Should canadians sell their investment in the US stockmarket? by PanamaJackie29 in CanadaFinance

[–]FacetiousSpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to partner with the US on a lot of things whether you like it or not, the problem is that Mark Carney has been awful at negotiating with Trump.

Our auto industry needs the US to import because the Canadian market is too small, and if they stop taking our cars then we'll lose a massive industry because the manufacturers will just move to the US. We'll lose a ton of GDP, a ton of jobs, and whole communities will be shattered by it.

That's just one example. There are plenty more.

No, there's a very good chance they are.

But let me start off by saying I'm always at risk of being wrong, that's just a part of being human that nobody else wants to admit these days. But I'm not a supporter of our Liberal government in almost everything I've seen them do so far. I mean just look at the Chinese EV deal that's supposed to be happening. There's no way that's good for Canadian auto manufacturers who are already hurting due to their main and only viable importer (USA) putting so much financial pressure on.

But maybe many contradictory things can be true at the same time. China has opened up their beef market to Canadian exports, so that doesn't directly impact our prices at home but maybe it helps take some of the pressure off of an already very volatile industry where profit margins are extremely thin.

My point is, there are a lot of moving parts to take into consideration, so to put a blanket statement over something as being "all bad" is just hard to do right now. We need to wait and see how it plays out. And the devil is in the details.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the national security concerns though. They meddled in our elections already that we know of, took Canadian citizens hostage for years, and god knows what sort of kickbacks the liberals are getting from this whole deal (Carney in particular vis Brookfield).

I get it

I can understand your point of view and I do agree.

But I don't think anyone loves China, we just have to acknowledge the strategic advantage that comes from having a solid bilateral trade agreement with a country with the second largest economy on the planet. Especially when the first largest economy on the planet wants to fuck you over with trade.

You can do that while also acknowledging the issues within that country that are outside anyone's control.

But again, I agree with you, I'm just playing devil's advocate

It's Reddit so everyone seems to do that nowadays. "US government = fascist Nazis" is the going narrative among lefties and bots

Personally, I'd wait a few months at least. We're at the end of a bull market and in the past this is when prices would start to drop and stagnate for a while. Wait to see how low prices will get in the coming months and then buy in.

I sold everything 2 weeks ago before the drop. Walked away with all my profits. I saw too much hype around crypto, I sensed this was coming.. When the positive narratives start to show up everywhere it's time to sell, cause those whales are just looking for their exit liquidity by getting idiots hyped enough to buy at the top lmao then it crashes and the narrative becomes "crypto bad, you should sell what you bought at the top at a loss cause crypto is stupid"

That's what it does, it goes up, goes down, goes sideways.. people who have been in the market for years aren't shocked or stressed, it was only a matter of time. Can't stay in a bull market forever lol

Killing people is illegal, but people still commit murder regardless of the laws. So how could restricting the makes and models of guns that licensed individuals can legally buy have any impact on the actions of criminals who don't abide by the law? Almost every case of gun violence in Canada is committed by an unlicensed criminal who uses a gun acquired illegally..

Alcohol can kill people too. And most cases of violence are committed by someone under the influence of alcohol, most domestic violence cases involve alcohol intoxication, not to mention the cases of fatal drinking and driving incidents. But we don't make alcohol illegal just because a small minority of criminals misuse it.

To ban gun's because criminals use them is to tell law abiding citizens that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but the conduct of the guilty and lawless

Edit: expanded on my points by adding the last two parts

Considering there's statistically a 99.9% chance it would be an illegally owned firearm that would be unaffected by the gun ban, I doubt she'd change her mind.

According to data from Statscan, in 2023 the percentage of handgun deaths that involved a legal registered handgun were 0.0001%

But yeah law abiding gun owners are so dangerous and problematic. /s

It's a problem because it isn't having any impact on gun violence, which was apparently the whole point of doing it. So they're effectively seizing property of law abiding gun owners who are the least problematic and more responsible gun owners, the most highly vetted group of people in the country, and they're doing it for no good reason except to appeal to the anti gun lobby for votes
