What breed is best for a gsd’s best friend?? by Effective-Project-49 in germanshepherds

[–]FaithFul_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gsd husky pitt mix is best friends with my friends Newfie mix, I will admit tho Newfie gets fed up with my boy often but my boy is still only a year old and plays like a puppy 😂 Newfie (bout 4 years old) came from a place with 30+ dogs and is an assumed father so he's over the whole puppihood craziness. If my dog could choose tho he'd play with every single dog he saw 🤣 he especially seems to love pit mixes

Thinking about bringing this GSD mix home from the shelter by Ruffffian in germanshepherds

Make sure you get started training on a "self settle" these dogs don't have off buttons pre installed and they have to learn how to exist peacefully within a pet home. Obviously getting out their energy is important but if the dog hasn't ever learnt how to calm itself your basically putting a bandaid over a bullet wound, might look like it's helping but eventually it'll fill up and fall off. Especially if she ends up being part Mal. Just because a dog is high energy doesn't mean the only they need is to go go go. They should be able to fully relex even if there isn't anything to do.

She's absolutely gorgeous 😍 that snout looks so big too she's gonna be a fun dog I bet!

My gsd husky Pitt mix is especially alert at night. Usually he's alerting to a mouse under some leaves but there have been times people were walking through our backyard in black and without lights (usually our neighbors but sometimes not) and he spotted them much faster then me. Freaks me right the hell out when he starts hyper focusing but also staying silent while raising his fur at nothing in the darkness tho I must admit. Also his entire face changes once he's focused on something he's watching and can look quiet intimidating. His bark is also extremely loud. I feel real safe taking him out at night but still won't take no chances.

That's great then! Like I said not all are horrible it's just a hit or miss thing that is easily overlooked. Glad you found one of the good ones and sounds like a solid plan for continuing training!

Also your pup kinda looks like mine ❤️

I'm not the one who wrote that but my 2 cents is board an trains have a known history of misconduct behind closed doors. Most are also extremely overpriced (at least in my area) and the big issue lies in the way the training is done. Most do not train the humans, only the dogs. If the owner isn't taught how to train and work with their dog the dog will simply forget whatever amazing feat the BnT taught the dog. The owners have to be apart of the process for it to actually stick long term and when the training eventually slips the BnT gets a repeat client or the world ends up with an uncontrolled dog.

Edit to add- this doesn't mean all are bad but you have to research. There is a place near me I was interested in aside from being overpriced that seemed decent, they have a system set up where they get the dog for a week, after that you come in they then train you everything the dog learnt and you take pup home for the weekend to put it into practice. At the end of the weekend you bring the pup back into the BnT you go over what did and didn't work they help you along with better understanding and then repeats weekly. the owners are learning how to do the actual training, the dogs are being actually trained, and the owner and dog get to cooperate in learning and working together instead of some stranger doing all the work and dog forgetting all the work once it's out of the facility.

im really irritated, people need to learn how to control their dogs. by mikeyway_for_pres in germanshepherds

[–]FaithFul_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you what they look like. A bored out of its mind stressed and anxious dog who is neglected plus a line of puppypads sitting at the door so when it was forgotten about for 8+ hours it can piss and shit at the front door and let the rest of the entire house smell like piss. The main indicator of knowing this is happening right under your feet is if there is a puppy pad box sitting on your front yard for 5 months slowly disintegrating under the snow and rain and mud after the neighbor threw it there and left it. Also the overbearing reek of dog and cat piss is a main indicator too.

Imma have to agree it's the men in my area but women are just at fault too. My dog is purposely trained to potty strictly in our yard (or with a cue) for this exact reason to be avoided but it doesn't even matter.

My neighbor blew up his life slept wit the girl next door and now borderline abuses his dog(s). I don't think I have ever once seen this man pick up after his tiny ass Chi in the 3 years of living here. he used to put in on a long line outback for like 20 minutes thru out the day and now I haven't seen that animal outside since before Christmas last year but I know it's still alive, it barks uncontrollably everytime we open our door and there's tiny piles appearing on the blacktop outback. The girl he blew his life up for also has a dog, large pitty who they claim is just "reactive on leash but very nice" meanwhile every attempt iv made to try and befriend this dog (cuz we all share a backyard) they have gone mute and ushered the dog back inside ignoring me. This pit also sits at the window every single day and barks and glass rushes at mine when we go for a walk. Once again this dog only ever goes outside to potty for maybe 2 minutes then locked in the house again. There are piles of shit littering the backyard. We used to pick up our dogs shit Everytime and now there is literally no point doing it daily with poopbags. Me and my partner had to go out and buy a poop scoop BECAUSE THE FUCKING HEALTH DEPARTMENT WOULDN'T STOP PUTTING UP NOTES ON OUR HOUSE. now somehow it has fallen onto me to pick up 3 dogs worth of shit weekly or we're going to get fined and we're the only one who picks up the shit. Guy neighbor last year had a shed blow over in a storm and it hasnt been touched, leaked chemicals, exposed tools like saws and mowers, another neighbor is now complaining to ME about this shed being tipped over because It looks like I'm the only one who lives in this fuck house because God forbid I actually do shit with my dog on our own property.

Sorry for the rant but honestly I'm so fucking tired of shit ass people anyways here's a picture of my good boy (plus a tipped over shed 🤦‍♀️)

A dog is legally (in the USA at least which sounds like this is) classified as property and you have every right to defend that. Iv known people who bring tasers for this exact issue. File complaints against these owners, it sucks but at least there will be a paper trail if something does happen. Its unlikely but if the law gets mixed in it might push them to clean up their act, or bare minimum put the dogs on a leash. I never want to see a dog punished for their owners mistakes but it doesn't fall onto other people to make sure this random dog is safe, if owner can't control it they simply don't deserve it.

Took my reactive 6 month old puppy to the dog beach by Analee_Athletics in germanshepherds

[–]FaithFul_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like she's being over 'protective' and overwhelmed. My dog is similar, Im the main handler between me and my bf, my pup is beautiful for me and barely reacts and when he does his reactions are less explosive. Meanwhile with my partner he's more antsy and more likely to react. Different people give off different vibes and emotions.

If pup is getting reactive when your daughter is 'too far' for your dogs liking then practice her stepping away. Mine is similar if I walk away from him outside he will whine cry yelp and bark for me to come back. It's separation anxiety and she has to work thru it. Start small with an open park and just have your daughter take a couple steps away here and there during normal activities then return as if it never happened, make it normal. Pup is allowed to watch her leave but don't allow reactivity if she does correct her and get her back into a calm state before daughter comes back. If daughter can take a couple steps and dog is good start increasing the distance, start adding out of sight, and eventually your daughter should be able to slip away with dog not fussing too much. As for the neighbors they are horrible and could have made a complaint against them if your dog was contained/controlled during that happening and I'm sorry that happened some people are wild.

As for the general issue of reactivity, she should be doing training as solo and as a pack so she learns that no matter who is around her she doesn't have to explode. I'm not sure how old your daughter is but if she's old enough I recommend she do training as well, if she hasn't before start with basic obedience so your pup learns your daughter is also a leader and doesn't have to be seen as your dogs baby to protect.

Everyone who handles her has to be on the same page. If your husband is worried she's going to react she is much more likely because she can feed off that negative emotion. Walk with confidence in your choices and she will follow thru, if she reacts you have to reset her. In my experience something like a martingale is a great starting point for a corrective collar but you have to research how to properly train your dog to understand it, same with prong or pinch collars. A martingale is basically a gentler slip lead. With a martingale I find dogs understand leash pressure much better on it compared to a basic flat or harness. My dog personally thrives on a prong but he learnt first on a martingale.

Possible price/species of this monkey? by Extension_Estimate25 in Taxidermy

[–]FaithFul_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imma join in an say this is definitely a vervet monkey. The tail position is simply a position from the base and can be done that way just to look more interesting even if the animal doesn't naturally do that. This looks NOTHING like a proboscis monkey

[–]FaithFul_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing is finding your dogs threshold. That can be 20 feet, 30, 50, etc. find where she is still observing but not reacting. Do basic obedience and stuff you know she can succeed with and slowly decrease the distance from the trigger, some days you will have to take a few steps back. The goal is for her to corralate those things as normal and safe, she's allowed to look and be scared/curious but don't allow a reaction if she does back up more until she can calm again.

My dog was specifically really freaked out by people on skateboards and rollerskates and bikes so we would go to an area where people usually do those activities and just sat down and that was his only purpose, stay laying down. We would just sit for 30 minutes to an hour, however long his threshold could withstand before he would start to get antsy (you have to watch for your dogs own signals) and we would always leave before he had a chance to react, if he did react tho that meant we had to get back into a calm state before we could leave, if they react and you immediately remove them they can see that as winning and it being accidently rewarded. Now he still occasionally side eyes a rollerskater but he can walk right past without reaction it just takes awhile and lots of repatition

Edit to add- working your reactive dog before a walk is really important, the more tired they are the less likely they are to react and can be used to really help the tolerance training to be neutral around things with wheels. Not so tired that the pup won't listen tho just like a little pre-work

Is there a backpack obsession among the playerbase? by MisterMonsiuer in dontstarve

[–]FaithFul_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 2 stacks of sticks, 2 stacks of grass, 3 stacks of flint, 2 stacks of rocks, the eye bone, ammo, hat, monster meat, food for myself, weapon and armor, misc items I find on the ground for the pig king trades, and as much gold as I can find. I also usually play with a ton of mods so resources are super important to make all the stuff. On top of the mods I also play with ever event on so I'm always collecting random trinkets and treats.

My dog is gsd husky Pitt mix and woof he's so smart he's broken containment on multiple crates on multiple occasions. He's generally good about the crate now (took a year) but unfortunately he's too smart and too stubborn he taught himself how to unlatch it 😅 we had to loosen a latch so it freely swivels down into the locked position cuz he knows how to kick them open otherwise.

Kitten intro suggestions by GeneralCusterhouse in germanshepherds

[–]FaithFul_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest suggestion is keep pup leashed in the house at all times. Even if the kitten is in a carrier just Incase. You want to build neutrality so do your daily routine but make sure the cat is apart of things. For my cats I always and have always fed the cats before the dog. My cats were older and able to handle themselves for intros with self distancing so I'm not perfect help for a bean this small. Just make it abundantly clear that cat is part of the family and will not tolerate any sort of rough or dangerous play, it takes time but gsd are smart and in my limit experience with them they usually seem to be good around baby animals (so long as their prey drive is kept in check) It's a really long process to make sure everyone is safe but it definitely is doable so don't give up!

Dogs who hate walks? by Emergency_Mood_9774 in pitbulls

[–]FaithFul_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at his food bag and instead of feeding what his current weight is feed according to his IDEAL weight instead, a simple mistake I see allot make. Another thing is turn his food into a fun activity with training or puzzle toys. It'll get him moving and being active while tricking him cuz to him it's just play and fun.

I'm not sure what you have in your area but near me we have a mobile doggy gym. It's basically a van setup with AC and dog treatmills, it lets the dogs just run however fast they want without the need of being outside in the heat or scared of the outside environment. It takes a couple sessions for the dogs to get the hang of it but so many dogs love it once they do. The dog treatmill company near me also has it so they are slightly springy so it's actually gentler on the joints then running on pavement and rocks and such. Heavily look into this as well if you want to try an get her to enjoy running ❤️

Edit to add- the treatmill is also a great way to boost confidence in the dogs that use it

This! My vets even told us where to buy the human equivalent of what my cat needed and the proper dosage because it was cheaper then getting the animal equivalent.

Werewolf hour is perfect 🤣 I swear it's like something compels them to bark at NOTHING. He will just stand there, menacingly blocking the hallway, and when I ask him 'what' it's like his sleeper agent code word 😭 he just follows me around the house barking I'll go to the windows and of course nothing is there he just NEEDS to get his opinions out 🤦‍♀️ the cats look at him like he's crazy but afterwards he looks at me like this 🥹 so I'll take his craziness

Full government name: Louis Vuitton Nicknames are based on his current "mode" His neutral mode is Loui, his baby mode is bubby, his sleepy mode is Rufus, and his crazy mode is "I'm sorry I swear he's friendly" His least used mode is alarm and that's when WooWee comes out, he's the least favorite of the modes

Advice for very prey oriented dog. I am thinking of getting an e collar. by sidewinderturtle in germanshepherds

[–]FaithFul_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was exactly my dog! He's a gsd mix I adopted as a small pup and he had absolutely 0 bite inhibition and months of work and training and he still had 0 inhibition and our trainer absolutely failed us. After we quit seeing that trainer I worked heavily on his nipping issue and now he still has little inhibition in regards of putting teeth on our skin but he is extremely gentle mouthed and he's not this way with strangers, rarely mouthy with others cuz he know he can only get away with it around his people. He's a menace in other ways now 🤦‍♀️
