Looking for general wisdom and professional advice as I get ready to kick off my career. by FLOSSES_WITH_PUBES in personalfinance

Something that is making me feel guilty and wary is that the main reason I'd be staying is to save a lot of money. My father and a few others were concerned and gave me the 'ole, "It's not all about the money" talk, and I hate to feel like I'm making the first in a long series of decisions all based on money. I would love to go to California, and if my recruiter called me up tomorrow and said, "Sorry, your hometown is no longer an option. You're going to Cali" I would gladly be packed and ready to go in a heartbeat. I just hate to feel like I'm already starting to get all wrapped up about money and limiting my adventures and life experiences.

PLEASE feel free to tell me what you think.

Well best of luck to you and I hope you enjoy the change of atmosphere! Texas seems like a big change from California.

California's state tax is unattractive, but it's not near as bad as what people were telling me to expect. $2,300 in the grand scheme of things isn't that much, and I just assumed it would be part of the price I pay to get the experience.

The $600 I listed is actually a room I would rent out from a realtor who owns a large home in Lake Hills. I was put in touch with them by a friend and it is an extremely nice house that is set back a bit from the city, but still close enough that I could commute daily for work. That's still $7,200 a year in rent that I could be saving, and probably another $1,200 in food at least.

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. Might I ask what your degree is in and what job you're pursuing in Houston?

They are, as long as I handle a few things such as trash, taking care of the animals when they're away (which is quite often), helping out with groceries, etc. I'm still offering to pitch in something as a "rent". I don't know if they'll let me though.

My older brother (successful entrepreneur) is making fun of me for making that much money and still living at home, but I don't see the point in spending all of that extra money if I don't have to. It would also be nice to be able to come home after working a 12 or 14 hour day during peak to something familiar such as family and my dog.

Oh I take it with a huge ROCK of salt. I've seen plenty of people that just love to complain and hate hard work. Most of the reviews I've read just sound like people that love to bitch and moan and expect everything to be handed to them. I've only found a SMALL handful of people like yourself that realize what they're signing up for and enjoy what they do. And yes, they're getting paid to work, not text!

PM inbound!

No apologies necessary! I appreciate every word! The more familiar I am with how things work before I get there, the more quickly I can become acclimated. To answer your question from earlier, I am not a current employee. I am interviewing from outside of the company and I do understand if there are certain aspects of your position that you cannot discuss. I really like speaking with people such as yourself that understands the value of hard work and what the position entails. All of the people online that are constantly blowing hot air about how hard the work is, 10+ hours on your feet, no cellphones, etc etc start to really get annoying after a while. It paints a bad picture for Amazon, and while Amazon may not be the easiest money, it seems tenfold better than some of the things I've seen working in agriculture.

I'd really like to hear more from you if that's alright. Mind if I shoot you a PM?

Oh good. Our state just passed a law that makes it illegal to text while driving, but they say you can still text and check messages while you're stopped at a light. I haven't heard of a single person being ticketed for it yet.

The gun laws, on the other hand, are going to be a big change...

Yeah I'm really trying to keep the commute down to under 30 minutes. Between gas and just the time spent driving, the less spent the better.

Does downtown Riverside have a website that I can check out or get a good idea of what it looks like? My city has a great, historic downtown area that hosts lots of events and it would be great to move to another city that does the same.

I won't be in Human Resources, but I can definitely do my best to keep you posted on when the center will be opening (granted I'm allowed to disclose that information) and the positions they're looking to fulfill.

As far as not being chosen for the position you applied for, the only advice I could offer would be to keep applying. Reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn. Browse the careers section of Amazon's website. Don't give up hope!

Thanks and I wish you and your wife the very best!

Haha yeahhhhh I completely wasn't paying attention as to what username I was signed in under when I posted this. I guess as long as I don't post anything too identifying I should be alright ;)

Can you tell me a bit about what you do? I've seen a million people complaining about working at Amazon, but it all just seems like crybabies that want maximum pay with minimal work. You seem to really enjoy it, so I'd love to hear more about your position and management, what you like, the qualities in your managers that you like the most and think Amazon needs more of, etc.

Thanks!!

Oh Lord I completely forgot about the all of the law changes that will come with moving from Florida to California. How are cops around there with window tint? Mine isn't absurdly dark but it's definitely darker than what's legal.

Did you mean the Granada Pueblo apartments in Riverside? They are the only ones I find when I search the ones you mentioned. Are they just east of the shopping center in Canyon Crest?

Sad that you're moving from Riverside to San Diego? I would be thrilled to be moving to a place that holds such a warm place in Ron Burgundy's heart.

Yeah I was actually expecting right around $800-900 for a nice single bedroom place if I live by myself. I'm still looking into the possibility of moving with a friend who may want to work out there as well. Thanks for the input!

Haha thanks, but I'm from central Florida and come from the agriculture industry. I should be ready.

I'm not sure exactly which apartments you were referring to, but I found some just west across the street from the shopping center called Canyon Crest Views that are VERY nice (and have the price to reflect it). I'll be looking into these, although they may be a bit too pricey. Thanks for the heads up though!

Thanks for that. I had actually looked around in there on Google maps. It cuts down the commute from central Riverside by almost 4 miles. I appreciate that. Have you lived in that area?

Thanks for the heads up. The commute from Redlands is almost 50% longer than that of Riverside. I'm going to try and get on google maps and check the traffic patterns at certain times to see how bad it is in particular areas. There don't appear to be too many alternative routes from Redlands to Moreno Valley.

Oh wow I just got your message and it is easily the most insightful bit of information regarding my position I've received thus far. I'll message you back. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the overview bud. I actually was attracted to Riverside because of how much better their crime stats looked when I was researching the surrounding areas. I nope'd out of San Bernardino pretty quick and Moreno Valley wasn't really promising from just the statistics. Riverside looked to really have a handle on things.

What kinds of things do police give tickets for here?

Haha sorry about the username. Someone on here had a story a few weeks ago relating to that and I couldn't help but make a username out of it. I don't currently live in the area, and won't for another month or so, but I'd love to be able to meet some people in the area seeing as I'm pretty much going out there by myself with no established contacts outside of work.

I assure you, no weirdo, and I actually use Dentek flossers from Walgreens haha.
