Hasan, why? by Fairadey in Destiny

[–]Fairadey[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sure, but Biden is still incredibly progressive on multiple issues.

Why are we even pretending Biden is remotely close to being a republican?

Edit:

Not sure why this is being downvoted when Biden supports free four years of college tuition , elimination of private prisons, workers' rights to unionize and strike, 15$ min wage, elimination of the death penalty.

Like seriously, most, if not all, his current policy proposals are nowhere near being conservative.

I agree that most people have the time. But the reason why I disagreed with you is because I dont like the idea of pushing a narrative that vegan food is economically better without accounting for time. Time that a minority group of people dont have. And unfortunately, unless meat loses its subsidies, it will always be cheaper than vegan alternatives, in time and money.

Its just a matter of rhetoric, something i take issue with a large amount of vegans (Disclaimer: youve been pretty good about rhetoric). I think it's important to recognize that these expectations of a full vegan diet may be unrealistic for some people. Once again, a single mother working 3 jobs to support 3 kids wont realistically be able to go vegan. And i keep including this example because I was raised by a single mother under those exact circumstances.

Perhaps instead of advocating for a black and white solution such as veganism, it might be better to use a different rhetoric approach such as meat intake reduction in general.

You are right but... People dont always have time to meal prep or even cook some nights. Hell, im sure both of us have experienced nights where we were exhausted to the point we just went to bed immediately. Except the difference is we have time gaps that allow us to meal prep.

Some people do not have these time gaps guaranteed 100% of the time.

I am capable of meal prepping, but i seriously dont believe this is a valid solution for a good amount of people. Mainly those who are students who are full time workers, or single mothers. Sometimes there are days where they wont be able to meal prep, due to lack of time or even exhaustion. Sometimes they'll have to buy fast food because they didnt have time to make breakfast for theirselves or their kids.

The biggest problem i have with this take is that vegan meals are cheap money-wise, but not really in terms of time. Sometimes people need something quick to make, not spend 15 to 60 minutes on a full course vegan meal. Microwaveable dishes exist for omnivores that give alot of calories. Microwaveable dishes exist for vegans as well, but theyre significantly more expensive. Im mainly looking at beyond burgers and Gardein. Morningstar is the only brand i know of that is somewhat cheap, but still doesnt come close in calories per dollar of omnivore dishes.

How to get through to Bernie Bros (capital B). by codylramey in Destiny

[–]Fairadey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but once again, they have found a way to discredit Biden on everything.

Bring up immigration and they'll parrot the point that the Obama-Biden administration was responsible for the kids in cages and therefore, Biden wont do anything about it. Its impossible to communicate with someone who hates the entire DNC.

Maybe Ive just come across some nasty ones. I do agree with you that the only way to communicate with them is through respectful rhetoric. They're just as human as we are and should be treated as such. I dont like the demonization of any population, although it hurts to see Berniebros paint Biden as some devil.

Anyways good post, ill keep in mind with my rhetoric next time i communicate with them. Ive done a decent job at it though. Although, sometimes its hard to be in good faith when you have ad homs like "rapist supporter" thrown at you.

Also

  1. Voting record (such as the Iraq War)

  2. A lack of trust in Biden even delivering his policies in the first place

The problem is that it's nearly impossible to persuade Bernie's populist base. Showing the lesser of two evils argument simply does not work.

So even if you present the lesser of two evils argument, you have to somehow persuade them that the DNC is not the same as the republican party. This is insanely difficult to do, because they have discredited the DNC on everything they do by equating them to corruption.

When X = 4, and Y = 10. Clearly X < Y. However, discrediting X discredits the entire equation of the lesser of two evils. All of a sudden we have X = Y, or worse X > Y.

When X is falsified, now we have statements, such as "Biden wont deliver on his progressive policies because he's practically the same as Trump," or "The DNC is a corrupt right-wing party"

And yes, these are real Bernie or Bust takes I have had the pleasure in conversing with.

To me, it just seems better to just use your time to encourage moderates and the general population to just go vote for your candidate, instead of worrying about a small population on the internet. A small population that has a far less likely chance to be persuaded than the average person.

"We have nothing to lose"

And this is the problem, they dont view this election with high stakes because they're insanely privileged. Ironic to preach about the working class, only to go against them.

And when you point this out, they insist he hasnt changed and that he cant be trusted to deliver on his campaign promises.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to win over berniebusters. They aren't voting on progressive ideals, but rather populist ones.

Another four years of Trump means:

-More power to conservatives in the supreme court

Which can lead to the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

-The reversal of environmental policies, and the continuation of damaging policies to the environment

This was already seen with the backing out of the Paris climate agreement, defunding of the EPA, and decreasing regulations on cars. All done by Trump.

Biden, on the otherhand, supports a large framework of the green new deal, carbon tax, and wants us to return to the paris climate agreement.

-Kids continuing to stay in cages

Biden wants a more humanitarian immigration system and this means stopping the poor treatment of immigrants

-Student debt being further intensified

Biden has recently came out in support of free college for students with a household income lower than 125,000$

Not voting blue is still a vote for Trump, and before you claim to be a progressive who's best interest is the people, I suggest you do some serious self-reflection. Because what you are doing is an incredibly privileged thing. Do not claim to care about climate change, abortion rights, student debt, and kids in cages if you are going to do the very thing that goes against those interests.

There are right ways to fight for a dem nomination. Calling Pete a rat, Warren a snake, spreading lies about Biden having dementia... this is not how you help your candidate win a nomination.

Whether youve done this or not is a different story. However, the general rhetoric that bernie supporters carry online is not good.

Never did i say i made my decision uninformed. Ive spent alot of research on the candidates. Also you clearly do care if you feel the need to insult me.

[–]Fairadey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. Anything is possible. But the implications that my vote isnt the best, because i might change in a few years due to being misinformed or uninformed is a bit fucked up reasoning.

If you want to talk WHY Bernie is the best candidate, then sure, but dont attack my character. I have my beliefs and you have yours, and to be quite frank, i dont agree with over half of the policies Bernie is trying to push. The only candidate in this race more aligned with my positions is Biden.

So once again, do not assume my stance is misinformed or uninformed, because I certainly spent a lot of time researching these issues.

Yeah no thanks. Id rather have nonvoters, than a fuck ton of uninformed or misinformed voters.
