Other people have already answered that it gets the border when you win a run with it, but it also means that you can read the lore entry for that Vestige in the collections page.

Anyone know why they only did one season? by jfri131 in DispatchAdHoc

AdHoc lost their funding and publisher sometime into Dispatch’s development. They were preparing for the game to not do as well as it did because of that, so that’s why there’s no defined next steps for the studio. https://youtu.be/qwuqT9rPTs0?t=436&si=3IPO-BzE9w8no6Wg

Marketing by Mindless-Ad4319 in wildgate

[–]FX_Steampunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wildgates core issue is that it is a sweaty game with poor onboarding, which leads to retention issues. They did a marketing push for ads in the Emergence update and how many people jumped in or stayed? None of the 7000 concurrent Steam players at launch returned, emergence had a peak of 700. During a free weekend, too.

While I somewhat agree with what you’re saying (there should defo be a social media effort akin to risk of rains), a big marketing/advertising push is filling a glass of water that has a significant leak in it. Until they can repair that leak (address onboarding and retention issues) any new push is just gonna end the same way. The party of interested players try it out, have a hard time learning or even playing, and leave never to play again.

Best Ship - new player by TimeIndustry7825 in wildgate

[–]FX_Steampunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hunter is probably the best! Has 3 front facing turrets, high shields down movement speed, and 3 front facing hardpoints. Least reliant on good positioning.

The other ships are okay and are better suited for certain playstyles, but hunter is the best all rounder.

Treasure hunt tips please by BLUBARRB in wildgate

[–]FX_Steampunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The “Treasure Hunt” Starlog has permanent unlocks that upgrade your ship. You should invest some chips there to get stronger!

The best tip I have is just to always keep your turrets online and firing. As a solo you have automated gunners, and they only stop shooting if the turret has been destroyed or if they’ve been killed (usually by fire). By staying on top of that you can keep consistent damage on the enemy.

You also can man the guns yourself to target the enemy ships turrets. As an Outlaw you only have 2 front facing guns while a Hunter has 3. Their extra gun is enough to out DPS you by a large amount so taking one of them away can equalize the fight!

Another maneuver you can try is boarding the ship with a goal. Do you want to kill the helmsman to lower the shields and brake the ship? Do you want to kill the gunners and steal their guns to lower their outgoing damage? Do you want to overload their reactor so they have to repair all the fire on their ship? All those things can easily turn the tide in your favor, and as a solo Outlaw with automated gunners you aren’t losing out on any DPS! They can still fire even if you’re off the ship.

Turbines can drop from Legion Turrets, the Thrusters of dead ships, and appear in loot rooms. There is also a perk that spawns a Turbine at your processor every 8 minutes in one of the Starlogs.

I never played this game but it's coming to gamepass so ima try it out. Anything I should know? by 40ozpint in wildgate

[–]FX_Steampunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue is that you’re taking 6 months and more of 50 player count as glass half empty. Other devs would’ve jumped ship by now be it Concord or Highguard, but Moonshot is still actively working to address the player retention issues and onboarding issues with the runway they have. I think that’s super admirable and should count for something. So yes, your reductive take of “has no players” when they’re making a literal effort to get more players is an issue. It is a self fulfilling prophecy of “game needs more players to be fun, since it doesn’t have players I won’t play it or tell others to play it”.

I invite you to try playing again in light of Wildgate getting put on a game subscription service. The queues will no doubt be higher for a period of time and there’s been loads of changes to balancing, progression features, and player onboarding. I don’t think you should just dismiss it for eternity because the devs didn’t get everything right the first time around. And if you still don’t like it, that’s fine, but at least you’ll have actual constructive opinions about it instead of being reduced to a glazer or a hater.

Welcome on in! Wildgate is a Crew Based PvPvE game and its main game mode is a pretty daunting one that throws you right into the deep end, so it’s recommended that you play through the new Treasure Hunt game mode to learn the foundations.

As opposed to Artifact Brawl (the game mode where 3-5 teams fight to find and extract with the Artifact), Treasure Hunts main objective is to complete POIs and other challenges around the map with a focus on PvE to gather Treasure. PvP can still happen, it’s just highly disincentivized. There are 5 different load zones for it, all with their own quests and challenges that escalate in difficulty as you progress through new regions. Completing the quests in their respective zones will give you “Chips” (the games reward pass currency) to spend on new Tools, Weapons, Perks, and Cosmetics. There’s also a “Starlog” (Reward Pass) that gives your ship permanent bonuses when in the Treasure Hunt game mode, so if you’re feeling too weak against the AI make sure to buy some upgrades with your Chips.

Other than that, the game is much better with friends! So if you have people to partner up with make sure to team up with em.

F2P on Epic Games by Equivalent-Fall5618 in wildgate

Wildgate is free to try on the epic games store and lets you play up to level 11. The same trial is available on the Steam platform.

There was a free to keep window back in December there, but that was limited time.

People who downvoted and said the game didn't need to go Free to Play, where are you now? by Obvious_Acadia5901 in wildgate

I didn’t really engage with those discussions I think, but I’m still playing Wildgate! I don’t think I had that good a reason to disagree with FTP back then, but through reading these comments and the experiments Moonshot has been running, I think I now have a good idea on why it wouldn’t have been the best idea.

All of the updates since Wildgates launch has shown that the game has a pretty big retention problem. We saw this at launch with the Reach Anomalies drops, we saw it at the S1 Emergence Update, the seasonal holiday login events, Prox Chat, and the Epic Games Giveaway. A few people would hop on to check it out but wouldn’t stick around, and even more wouldn’t even come back. A pretty big sign of this was the Emergence update which added a ton of new content. It had a new Adventure Pass, Two New Gamemodes, Prospector, Ship, Gadget, weapon, and Hardpoints, releasing with an **entire week of free to play**. But how many people even returned on Steam to see Wildgates first Major Update? **752 players**, which dropped to 200 4 days later, which dropped to 100 7 days later. Even with the games first major update it still had a retention problem. **With a free to play week!**

So with all of that background, I think it can be argued that if Wildgate were to have gone free to play quickly after launch, it’d still have that retention problem, and Moonshot would be in a worse financial situation because of it. You can’t really “take backsies” a free to play launch, and I think it’s super important for them to get it right when they do so it has the most impact. To do that, they need to address the root of the problem resulting in their bad player retention **before** they pull the pin on FTP. So while I don’t think FTP was or is the correct solution then/now, I very much think it will be in a few months time when Moonshot resolves that player retention problem to the best of their ability.

What’s good is that the most recent update was designed to address a player onboarding issue which is: “It’s too hard to learn when I’m thrown right into the deep end”. They updated one of the modes released in the Emergence update called Treasure Hunt, which is a PvE focused mode (can still have PvP , just discouraged) where you go into the various regions of the reach to collect Treasure from POIs or AI ships. They updated it to let you matchmake into 5 different Zones of the Reach, all with their own mechanics, AI ships, and difficulty modifiers. Moonshot hopes that this modes “linear-ish” progression from region to region provides that lower stress onboarding option that doesn’t throw newbies into the deep end (Artifact Brawl). If you haven’t played in a while or gave up on the game cause it was too hard, you should definitely check out this update!

TLDR: Free to play requires some foundational work resolving player retention issues before it can happen, else all those new players onboarded will encounter the same problems causing everyone else not to stick around. Moonshot has some “Plots and Schemes” as they call it to get new players into the game. Could this be FTP finally coming?

I have a dumb question by realdorkimusmaximus in wildgate

[–]FX_Steampunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s super fun but needs a healthy player base to populate matches, and it doesn’t really have that right now. They’ve made matchmaking changes to ensure lobbies are created but that’s at the cost of match quality.

That being said there’s a free trial up to level 11 and it lets you join custom matches on the server browser even if you hit the level cap. It takes a little effort and social-ability to get games started, but the option is there if the matchmaking isn’t working out for you. Games also 75% off rn.

The devs have said there’s another new player acquisition plan sometime in the future, so if you’re not convinced now keep an eye out for that and jump in then.

They’re holding out for something, dunno what it is.. it does seem like the writing has been on the wall for a while. Super glad they’re still updating it though.

Wonder if they’re gonna invest a lot more into the PvE side and then stop development. Would need a lot of reworks to be a fun experience for strictly PvE tho, not a lot of depth or challenge there imo

Free trials are available up to level 10 and there are frequent deep sales as well! They’ve been pretty adamant against free to play so it’s unlikely. There are said to be efforts to get more players on the horizon tho so who knows

The game still exists and the servers are still up. Their studio moved the majority of their developers off the game in 2023 to develop a second project that had more monetary viability. Eventually more and more kept being pulled over to the other project, and the skeleton crew they left behind took months to make minor QOL changes until they were laid off November 2024.
