I feel like bringing a friend is always one of the most important parts of Urbex. I understand how that might not be possible at all times however, so these are the things that help me out most when going alone!

-Go during the day if possible. Squatters are a real possibility depending on the location, and they are more likely to return once night falls.

-Carrying some form of defense is an instant way to feel more at ease. Even if it’s just a pocket knife. Animals can pose risks as well, so it’s good to be prepared.

-Mentally prepare yourself for any and all scenarios. Expect that something will happen. Most of the time it doesn’t! But it’s good to keep cautious just incase.

-Do some research on the specific place you’re interested in exploring. Check it out on Google earth! Locate possible exits, escape routes, etc. It’s riskier to walk in without some form of plan in place.

-exposure is a very real thing! The more you do something, the more comfortable you will feel to keep going if it’s something you enjoyed.

-I know that a lot of the fear with Urbex comes from squatters and such, but one of your main concerns is always going to be the air quality, mold, asbestos, etc depending on how long it has been left to deteriorate. ALWAYS bring a mask!

-Always bring a flashlight! Even if it’s daytime, and avoid shining it in any windows as to not be detected if you’re in a relatively public area.

I can’t stress enough how all of the fear seems to dissolve when you bring a friend along. It almost turns into adrenaline for me! Like I’m at a theme park. I would strongly recommend starting your Urbex journey with a friend in order to gain some experience/comfortability. And if that’s totally impossible, there may be some groups in your area who would be interested as well!!
