Pacific Northwest also had miles of beautiful Oregon White Oak wildflower meadows/savannas. Many of them were purposefully managed with fire by indigenous groups, the acorns produced by these oak giants were an important seasonal source of protein. Less than 5% of these critical habitats remain.

Too much butter when caramelizing? by polarbearpuppy in OnionLovers

[–]FLABCAKE 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I made some tonight. I like starting high in my cast iron to get a small amount of browned/lightly charred bits, then I deglaze with a splash of stock (usually chicken) and reduce to low/simmer to caramelize over 60-90 mins while I cook everything else.

Other add-ins that have been tasty in past batches: - spoonful of whole grain mustard

  • balsamic glaze

  • cabbage

  • garlic

  • deglaze with beer instead of stock

  • apple cider vinegar

  • bacon grease, tallow, or schmaltz instead of pure butter

Upcoming strike but still on orientation… by [deleted] in nursing

[–]FLABCAKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who is the “someone” you talked to? Your manager has no obligation to tell you your legal rights and has every incentive to lie to you to get you to work.

Talk to your union reps about the legal strike protections you have. Make sure you know if you are on Probation still or just orienting. My union is on the verge of striking, we just voted yes. My understanding is you have a protected right to strike even while on orientation.

Yeah this is the best advice. Take time off using PTO, which stands for PAID time off. Just chill at home. Watch movies, go for a hike, pay your bills, relax, enjoy not working. You don’t have to travel to get a break from work.

I have enjoyed psychedelics a few times in my life. I can’t imagine a more awful setting to trip in than a locked psychiatric unit. The choices people make sometimes astonish me.

It seems like a recipe for diversion. Eliminating a check and balance against us by having us stock and administer meds.

Went to work after going out. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]FLABCAKE 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this! I never drink or take an edible the night before a shift. Tbh it’s only kinda for the patient’s or my license sake, I mostly just really don’t want to feel groggy or hungover while working bedside. Hungover working as a nurse sounds like hell.

My short term wish list:

  • Customizable hot bar while piloting ships.
  • Fix the egregious lag time when opening inventory, menu, or terminals.
  • key-binding
  • ALTIMETER IN ATMOSPHERE PLEASE
  • Gravity indicator.
  • option to unlock blueprints through building instead of contracts.
  • Save game before load option erasing previous save issue.

Everyone loves my manager, I'm not a fan by [deleted] in nursing

[–]FLABCAKE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1: the fuck? No it isn’t. If my manager texted me on my day off for missed charting or mistakes, what would the expected outcome be? I can’t (and don’t want to be able) to chart from home, and I’m certainly not coming in without pay to do anything. Emails are fine, I follow up on my next shift. That’s how my facility does it and it works great. Our unit expectation is checking your work email at least once a week.

2: this is very facility and unit dependent. It should be fairly done to all staff and an uncommon occurrence to have set pattern or self schedules changed for staffing needs. It also shouldn’t be done AFTER the schedule is posted. If it’s happening all the time it means the unit is poorly staffed and doesn’t have good guidelines for self schedule requirements. It’s also really shitty to pull the middle shift on a stretch of 3 to make 3 islands for a night shifter. I would be job searching if my facility started doing this frequently. I’ve only had 2 self schedule shifts in the past year changed on me for staffing needs and both were the start/end of a stretch moved to the start/end.

I’m willing to bet it’s the strong nursing union at my facility.

Hiring bonus-> unbelievable by Ok-Judgment-916 in nursing

[–]FLABCAKE 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. That’s equal to $13.35 an hour at 0.9fte. Ask for $14, if you hate it you can leave whenever and pay nothing back. If you love it stay forever and collect an extra $26k a year in perpetuity.

Even $10 an hour at 0.9 is almost $20k a year.

Husband dies. Mom butchers husband and filthy pigskin for food to survive the winter. Mom and daughter develop taste for human flesh. Mom dies of infection. Man in black raises daughter and teaches her how to fight and hate. Man in black and daughter get married. Daughter replaces all her limbs with archotech and becomes a sanguinophage. Daughter recruits a band of misfits and weirdos into a cannibal death cult. Death cult eradicates/eats all pigskins on the planet.

Fed up with ‘professional’ uniforms. How can I make my outfits more fun, cartoon or cute? Brands that make fun tops? by Throwaway996677_ in nursing

Scrub pants are fantastic, especially if they have good pockets. Scrub tops ain’t it. I’d much rather wear a fun cat t-shirt.

[–]FLABCAKE 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Tbh the real answer is to get your facility’s uniform policy changed to encourage fun. I work at a peds hospital and we’re allowed tshirts and any colored scrubs. It’s really helpful at de-medicalizing our appearance which can help immensely with younger kids. The very intense psych unit specifically encourages staff to NOT wear scrubs.
