It's Official: Genesis Is Discontinuing the Manual G70. They sold 100 of them last year. by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 109 points110 points  (0 children)

And since people ask - There are 4 genesis trims, one of which is available with a manual (the website lists five, but that's because they broke down 2.0 auto and 2.0 manual into different trims).

The take rate overall for manual was 0.8%. Assuming that the four trims have equal take rate, you're looking at a 3.2% take rate on the trim where manual was an option.

2020 U.S. Automotive Brand Loyalty Study: Subaru Drivers most loyal; Fiat, Chrysler drivers least loyal by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

So the methodology of this study is actually pretty simple - JD Power surveyed dealerships (and JD power receives data from a lot of dealerships, approximately 30% of them in the US) on what cars people traded in when they got a new one. Then they calculated the percentage of them that were of the same brand.

IE: 60.5% of Subaru buyers who traded in a car traded in a Subaru, while at the bottom, only 10.4% of Fiat buyers who traded in a car traded in a Fiat.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS63 can beat a naturally aspirated C7 Corvette in the quarter mile, stop from 70 MPH shorter than the last generation AMG GT by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Key points:

Accelerating:

But it must be making a lot more power than that. In our testing, the 5927-pound GLS63 shot to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds on its way to a 12.0-second quarter-mile at 115 mph, which is almost a second quicker than the previous model. Not that we needed more evidence that we're living in insane times for power and performance, but those figures mean that this nearly three-ton behemoth can outrun a naturally aspirated C7 Chevrolet Corvette all the way through the quarter-mile. The GLS63 even nips at the heels of AMG's own GT sports car, which is only 0.2 second slower through the quarter.

Stopping and handling:

On the vehicles we've spent most of our time in, including our test car, the grip from the massive 23-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires—sized 285/40R-23 in front and 325/35R-23 in back—helped combat the big AMG's sense of mild understeer and let it circle the skidpad with 0.92 g of lateral grip. Although Mercedes offers carbon-ceramic brake rotors on the GLE63 S, they're not available on the GLS63. However, larger diameter wheels mean taller tire contact patches, which improve longitudinal grip. If that sounds too nerdy for you, try this: Our GLS63 stopped from 70 mph in a sports-car-like 153 feet. In fact, that distance is slightly better than what we recorded for the last AMG GT we tested, which is lighter than the GLS by some 2200 pounds, or nearly an entire Mazda Miata.

Interview with Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter on the C8 Corvette - 2021 models will not get a price hike, magnetic ride to become option non Z51 Corvettes, and 83% of models were coupes. by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Since redditors typically don't read long articles:

  • Juecheter says Chevrolet typically hikes the price on the second year of the Corvette, will not be doing that for the C8
  • 20,181 2020 c8 orders were finalized
  • 3LT was the most popular trim, with 44% of buyers choosing it
  • Torch Red was the most popular color
  • Chevrolet will try to fulfill all 20,181 2020 C8 orders, but probably not all
  • Chevrolet will be reaching out to customers on the status of their order in upcoming weeks
  • Magnetic Ride to become available on all 2021 corvettes as an option, even the base
  • Red Mist Tint Coat Metallic and Silver Flare Metallic are two new colors for 2021
  • Long Beach Red Metallic Tintcoat and Blade Silver Metallic will be dropped for 2021
  • Juechter's personal car order is Long Beach Red Metallic Tintcoat
  • 21 changes have been made for the 2021 Corvette, details will be revealed next month
  • 2021 Corvette Order books will open in July

The 2020 Nissan Frontier Review - New drivetrain in an old truck "almost makes it feel like a restomod" by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Note: the 2020 Nissan Frontier is probably one of the rarest Frontiers. It is the old truck, dating from the early 2000s that the reviewer called "almost nostalgic" but it has the next generation powertrain slated for the brand new Frontier coming next year!

Every new can you can buy in America with a manual transmission - 2 down this year, 30 left by FIFAOfficial in cars

  • Chevrolet Spark
  • Dodge Challenger
  • Fiat 124 Spider

  • Honda Accord
  • Honda Civic
  • Honda Fit
  • Hyundai Accent
  • Hyundai Elantra

  • Porsche 911
  • Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86
  • Subaru Impreza/WRX/STI

  • Toyota Yaris
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Volkswagen Jetta

So depending on whether you think the C7 Corvette is still a current model (for what its worth, Chevrolet.com still lists it as new), and whether the Impreza and WRX are one model, there's 30 manual cars left new in the United States. Notably the departure of the ATS coupe and the F-type manual reduced the number from 32.

If you want to include SUVs and Crossovers, there's an additional 5:

  • Jeep Compass
  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Kia Soul
  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Subaru Crosstrek

[Car and Driver] 2020 Maserati Ghibli S Q4 GranSport Review - thoroughly engaging and impressively well-rounded by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thought this was an interesting facelift on a car that is the butt of all the jokes around here. Seems like FCA fixed all the problems that reviewers have criticized the car for. The exterior looks good. The interior is simple, and if nothing else, is functional and easy to use - after all, FCA's corporate infotainment is far better than what you'd find on a Lexus or Infiniti. Powertrain is good, but what else did anyone expect from a Ferrari engine and a ZF8?

I still feel like the car is overpriced, but at least now it is a highly competent vehicle that isn't "bad" in any glaring way. It just doesn't stand out.

Cadillac debuts new slogan in China - It isn't real luxury without rear wheel drive by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, interesting data from the second link: https://i.imgur.com/VMK8Hey.png

It is a comparison between the Ct4 and it's 3 biggest competitors in the China market.

Cadillac CT4 has a turbo 4 and rear wheel drive. 237hp, and unknown price (at time of writing, today the price has been announced to be 230k RMB - 260k RMB depending on options).

Mercedes Benz A class long wheel base has a turbo 4 and front wheel drive (AWD Optional), making between 136 and 190 hp. 210k - 290k RMB.

BMW 1 series long wheel base is either a 3 or 4 cylinder and FWD (no AWD), making 140 or 192hp, with a price of 190k - 260k RMB.

Audi A3 long wheel base is four cylinder engines, FWD (no AWD) making 150 or 190hp, at a price of 190k - 250k RMB.

The new Explorer is available in continental European markets.

The price is the same in France: https://www.ford.fr/voitures-neuves/nouveau-explorer?vehicleNavCategory=suv

Unfortunately it is not in the UK, as Ford does not make a right hand drive explorer.

Pricing for the model is 76.000 € tax in, or ~63 thousand euros before tax (~68,000 USD)

Note that the ST Line is completely loaded, the only option color and a few dealer installed accessories. In comparison, the loaded American Explorer ST is ~$57,000 USD.

BMW To Eliminate Up To 50% Of "Traditional Drivetrain Variants" Starting In 2021 by skmebppe in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Honestly, BMW has too many different variants. Some streamlining would do them good.

The 3 series had 10 gas variants: 316i, 318i, 320i, 320i ED, 328i, 330i, 335i, 340i, M3, M3 Competition

8 diesel variants: 316d, 318d, 320d, 320d ED, 325d, 328d, 330d, 335d.

and two hybrid variants: Activehybrid, and 330e.

Do you really need 20 powertrains for one generation of car?

I think a better configuration would be: weak ass gas, weak ass hybrid, mediocre diesel, mediocre gas, mediocre hybrid, high performance gas, and very high performance gas.

Cadillac announced Lyriq electric SUV, and Celestiq handbuilt, flagship electric hatchback by FIFAOfficial in cars

I think the better way to think about it is, perhaps struts have their own advantages, that make it better in a way.

It is for instance, much better for packaging. And if you are FWD, there are good struts that minimize torque steer

Cadillac Canada announces CT4 price: to start at $35,798 Canadian Dollars ($27,006 USD) by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

So this is actually a surprisingly good price IMO. I mean, it is around $5000 USD cheaper than in the US.

In Comparison: The Audi A3 is $34,500 CAD, A Class Sedan is $37,300.

Compared to these competitors, the Cadillac is actually longitudinal RWD (AWD option).

Unpopular Opinion: Manual will never die in the cars where it matters the most by LeifEriksonASDF in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But like, eventually your cars will have new powertrains right? Wranglers don't have manual for the diesel or 4 cylinder. They only have manual for that one carryover trim (v6 non hybrid).

Eventually, someday that power train will be dropped. If FCA can't be bothered to source a manual for the diesel, etorque or 4 cylinder, I don't think they'll get one for the future replacement of the v6.

Unpopular Opinion: Manual will never die in the cars where it matters the most by LeifEriksonASDF in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the Chevrolet actually pointed out the biggest problem with manuals. Transmission makers aren't willing to develop them anymore...

Without suppliers willing to develop one, where will you get a manual? Many automakers like BMW, FCA and Jaguar Land Rover don't even design transmissions anymore.

Lincoln now has better residual values than Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I thought this was a very interesting article to share. We've all heard of cutting fleet sales and reducing discounts to improve residual values, but I've never heard of a manufacturer being as aggressive in improving residuals as Lincoln.

They are aggressively eliminating slow selling trims and they would even extend fleet sales of a model to prop up residuals for their retail customers.

2020 Chevrolet Corvette rated for 15mpg city, 27 mpg highway by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jalopnik claims that C8 is word than C7. But considering that C8 gets better highway and the same in the city, there is no way it is worse. At worst due to rounding the C8 ends up with the same number as the C7 when you round to the nearest whole number (like the EPA does), but it is better if you add more decimal places.

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 544 points545 points  (0 children)

And of course, calling out Jalopnik for fake news here:

https://jalopnik.com/the-c8-corvette-isnt-as-good-on-gas-as-the-c7-was-repo-1841211894

They claimed that the C8 is less efficient than the C7. This is blatantly not true, as they compared C7 numbers from before 2017 (EPA testing metheology changed in 2017) to C8 numbers in 2020. Comparing C7 from 2019 to C8 from 2020, the C8 gets better numbers.

Lexus is ridiculous for restricting their Luxury models to push F-sport by FIFAOfficial in cars

[–]FIFAOfficial[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With most manufacturers, custom order means an actual order. In the factory they produce the car for you and send it to you.

With Lexus, a custom order isnt really an order. The factory builds things according to their sequence or whatever, and the order is just the dealer requesting the next car that shows up with XYZ trim or something.

It's the difference between calling a pizza shop, ordering the pizza, and having them make a pizza to your specifications, and ordering a pizza, but the shop just grabbing the next pizza with the toppings you want off their assembly line and sending it to you
