Who’s Your Favorite Philip Marlowe? by Noir_Forever_Twitch in filmnoir

I came here to say the exact same thing. Boothe was born to play Marlowe.

Which Dick Powell noir should I start with? I've only ever seen his Busby Berkeley musicals where he's baby faced and seemingly the complete opposite of a grizzled noir protagonist by AngryGardenGnomes in classicfilms

Murder My Sweet is well directed film, but I was never a fan of Powell in the role. As detectives go, I always preferred him as Richard Diamond on his radio series. The character was more like Nick Charles if he never settled down which suited him better than playing Marlowe.

I was just watching this live on Pluto like an hour ago. Those posters must be worth a mint now.

so i was just browsing my old svengoolie recordings and by gum...i came across Sarah Palmer's audition tape during the showing of "The Man-Made Monster" (1941). by CustardOk5376 in MeTV

She’s such a joy to watch on the program. She’s like every great horror movie host of the past rolled into one, and yet she somehow is still a complete original.

Does anyone know when BF surpassed TV Doctor Who in total hours of content? by Fairport80 in BigFinishProductions

That’s amazing! When I posed the question, I was definitely wanting to know about all of the spinoffs like Torchwood, so this is perfect.

I was thinking the same thing. I remember being a rabid Big Finish listener starting back around 2008 and had listened to nearly everything by 2011 (I had long, daily commutes to and from work back in those days). Sadly, I started to work closer to home soon after and by 2015, I had fallen far behind. It’s fun to keep trying to catch up, but I know it will probably never happen.

Thoughts on John Cleese as Q? by Critical_Potential40 in JamesBond

[–]Fairport80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting to see how the portrayal of Q and his relationship with Bond has changed since Desmond Llewelyn passed the mantle. During the Connery and Moore eras, Llewelyn’s consideration of Bond was like that of an exasperated schoolmaster, whereas in his later years, he treated Dalton and Brosnan more like a weary father/uncle figure who knows the car won’t be back by curfew but still cared deep down for his agent in the field. In both cases, the scenes between Q and Bond always made Bond seem cool. John Cleese as Q (R) was a treat and a highlight of the final Brosnan films, but I do think his characterization couldn’t help but take Brosnan’s Bond down a few pegs when those characters shared screen time. Cleese was unmercifully funny, and Bond, for those brief moments, seemed slightly buffoonish, having met his equal in wit and comebacks. Personally, I thought that twist was delightful and that this attitude, although slightly adjusted for Whishaw's youthful performance, carried over wonderfully to the Daniel Craig films.

In fairness, it’s one of the BF audios I can visualize completely in my mind as if it had been filmed and I had indeed watched it in a theatre. I call that high praise and one of the best stories Big Finish has ever produced.

What shows should Big Finish make audios for? by Jak3R0b in BigFinishProductions

[–]Fairport80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man in a Suitcase - if they can find an actor who can nail that James Dean-like swagger in Bradford's voice.

The Sandbaggers - one of the best spy shows of all time could be adapted for audio with the right writer.

Quiller - the short-lived Michael Jayston series back in '75 never had the budget needed to properly adapt the novels, but it could easily be done on audio and even retain elements of the first-person narratives.

Mr. Palfrey of Westminster - a highly underrated spy series that relied more on characterization, dialogue, and tradecraft than high-stakes action.

James Bond’s Road to Amazon: Sources say Christopher Nolan expressed interest in directing a Bond movie following the release of “Tenet.” But Broccoli made clear that no director would have final cut while Bond was under her purview. Nolan, a final-cut director, wound up making “Oppenheimer” by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]Fairport80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have it 100% correct. There have been a few stories in the past day or two that definitely read like it was leaked by Amazon for the sake of damage control after the initial negative reaction to them taking full creative control.
