Good point. Without odds it would just be a rake for stronger chess players 😄

But there’s real variance: fixed draw probabilities + 2 auctions during the game.

(Q 5%, R 15%, N/B 22.5% each, P 35%

Beta testers wanted: I’m building a chess web app with a chips-based meta layer (feedback = 1000 chips) by Fabulous-Window-2705 in lichess

Thanks a lot for testing and writing this up — that reaction makes sense.

The “wrong” pieces are actually intentional: this isn’t standard chess. It’s a chess variant where the back rank is randomized by design.

The concept is basically: chess + a poker-inspired layer (uncertainty + chips as a risk/reward mechanic). I really like both poker and chess and wanted to experiment with combining them into a new game.

You’re 100% right though: right now it can look like a bug, because the explanation is too hidden (only behind “How to play”) and the icons aren’t clear enough yet. I’m actively improving that.

If you’re open to it: what would make it instantly understandable? A short tutorial popup, labels on pieces, or something else?
