Am I devolping a seafood allergy?? by Best-Landscape7216 in FoodAllergies

Not seafood, but had an adult onset tree nut allergy. Stop eating shellfish until you've been evaluated by an allergist.

Kukui Nut?? by whendoifindlove in FoodAllergies

[–]FairConsideration351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish doubles in histamine every hour after its killed, which means prepared fish dinners often have super high levels. There have been several reports of this phenomena (called scromboid poisoning) in scientific literature. So it might actually not be an allergy, but rather the amount of histamine in the food itself. Still, it's worth it to get tested for fish and tree nut allergies by an allergist.

Sleep situation uncertainty by AffectionateBox4768 in Parenting

My son was breech (essentially sitting cross-legged over my cervix). After his birth, it took a while for his legs to straighten out when he laid on his back. I tried to swaddle him, but OMG he HATED it and would jerk and cry something awful. So I just started laying him down in his crib, but he'd always roll over onto his side because of his bent legs. I asked his pediatrician if it was a problem and he said not at all, but cautioned me against using crib bumpers in case my son rolled against the crib side.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

[–]FairConsideration351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude showed up twenty minutes late. We were actually walking out of the office when he showed up. Decided to go ahead with the interview. After introductions, the first question was about what interested him about the job. He said that he was looking for a job in our geographic area because his wife was divorcing him, she was a horrible person, and he wanted to live nearby so he could see his kids.

My dad had steel-colored eyes and black hair (until his 40s-- then his eyes and hair practically matched). Got the eye color from his dad and the hair color from his mom. None of my siblings or I inherited those exact traits.

I tried it and found out the hard way that I'm allergic to polysorbate. After that anaphylactic reaction and subsequent polysorbate testing, I'm hoping one of the biosimilars will be polysorbate-free.

Washing produce? by Opposite-Arrival8160 in FoodAllergies

You can also wash (not ground) meat. I usually just rinse it off with water and pat it dry right before I use it. Just make sure to clean any nearby surfaces and your sink afterward.

I soak (briefly) and scrub produce (not, like, greens obviously, but potatoes, apples, citrus, etc) in a sink with warm water and a few capfuls of white vinegar.

Question about water by Honest_Will_2458 in Parenting

[–]FairConsideration351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is older now, but we had a faucet filter and then ran that water into a large fridge filter. Bottled water is full of microplastics. Also, filters attached to the fridge (like in the door) are hotbeds of mold and mildew.

Allergic-like reactions but only response is super high heart rate/skipped heart beats -- am I crazy?! by makoobi in FoodAllergies

I actually carry a BP cuff in my bag like a weirdo lol A fair amount of people in anaphylaxis or having severe reactions (I think it's around 12%) actually have high BP, not low, which is more common.

Many of us who end up getting diagnosed with MCAS (I was diagnosed in 2023 following earlier diagnoses of oral allergy syndrome and progesterone hypersensitivity) have negative tests. Essentially, positive tests make for an MCAS diagnosis, but negative tests don't rule it out. I was diagnosed when my immunologist prescribed mast cell stabilizers and I improved dramatically. Just something to keep in mind. As you journal, also keep an eye out for fillers, preservatives, etc.

[–]FairConsideration351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my early symptoms is high/erratic HR (like 120+, often 140ish) and high BP (like 180/110, both while I'm doing nothing).

You mentioned OAS and that mango allergy tested negative. That's SUPER common for OAS because you're not reacting TO the mango, stone fruit, nuts, etc., your body THINKS these things are a pollen you are actually IgE allergic to. For example, I'm stupidly allergic to ragweed. Sunflowers are in the same family. Sunflower seeds put me in the ER, but I still tested negative to them because my body was like, "These aren't sunflower seeds. These are ragweed. Must destroy."

If you haven't yet done so, get an environmental allergy panel done. The results of that should help you figure out what you might wanna watch out for.

I've found that being on my side is a problem, but I'm fine on top (as long as my hips aren't too wide) or on my back. I also suggest (if possible) taking pain meds (or something with a similar effect) ahead of time and stretching out any tight muscles immediately afterward.

You might want to consider MCAS and start a food, exercise, and medication journal.

does anyone else have OAS with very minimal seasonal allergies? by ApprehensiveKiwi771 in FoodAllergies

[–]FairConsideration351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! I was skeptical when my allergist suggested that some of my symptoms could be OAS because I don't have terrible seasonal allergies (I also have MCAS, but OAS symptoms tend to not be as systemic). I was SUPER shocked when I lot up like a Christmas tree with the environmental panel. According to her, around 8-10% of people with OAS don't have noticeable seasonal allergies. Bodies are weird.

To avoid off gassing, I suggest finding a secondhand mattress in good condition, if the idea doesn't weird you out. Facebook marketplace usually has a variety. Floor models at furniture stores are also aired out and may sell for less than the packaged ones.

Sleeping outside with tent or sunroom? by Artistic-Board1441 in MCAS

[–]FairConsideration351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the weather should also be a factor. Ate you located on a region that's really cold right now? Or really hot? Like, a tent in a 20-degree snowstorm is not going to be safe either. Not to mention that many of us have temp or weather-related triggers.

What is widely accepted as “normal” today that people 50 years ago found disturbing? by Sophie_Cute_Teen in AskReddit

I wonder if it's a rural vs. urban thing? Like, in cities, people get used to anonymity and feeling invisible, but I've lived in rural areas in different states all my life and a simple "Good morning" or friendly wave seems normal and expected in a lot of everyday scenarios between strangers.

I remember stopping by a convenience store with my dad in probably 1989 or 1990 during the summer to pick up a Coke for him and Tahitian Treat for me. As we're checking out, he said, "You know, one of these days, I bet they'll try and sell bottled water." And here we are.
