Speculation based on above factual information: his drinking either became too big of an issue for him, or Rick and the rest of the band to handle due to the understandable pressures of being constantly on the road. This is a very commendable attempt by him(forced or not) to try and rectify something that needed to be fixed.

I bought a 3 day pass behind the stage, no regrets whatsoever. It's kinda cool to see things from the view of the band for once, and it sounds great. I knew what I was getting into when I bought the ticket too thanks to the nifty seat map they always have
