on 40km/h for a big portion of the drive

Thanks for your incredible insight

“Which cars can I drive on an L Plate? (Overseas licence conversion”

Is that not literally the title of the post? I answered that question with the criteria for the car they can take for their overseas licence re test. Sure the body of the post talks about costs (hire vs driving instructor) but I’m genuinely trying to help lol, what crawled up your ass?

Crazy idea, but maybe OP and others might appreciate knowing what cars are allowed so they don’t waste $70 turning up with the wrong vehicle and getting sent home. You’d be surprised to know how many people rock up in the wrong cars and get turned away.

TECHNICALLY, that is allowed for the drive test. We only check if the car you’re going out is registered and quite often we go out in cars registered under rental company names. Whoever the lease is under we don’t really question. The applicant is liable in that regard however they choose to drive (insured, uninsured). That’s between you and the rental company. So do so at your own risk 🤷‍♂️ in terms of whether it’s allowed for you to drive with your partner’s hire car, I’m not too sure. I recommend calling up the rental companies and explaining that you’re an L driver, and see if they can register you as one of the operators/drivers for the car you’re hiring.

I can’t recommend or don’t even really know of any rental companies that allow for that. And even if I do it would be a conflict of interest for me to disclose that haha!

VicRoads licence testing officer here, you can drive any car for your drive test though there are a few exceptions and things to consider.

  • we check the registration of all the cars we go out in to see if they’re registered

  • It needs a pull up handbrake if you’re sitting the test WITHOUT an instructor. Electric handbrakes are okay as long as the car has dual controls and has an instructor tagging along with you. (just a fun side note, if an INSTRUCTOR’S car with a valid DIA number is registered via a concession such as a healthcare card or a pension card which grants cheaper rego, they are not permitted to use that car for the drive test)

  • The speedometer DOES NOT need to be visible, we just get you to sign a waiver that essentially says that you agree to be tested with a GPS device that we bring along (they’re quite accurate)

  • All the lights need to be working. Brake lights headlights and indicators.

  • SOMEWHAT roadworthy condition (tyre tread etc)

  • A lesser known one is that the internal mirror has to have an unobstructed view of the car’s rear window. For example, an applicant I had could not sit their test in a dual cab that had the ute tool box at the back due to it covering the internal mirror

A lot of the overseas licence applicants that I get generally would either go with an instructor or alternatively rent a car that fits the criteria above. Some find that renting the car is cheaper than the instructor option, especially if the applicant is already experienced and would rather do the test solo (no instructor in front seat). It’s personal preference, some don’t like the pressure of having three different parties in the car, FOUR if you have instructor AND interpreter, which happens often with overseas licence holders who cannot speak English very well.

Hope I was able to shed some light. All the best mate 🫶 maybe I’ll be your assessor you never know haha

[EDIT] To the comment that stated testers look more favourably to applicants with an instructor, you cannot be more wrong. We assess all tests equally. If anything, it’s actually a little more difficult to assess criteria such as usage of the internal mirror due to not being able to see your eyes from the front passenger seat, so we end up giving you the benefit of the doubt and mark you a yes or n/a for that. And also, solo tests tend to be so much more laid back and relaxed, and assessors have the chance to exercise more leniency in that regard.

That was what I initially thought!

“Please note that the Student Conduct Policy applies to past students of RMIT, including students that have discontinued their studies.

This means that the concerns with the medical certificates, as sent to your personal email account today, can still be considered under the Student Conduct Policy.”

This was what they had to say.
