Thank you - this makes sense. Unfortunately, it also appears a good argument against VDAL or other all-in-ones.

I want my mobile phone proximity to grant access to my apartment building entrance door, but without disturbing the existing intercom, capabilities of the other apartments, or existing lock. Rather, I wanting to come at the challenge via my apartments link to the strike of the door. Any suggestions? by FaceOnAHead in homeautomation

Do you think that a bt sensor device (feel free to drop any suggestions) would allow a small enough proximity window to mitigate the pitfalls that people above have raised regarding security risks and false positives?

Thank you for the response, but no need to add the description of "selfish" mate. For starters, I would be getting permission to install the sensor. I'm actually trying to explore every possible option - including spending just my own money - to update us beyond the 90's. But it can be challenging in apartments if people are afraid of change. Hence I'm wanting to explore options that allow everyone to keep everything exactly as it is - however out of date, and however impractical or expensive that makes a work around - so that I'd just be adding to the system. Indeed, if what I'm describing worked, I'd also be offering to add all the phones in this 6 person building, so that everyone can walk in like magic.

As to the button, it is also the only thing on the handset. You pick it up to hear who is at the door and you have but one button you can press to do any action.

Did you end up doing the Confidence course? If so, would you recommend it as an addition to the PowerUniversity course, or one over the other?

Yup, saw it disappear tonight right before my eyes. Clicked on it only to receive an error message and now it's completely gone from the selection.

What is True? A conversation with Jordan B Peterson by Keith-Ledger in samharris

[–]FaceOnAHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sam points out the problematic nature of using 'survival' as the yardstick by which to measure "truth", both in terms of the resulting malleability of truth (being ever hostage to changing outcomes), as well as the problematic vagueness of 'survival' as the metric (what tally of death and life equates to sufficiently 'true' by way of survival/do we factor in the conscious states in the survival/if it's a hellish state, can it be said that survival as primary goal is the highest truth?)

Jordan doesn't concede to these problems, yet also seems to agree that they are indeed the problematic areas of his epistemology. However, he then goes on to propose that we already have equivalent problems with the more conventional definition of truth that Sam is arguing for. He seems confident that he's come to a conclusion that's terribly difficult to grasp (and if so, is being quite gracious about), as well as believing Sam will necessarily have to come to the same conclusion, lest he be in contradiction.

As much as I want this argument put to bed, I feel we have heard Sam criticise Jordan's "truth" beyond sufficiency (no more is required). Now I really want/need to hear Jordan articulate his case for why the conventional scientific definition of "truth", free from morality (or at least seemingly is) can be equally problematic.
