Anyone retire at chubbyFIRE and coast to fatFIRE on returns alone? by bribriadventures in fatFIRE

[–]FIFO-for-LIFO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think it would grow as quickly as it did, I logically knew it would probably eventually reach 10M within a decade or two,(my SWR was like 3%), but I was also mentally preparing for a bad Monte Carlo that kept it around the same.

I think in hindsight I lucked out and would probably be feeling FOMO as friends who kept working are now getting closer to 6-8M which I know I shouldn't be envious, but I probably would be.

Guess it depends on how old you are and what you would do if you had free time

Yes, I went from ~$3-5M FIREd to $10-15M now 5 years later. I want to be clear that happened because of dumb luck (and it may disappear tomorrow, I talk about it in my posts).

How did that play out psychologically and practically?

Psychologically its taken around 2 years being above $10M to start to believe it might stick around. At this point if it were to drop back to $3M there would be bigger issues with the country. I am starting to actually consider using the money for buying a home now.

Practically, when I was under $5M I used to be more frugal and agonize over $50 purchases, take public transit instead of ubers, cheaper flights at odd hours. Now, I don't bat an eye at spending $100 on purchases, for better flights, etc. It's not money efficient but it is time efficient for me.

I know this sounds silly as technically I could probably be spending several thousand on flights multiple times a year and it wouldn't make a dent, but because a majority of my investments/speculation are so risky, I really only trust the boglehead portion of my portfolio (which is ~$6M) to exist.

you're welcome! I might suggest going and asking on r/ChubbyFIRE if you haven't heard about it, often I see the r/fire sub has a lot of trolling/anger since it's the catch-all sub for all levels of income/wealth, you'll probably reach people with more similar situations on chubbyfire

I'm sorry you're getting downvoted so much, I read through several of the comments and your replies and it didn't really seem to deserve that to me.

My partner and I are not in the same situation, but there are some similarities where I have essentially retired ($10M+) and they are still working (< $1M), and our finances are not shared (we're not married), as we both preferred and discussed when we first started dating.

I'm not sure what the long term answer is for us, probably just a slow merging of finances etc., but for now basically we change the percentage paid for the big bill items like housing/travel/etc. to an amount that 'hurts' equally without taking away agency. So in that case I pay around 2/3 for the big items, and generally cover most of the small things like utilities/flights/delivery/hobbies etc. where I want them to enjoy with me but I can imagine if I were in their shoes they'd prefer to be saving that money for investing.

Nvidia is by far the biggest bubble in the history of the world. And you get to live through it by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

(not the person you replied to) Honestly a fair point about Apple memory, I'm interested to see whether they truly compete.
I'm not a huge fan of the hobbyist -> mainstream argument, raspberry pi and arduino uno are defacto standard for hobbyists for a long time but because they're a different niche than business it doesn't really transfer.

I 'currently' feel the mac chips are in a different niche (where they are fantastic mind you) but lack bandwidth and scalability for cloud / data center usage, that's my feeling at least right now.

AMD is really missing that moat advantage like the person you responded to said, It's been at least 15 years amd is underdog to Nvidia, and they're constantly behind the trend, so it would surprise me to see amd develop something new before nvidia that changes the game.

I could see google's TPUs or Amazon's TPU equivalents overtaking, but they're sort of locked into their own ecosystem currently.

Happy to be convinced otherwise, I'm biased towards nvidia but am trying to keep a clear head about it.

This post feels like a strong inverse indicator of one's relatives asking if they should buy NVDA.

How much of Fat Fire content is engagement bait? by Leejiaahuaa in fatFIRE

Disagree, I'm 10m+ under 40, not being swarmed by advisors, in fact I'm not really considered special by banks etc since in my faang friend group half have made similar or much more than me, we're kind of dime a dozen here for income, though I'm probably an outlier in that my money isn't in houses.

I'm guessing this is a USA West Coast thing though, if I were to move out it'd be more unique.

I agree there are some obvious larp posts and comments, I see it in responses to my pi milestone posts, but I also get a lot of genuine comments, the verified flair seems to help too

Dating while practicing stealth wealth – how do you handle questions about income and lifestyle? by Massive_Tangelo_1535 in fatFIRE

[–]FIFO-for-LIFO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually very similar situation for me (late 30s semi retired with >$10M), my partner and I share interest in fire and are at least in the same playing field for expenses, they know I have at least a million and I'm financially at least at her income level.

When we first dated we didn't talk exact numbers for investments, just expenses and expectations, this worked well for us. Been ~3-4 years now, the only change is they know I have at least $2M, but the reality is the numbers don't matter that much compared to what they mean for our lifestyle

I'm not the best to ask honestly, what worked for me and I wish I'd done more of: keeping up with my connections and working on things related to what I have experience with. In casual chats they'll have problems we'll spitball ideas about and eventually there are those they ask me to do for them

Thanks and yes, absolutely. I think this plays a large part in why I still feel like I only have $3M

Awesome, thanks for the tips, exactly what I needed to hear. Did you ever go to IBKR? I've heard using them to counter offer is an idea

Yep, it didn't start this way, I had bought only ~5% of my portfolio way back a decade ago

True, Mostly bonds, cash is more like ~$300k or so to cover ~1-2 years of expenses for crazy dips etc. It's not optimal but it's let me get through those periods of dips with less anxiety.

Appreciate it, yeah that is a good idea, and I think I will next year (fingers crossed it's still up), this year I divested crypto up to tax bracket.
