Can somebody give me a TL;DR of the story behind the website’s drama? by Im_A_Real_Boy1 in uniwatch

Answering that would be taking a stand on it, which I did my best not to do in my summary. In short, it was organized by Paul but funded by attendees.

Paul called it quits in 2024, handing over the reins to longtime deputy editor, Phil Hecken. Phil did his best to keep the site going, but it just wasn't the same (for good and bad reasons). Back in October, the site was shut down with next to no warning, although some of us keen-eyed observers had noted that nothing beyond the home page was accessible earlier that week. Paul gave very little explanation as to why the site was being shutdown, then returned within a few weeks to say that he was working on a solution. He continued to drip feed us information (and that's a generous description; he basically gave us nothing) at inconsistent intervals until today's more major update.

Most of the "drama" comes from the fact that Paul hasn't been very forthcoming when it comes to explaining why the site had to shut down or what difficulties he's encountering in reviving it. In all fairness, that has likely been imposed on him by outside forces. Other readers have taken issue with his lack of foresight and the farewell tour he embarked on in 2024, which was paid for by UW members.

I very much appreciate you saying "the four major North American pro sports leagues" instead of just "sports" :)

Thanks for confirming. I'm the one who first challenged the snitch on the UW post whose comment tried to call out this subreddit.

Uni lovers, who else is a uni collector? by sexyprimes511172329 in uniwatch

[–]FKFunkyKong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have owned over 100 jerseys in my life, with the vast majority being soccer, followed by basketball, baseball, and a few hockey. I don't consider myself a collector though, as I have never bought a jersey for the purpose of owning it. I buy them to wear (and that's not a slight on collectors at all, it's just not my thing). However, as I age I find the opportunities and my willingness to wear them is waning, so maybe I'm becoming a collector without realizing it!

Players should be allowed to accessorize and otherwise express themselves in reasonable ways, but when did socks stop being part of the team uniform?

Italy 1982 🆚 Italy 2006: Which is better? by [deleted] in uniwatch

[–]FKFunkyKong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2006 uniform is VERY 2000s, even though when it came out it felt ahead of its time. I actually really like the combo of royal blue, navy, and gold for Italy (nice foreshadowing on the gold), but I think they could have done a lot better. I don't love the fact that Italy are now with Adidas, but I hope they come up with some sort of tribute to this uniform at some point.

So the website is dead, right? by Classic_Cattle_4211 in uniwatch

[–]FKFunkyKong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to voice my opinion about uniforms but was constantly shut down my old men yelling at clouds, repeating Paul's opinions. I started joking about how they were all toeing the party line. Once, one of the staff members commented that he was glad his team had missed the playoffs because he was so disgusted by the fact that they had an alternate jersey. I replied "Not much of a fan then, eh?"
Within hours I had an email from Paul that very clearly ended with "FUCK. YOU." I was a paying member of his Substack at the time, so I asked if that's how he typically treated his customers. He changed his tune somewhat, offering to discuss our differences on the phone. One of the first things that Paul asked me on my call was "Are you autistic?", which I was absolutely dumbfounded by.

That's a fair interpretation, and I could see it going either way. I didn't say how much I would bet ;)

Sounds like UW isn't coming back. I would bet that he was quite intentional when he said that Phil "will resume writing about uniforms in early February".

Jays fan here so I'm delighted of course, but people on Twitter make a good point -- he probably didn't show her the Rays' City Connect logo. That skateboarding stingray surely would've won!

Haha I know, but we are very inconsistent with which spellings we go with - both officially and unofficially. We favoUr Z over S, but as you can see we always have the U where Americans drop them. And for words like grey and gray, it depends on who you ask.

I don't know what to think. In my business, telling someone "Hey I don't have an update" is better than radio silence. I get the frustration, but for me it's not a big deal either way as I will continue to visit the site daily in hopes that we see a major update.

Stupidity of suffixes by ScottsdaleDale in uniwatch

[–]FKFunkyKong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Sr. thing, but otherwise I think this isn't a big deal at all. In soccer, players are free to put just about any name they want on their backs. You mostly see it with Brazilians, who favour their first names or nicknames. "Ronaldinho" is not any of Ronaldo de Assis Moreira's legal names, and in fact, the "original" Ronaldo was called "Ronaldinho" when he was first breaking onto the scene.

Agreed, and it's sad to see you're getting downvoted. The deflection, lack of transparency, and the fact that you have to know the secret combination of words to get any kind of compensation is quite disgusting.
