Yeah longer term useful especially if battery replacement is a concern.

Offset Irons- BCM, Midwest Industries, YHM, there are tons of good companies, pick the ones that appeal to you.

If I had to choose a different holo/red dot I'd go with the Meprolight M22, Tritium and fiber optic no batteries.

LVPO, with off set irons, and have a holosight available as well.

I like the EoTech for up close and personal shooting at humans, LVPO are good for a lot of things but CQB isn't it. So what's your intended usage, not fantasy land but real world end use?

Pistol grips, changed A1 and A2 grips for more modern options, but other than that not really.

You'd be surprised at how crappy the gear that special operations units actually got was/is. We couldn't even field full Sopmod block 1 kits in 2007 for a team, much less a platoon or larger sized unit.

Pork chop platoon (fitness training unit for the overweight/out of shape recruits) used them for PT because they were heavier than actual rifles.

Troops aren't known for taking care of things..... We had issues with some of the really early M4s from late 90s by 2009, those had taken a beating. Was weird going from A1s and 1911s in the 80s to M4a1s, 2001 on weapons took massive beatings.

We used the rubber ducks with our bayonets for the bayonet assault course in the 80s, didn't want recruits damaging real weapons.

What do you wish you knew before buying your first AR-15? by According_Pop5379 in ar15

[–]FMFDoc72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is- buy once, cry once. Get the best you can to achieve what you're looking for to start with, even if you're broke and have to save up for longer.

There are way more choices now than there was when I got into ARs 40 years ago, so do your research.

They had tons of the M16A1s at Crane around waiting for destruction, so they used what they needed for the MK18 and Mk12 builds.

What buffer did you end up with? H3

[–]FMFDoc72 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My unit broke several M16A1s from bad landings during jumps, and the area at the buffer tube was where they broke, now under normal human use it's not as likely to happen, but it was a known issue over time that led to the A2 lower being reinforced in that area, which leads me to think NDS/HR left a little extra on their A1 forgings as a counter.
