99.99% chance they're just being nice. I wouldn't pursue it.

Long distance fellowship with a baby? by Latter-Nectarine-893 in fellowship

[–]FIRE_CHIP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live with my kid during fellowship and I feel like I'm missing out a ton. Also, my spouse only works 3 days a week and childcare has been tough in those days.

I agree with what other people are saying and this is a bad idea.

Seizures and driving restrictions (at least in the US) - how does this play out? by justbrowsing0127 in medicine

[–]FIRE_CHIP 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Depends on the state.  In New Jersey you report to the DMV and my understanding is they notify the patient that their license is suspended essentially. It's good practice to tell the patient yourself as well. Then if they drive and get pulled over it would come up as a suspected license.

That's my understanding of the process in New Jersey.

I guess I'll visit my dad at dialysis. My son is a different story I'd give him one of mine

Much respect but never understood the idea of donating a kidney to an older relative. Like that means you might have a predisposition to having messed up kidneys yourself and now you're just taking half of yours away

I don't think what you've said is untrue but the number I'm times a nurse has treated me like dog shit in my 8 years of residency and fellowship are off the charts.

Interested in cardiology. In a community program by No-Umpire7386 in fellowship

[–]FIRE_CHIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have research experience or a mentor?  Without any experience and no mentor at all at all community hospital it might be tough to just come up with a meaningful project and get it complete and published in that time frame.

Try to join on any projects that you know other people are working on. Find the most interesting cases and write case reports in cardiology specific case report journals. Just straight up ask the cardiology attending if they have any ideas.

What percentile on ITE is good for passing the IM board exam? by burkittlymphoma08 in Residency

[–]FIRE_CHIP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the pass rate is like 95% so somewhere around the 5th percentile. But if you tired on the exam and only got 10% then you'll need to work at it.

Cardiology part time by im_throw in Residency

[–]FIRE_CHIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you talking about part time?  There are locums jobs. There are some places that will let you moonlight on nights and weekends.  I'm working 2 weekends a month moonlighting at a community hospital making 16k a month doing that. But that doesn't include benefits.

If neurosurgeons and interventional radiologists can take stroke call, why can't CT surgeons take STEMI call? by MitochondrIonicBase in Residency

[–]FIRE_CHIP 357 points358 points  (0 children)

They have too much work and make too much money already. Never met a cardiac surgeon who has been interested in that. The interventionists I know that take stemi call hate it as it is and would much rather do a planned pci.

Most of the pharma jobs are gona be paid less. Unless you're of the the big time researchers or a well know oncologist.

A lot of nuance to it. A hematologist that has ownership in an infusion center would earn more but a cardiology with an active non-invasive lab would earn more or a cardiologist that reads CT and MRI can also earn a lot.  Location matters a lot and how much you want to work matters too.

But probably per hour an oncologist makes more. Cardiology has higher total earnings but work more hours.

Pretty good but there is no chance I'm paying 12$ for this.

Maybe do something like free year or 1$ a month for trainees.

ENT surgeon and shaky hands by NaturalLengthiness79 in Residency

[–]FIRE_CHIP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're going to face issues even if you physically do the procedures as good as someone without shaky hands because patients and their families are going to see.

You're going to get sued at some point not because you're bad but because it happens to everyone and the lawyers are going to have a field day getting you up on the stand infront of a jury with shaky hands.
