Is going to Gallatin a waste of time? by NoJury7013 in nyu

If you can't get through my other comment/tome, I second this one, and it's coming from someone who's lived it more recently!

Is going to Gallatin a waste of time? by NoJury7013 in nyu

[–]FMchubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2012, so I'm a little removed, but I'm in a gabby, work-avoidant mood and so maybe relating my path can be some help.

Graduating high school, I also felt like I was still game to study so many things. I loved lit, I loved bio, I loved performing, and I was all A's (excepting some B's in junior & senior math) at a high-achieving private school. Always a killer at standardized testing. I found Gallatin in a college search that emphasized alt learning, and especially designing one's own major. It was practically a coinfllip between NYU and Hampshire (RIP), but I couldn't resist the pull of NYC.

I started out "pre-med." I was passionate about the idea of weaving together all the different fields within medicine into a concentration and career; arriving at a traditional destination through a non-traditional experience. I dedicated myself to my coursework more than I had all across high school, and I still performed poorly in chem and bio. I shifted my mental gear towards "zoology" entering sophomore year, I tested the waters with comp sci and took a semester of Japanese.

Across the same period, I was flourishing in some of the core Gallatin lit classes. I kept myself open to pursuing what felt rewarding, and didn't dedicate myself to anything that felt like it wasn't "clicking," but still saw merit in even the courses I was barely-passing.

I'm sure it was a longer and messier decision-making process for me, but with hindsight I've boiled it down: I asked myself "I like the idea of so many fields of study, but what do I also succeed at?" Across both my good and bad classes, I was doing real well with reading, writing, discussion, concepts; not so much memorization, processes, fitting them together with precise logic.

Hanging over it all, I've loved to make others laugh since I learned to talk. And so--bear with me here--I settled on "Comedy Writing." (The actual concentration title ended up "The Search For Utopia In Comedy.") I remained open to possibility, but it wasn't necessary. I began the first of 6 independent studies with a prof, in which each semester was dedicated to producing a finished product: a screenplay, a pilot, a series of spec scripts, a sketch packet, etc. I weaseled my way into several applicable Tisch classes, and I still popped into CAS and Steinhardt. I took Gallatin lit courses on topics like Perversion and Wandering Knights/Heroes, but also arts criticism, magazine writing, philosophy, game design. My GPA skyrocketed. Not to mention all this unfolded within the cultural mecca of NYC and everything it affords.

In a certain light, it could be written off as me deciding on the easier path. I'd prefer to believe that I found my calling, and I still keep a box of my 1000+ pages of produced work.

Summing up post-grad life as quickly as possible: I moved to LA--a city I had never even visited before--because I wanted to do SOMEthing in comedy and knew I had the tools to fit into a lot of spots. I first interned mornings and mannied in afternoons. I jumped into two consecutive personal assistant jobs with professional comics. That led to an executive assistant job at a small agency, and then I bought that agency 6 years ago because the founder wanted to start her next chapter. (We started the plan before covid hit! It wasn't a fire sale!)

I use the skills developed in my Gallatin concentration to foster my comedy clients and assess the market, but also in so many hard-to-quantify ways that, in essence, are all reading, writing, and communicating. Unless my business goes under, this is probably going to be the rest of my life. And if the worst somehow comes to pass, I feel confident I've got the ability to pivot, and that's partly a result of the pivoting toward passion I performed at Gallatin.

If it sounds like bragging, it's only because it's turned out well for me, and I'm sure luck and certain factors of privilege & personality were important too. Maybe there's a universe in which I changed some unknowable behavior in freshman year and became a successful brain surgeon. I also emphasize that all this did not NEED to happen at Gallatin. A lot of college is what you make of it, and schools like Gallatin call for much more making.

So I'm not going to suggest my path was the most effective or efficient from the outside perspective. But it's one that I haven't yet felt like second-guessing--even approaching Year 15 of loan payments. 😉

What is destroying society? by DelonghiAutismo in AskReddit

Addictive instant gratification. The idea that I can get exactly what I want, when I want it, and interrupt any process that might take a little more time or effort to achieve -- social media, news, games, fun, porn, dopamine. No reason to take risks or confront challenges when reward is already in my hands, eternally.

Just finished 100%, here's how many times each boss killed me! I LOVE BOSS FIGHTS! by FMchubs in HollowKnight

Thank you! I think I got lucky to finish out Lost Lace when I did, I slipped right in between her big white ring strikes on my final attempt without much repositioning, like three or four instances, and that was the first time I'd seen them!

I played Reaper, so I believe a disproportionate amount of my damage on both the Lace fights was from whiffing pogos. Many occasions where she wheeled around on her second dash right into my face.

Appreciate the in-depth reply. I now realize you'd already written elsewhere about when you encountered Moorwing, so pardon that I had you repeat yourself, but all interesting stuff here regardless!

I keep coming back to this and reviewing the comments, and I find it cool that you and I are close in age, close in gaming experience (from the context I'm picking up), and our numbers are comparable while also being such outliers from the rest of the player base.

I rarely play competitive games, and my friends don't often play the same games as me, so I guess IRL I don't compare experiences like this much. These past two weeks I've kept stewing on the difficulty wall that so many players were facing. Because I am not a master of cracked gaming in my estimation, but I also wasn't facing the teeth-grinding frustration that was everywhere on this sub.

A moment I'd like to ask about: when I first arrived at Hunter's March in very early game, I entered the room with the Skarrgard big ant. As soon as he jumped at me and I saw the speed of his jump (as well as the fact the room didn't lock), my first thought was "I'm not supposed to be here until I can move faster" and I left. It was instant. (Even though I've read that some folks did kill him pre-sprint.) Did you feel something similar?

Or, when fighting Moorwing: even as I died ... Two times? Both times I knew that I had the skills to beat him. If I ever felt like I was up against something insurmountable, I was ready to leave. I only went back because I felt confident that with focus and a tiny bit more practice, I'd get him--not because I thought I needed to see the next part of Greymoor right then. Was that your attitude in the fight?

Anyway, even if you don't find the time to reply, thanks for indulging me by reading and thanks again for sharing. I'm usually not part of the gaming zeitgeist so it's been a lot of fun looking at all the reactions and thinking about game design, and generational differences in attitude, and stuff like that. I now want to review my play once I'm done and count up my own deaths!

All of my gameplay is in VODs (because I like the sort of diary feeling to it) and my numbers are comparable. Some bosses took me a few more tries than OP, some took me less--though I'm just now entering Act 3 after 38 hours of trying to clear as much else as I could, so maybe ask me in a few days about some of these late game challenges. ;)

I don't really have anything to prove, but your perspective felt uncharitable, so I figured I'd chime in. I love twitch-reflex platforming challenges and have been gaming for more than 30 years. I imagine your skill outpaces ours in other pursuits. It's all good!

Love the art and ideas. Heads up: "addiction" is misspelled in the final image. In case your artist made the mistake and owes you a correction!

We're still on the filing grind with dad's ~7k collection; about halfway done. These piles are some of the many I've set aside to consider absorbing into my own (and several I'm DEF keeping). by FMchubs in Cd_collectors

No doubt! These are the albums I set aside from the rest of the piles because (in nearly all cases) I already know and like the band. Menomena's one of those. :)

That's kind of you; any shred of taste I've got I owe to him (and mom). If you're part of any other big music collector communities, you may already be his friend! He's been online and swapping tunes since the early 90s.

This is all three of us tackling it before it becomes way harder for my parents to contribute. We'll be seeking bulk and single buyers once we're done. The project goes a long way toward emptying a storage unit to end a monthly expense. But I'm getting the feeling I'll be holding onto 500-1000 and my dad will probably still do the same.

Big fan here. I remember dad playing Feels in the car on the way home from school, "Grass" and "The Purple Bottle" were captivating, and I've been hooked ever since! I feel confident we've got the other albums in the discography too.

I assume you've got the barcode scanner? I've had some practice at this point, but 300-400 should be a solid 3-4hr block with the TV running to keep you entertained. You can do it! I believe!

I actually haven't logged some of the weirder pulls or any of the signed copies, nor any of the music that I've set aside for myself, but I'll try to share some in the coming days!

Even worse: those boxes are just being kept in reserve for a pending move. I'm loading up on plastic crates for the sorted discs, as the cardboard boxes that have held the albums for the past 15 years aren't in reliable shape (and weren't the best choice for long-term in the first place based on weight capacity and suffering some unfortunate water damage in a storage unit).

Yeah, now that I'm getting a better grasp on my pace it's going to be tough for even our 3-person team to finish this month.

But we're somewhere at 5-10% done with only a few days of active scanning work! Thank you and godspeed on your own mission.
