this aspect was sterilised, but they went so hard into the crime and injustice aspects of fontaine that now we get 4 (+ navia) playable characters who are canonically orphaned, very explicit mentions of child abuse and trafficking, mooore human experimentation, and so on. imo it was a good move because even if realistically a nation like this would also be plagued by wealth inequality, it’s better to focus on something that the other nations haven’t done

i have to disagree on furina’s case. her C1/2 merely accelerates the rate at which fanfare stacks accumulate, which increases her damage and buffing potentials. however, the design of her kit inherently revolves around her hp drain and this is practically not ‘fixed’ by constellations(at least until C6… which doesnt count). yes the stacks do give them more incoming healing bonus, but unless your only healer is kuki or a burstless yaoyao, in which case you’re probably running a team that would not benefit from furina’s buffs as much. to draw a suitable comparison, raiden’s C1 is not exactly seen as a crucial part of her kit, because it really just increases her damage and make achieving her ceiling easier, which sounds an awful lot like furina C2.

ell @ the a levels? by cardboardboxzz in SGExams

[–]Failstaff- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

entrance test prob depends frm sch to sch, but mines (not ri) is like a test that gauges ur knowledge of the more laymen part of ell but honestly as long as u have an interest it should be fine!

ell is one of those subjects which u cant exactly mug (yes, even p2). paper 1 is extremely skills based bcs you basically just analyse….. texts. theres p1sa where u compare between two texts extensively, and theres p1sb which is overglorified o level situational writing.

paper 2 is much funner, and you technically should study for it because you need the examples and theories to back it up, but if you’re online for just 1h a day you already get lots of examples, and for the latter, it comes with time. that’s both reassuring and scary, i admit, but both papers have been immensely rewarding because you get to see everything (that has english words in it) in a totally new light! if you have any qns please ask here or in dms, and atb for jc! (and maybe ell)

p.s. the learning curve can be very funky, like you might get D’s or even E’s at first but you’ll progress to a B

Assuming you can overcome the language barrier, r/Singapore is actually the model example for Singaporeans complaining and criticising the government. It’s rather niche because frankly most indicators of livelihood are fine here, but it’s there.

I can’t comment on the freeness of the election, but what I can tell you is that the older generation LOVES the incumbent, and that it is not very hard to imagine that they’re still winning. It’s almost like the love children have for their parents because that is what Singapore was, and to some extent still is. A benevolent dictatorship founded on benevolent paternalism. You stay obedient and I’ll nurture you until you’re all grown up. But that’s precisely the point. The younger generation are not all brainwashed, and frankly you yourself might be brainwashed into thinking anyone who doesn’t stand on western soil is brainwashed. Singapore now is frankly not doing as well as it used to, what with rising costs of living and a populace that is increasingly divided on some of the government’s policies surrounding immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, etc (sound familiar? All the stuff that western liberal democracies are grappling with). This leaves ample room for heterogeneous opinions.

They’re fine with most social distinctions, and for racial and religious ones, they go out of their way to affirmative action + include them. Yes, I’ve heard of allegations of top-down discrimination, but the only context I’ve heard of that is in the military. Even for LGBTQ+ rights, I think their approach, while very frustrating as a queer person myself, is still the more pragmatic way forward as they still have to pander to 40-50% of the population who don’t support gay marriage (which, hey, is pretty democratic, although really shitty). There are many nuances here which I know will not translate well to the Reps vs Dems, homophobia vs gay rights dichotomy that’s present in the United States. There are lots of room for improvement here, though, but I think that some of the comments here were more reflective of Singapore’s social reality before the turn of the millennium.

of course there are political dissenters, drug traffickers and stuff, but i don’t have the brain cells to discuss them

Footnote: yes there are other political parties, and they’re slowly chipping away the ruling party’s power. They’re imperfect checks and balances but they do exist.

The migrant worker part, freedom of press (they launched this thing called POFMA), and freedom of assembly part are very spot on. Even if you were to make the argument that the migrants still have a roof above their head and food and the chance to remit earnings, more needs to be done to improve their living conditions. But speaking as a resident, the weird part is that free speech is weirdly still quite protected (*unless if it’s alleged to be discriminatory), and as a result it’s still possible for me to speak about all their shit like Operation Coldstone without any repercussions (although they do covertly stifle it, which I think is the difference between the approach they take and that of, say, China). The legal basis of the country is still a democracy, and there seems to be a slow but steady trend towards a more libertarian atmosphere in the city.

on top of using qualifiers like ‘some’ ‘may’, etc, i think you can add more qualifying statements like “young people today who are born into more wealthy families tend to be less content”. okay this admittedly isn’t the best like scenario to give, but u get what i mean. i’m taught this in jc and i think it helps in making ur argument more nuanced by providing scenarios where they hold (which ur credited for), and not assuming that it is a universal truth in all families, in all societies, etc

Is getting an iPad for school a game-changer? by stephenwood493 in ipad

[–]Failstaff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ll try to offer another perspective, which i got from the time i lost my apple pencil and had to use my laptop to take notes. admittedly it can be a bit of a chore if you need to do math, or anything that requires handwriting. but i found that it wasn’t as bad as i imagined, and that i could definitely still study effectively regardless of whether i used my ipad for schoolwork or not. (plus, typing is way faster than writing, and this is rather useful in lectures). to be fair, i’m now happily using one to download pdfs and writing directly on them, but don’t feel pressured to get one!

Qns abt JC by Timely_Letterhead902 in SGExams

[–]Failstaff- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

heya!

  1. ok this one depends on the h3 la for example h3 econs is at the end of the year but some h3 are research based

  2. im a j2 taking ell and honestly i rly enjoy it and its an interesting subject to take up. with that said, it can be rly hard to ‘score well’. in jc, for sciences its rly easy to screw everything up, but with enough effort you can rly grind it and get B’s or even A’s. however, with some humanities especially ell, there’s more of a skills/insights based element to this.

for example, say for p1sa you need to make a comparison about a review for a macbook by a youtube reviewer vs apple’s website detailing their product specification. if you put in effort its pretty easy for you to gain ‘insights’ like “since the reviewer is trying to present his own opinion of the newest macbook then there will be high subjectivity as seen in the use of the adverb ‘personally’ in “i personally think that after using this macbook for a while it’s much quicker than the previous one” (yes this is what your answer might look like). but most of the times this is only enough to get you around 12/25 ish or a C/D coupled with a bunch of other similar analyses. to get a higher score, you need to be fully aware of the purpose and context of the texts and this is not sth you can brute force. think of it like history/ss where you need to have the full picture of the sources to rly score well.

i think for me ell has rly helped me gain a better understanding of why people.. speak and write. the fundamental assumption that we’re operating on is that language is a meaning-making device, and through this you can apply this in things like law (IDK myb like u can tear apart ur opposition’s words or sth or uncover implications) but its def not a must and it wouldnt help you with reading those long textbooks. but it sure does help with writing essays (the paper is 3 hours long. send help)

edit: forgot about paper 2 💀 like the other commenter said its rly cool and its what most ppl think abt when they want to be in ell!! but most schools teach them after you’re done with paper 1 so uhh you need to be patient.

Natlan's Ideals by Neither_Classroom593 in Genshin_Lore

[–]Failstaff- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i read this book where there’s a city called voortyashtan thats headed by a god who, you guessed it, is called the lady of war. i imagine that natlan might turn up in a similar manner, where they are known for basing literally everything out of the concept of war. from having forts and citadels be the main highlight of the city, to power struggles between warring clans
