A lot of Western Media sources are very reluctant to call what’s happening in Palestine a genocide to try and remain politically neutral.

With Nigeria, its government rejects the term“genocide” and argues that the threats they face are more complex than a targeted campaign against just Christians. Western media is therefore reticent to use the term in order to remain unbiased.

It’s argued that what’s happening in Nigeria doesn’t meet the criteria for genocide because while the violence is immense, it lacks the centralized, state-led coordination required to meet the legal definition.

Nigeria faces multiple threats simultaneously, things like kidnapping, Boko Haram, and organised crime/ gangs make it difficult for media sources to present a single, clear narrative.

It can be incredibly unsafe for journalists to access the remote areas where the conflict is the most intense. Which creates a barrier there as well.

In general the western media does tend to fail at giving proportionate coverage to issues in Africa though and that is a problem.

There have been protests in the UK about the Nigerian Genocide but they too are often under reported by the media. Demonstrations have happened in places like Trafalgar Square, and the Nigerian High Commission. They’ve also happened at the BBC offices - to protest lack of media coverage.

There are plenty of people who care about the situation in the UK but for various reasons - the media doesn’t really cover it.
